Shackleford Banks Kayak Camping - Cape Lookout National Seashore
My wife and I spent the weekend kayak camping at the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
We drove down Saturday morning and launched at the Harker's Island Visitor Center. From there, it was a 4.9 mile paddle across to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. We fired up the JetBoil and had lunch before making the rough crossing to Shackleford Banks.
We set up camp and soon had three of the ~120 feral horses on the island come visit. We weren't sure they'd let us in our tents when the sun went down, but fortunately, they slowly moved on.
We made the paddle back to Harker's Island early Sunday morning. It was a great quick trip!

Peter Bell travels to the South Core Banks of Cape Lookout National Seashore to explore one of North Carolina's pristine coastlines. (Carteret Co.)
Winter at Cape Lookout
It sure didn't feel like winter. There we were again, standing on Shell Point looking out across the Back Sound towards Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout lighthouse on South Core Banks. It was sunny and already in the mid 50's at 10:30 in the morning. It was a perfect window of beauty between rain earlier in the week and the promise of a nasty nor' easter barreling our way and due to arrive sometime overnight.
The six of us slid our kayaks into the water and began the four mile crossing of the Back Sound. Mid way to Bird Island the wind began to gust and the resulting chop added a little excitement for the two virgin coastal paddlers in our group. As we cut across the bar between Cedar Hammock Island and Morgan Island the waters calmed and we picked up speed as we caught the ebb tide that drew us into Blinds Hammock Bay. We gently glided through the bay and out to the edge of Barden Inlet.
As we headed along the tip of Shackleford Banks we were approached by some of the wild horses that watched us almost as curiously as we watched them. Barden Inlet was exceptionally calm and the crossing over to South Core Banks was one of the easiest we have ever made during a tide change. We landed on the banks at the base of Cape Lookout Lighthouse. During the summer this thin strip of beach is often so crowded you have to dodge boats and people to find an open place to pull your kayaks up but on this day we were almost alone.
We ate our lunch as we basked in the sun on the empty beach. By now the temperatures were in the mid 60's and we had to shed some layers to keep from overheating. It felt more like spring than winter. We took a walk across the dunes to the ocean side and walked along the beach. Just a year ago Ladybug and I were just a little ways north on the worse ferry ride ever headed to Ocracoke Island to pick up her kayak. It was just hard to believe it was February.
We returned to our kayaks and prepared to cross back over the inlet that was now slick as glass. We paddled on a side trip into the marsh before headed back to Harkers Island. It was one of the best days on the Banks that we have ever had. As the sun set across the sound we loaded up our gear and bid the banks farewell. Over and over again and again we find ourselves drawn to this magical place.

Places to Go-Cape Lookout National Seashore, Outer Banks, North Carolina
A boat ride out to Cape Lookout National Seashore. See the wild horses and also the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. There is really good seashell picking out there too.
Panaramic Tour from Atop Cape Lookout Lighthouse
An awe inspiring panoramic view from atop the 163 foot tall Cape Lookout Lighthouse, built on this treacherous cape in 1859. You are in the midst of the Graveyard of the Atlantic overlooking the sea and reminded of historic events that helped shape the region.
Before the Lighthouse and its keepers, before the whalers, there were the Galleons that sailed from the West Indies and Spanish Florida along this coast and its shoaling waters. The wild Spanish horses from those ships once roamed these storm ravaged islands and now call Shackleford Banks home.
See where they roam freely and wild. Feel their independence and pioneering spirit. Imagine their earliest days coming ashore for the first time to lay claim to these raw islands. Enjoy the thrill.
See this URL for great views and a tour of the Lighthouse exterior with historic details.

North Carolina's Wild Horses of Cape Lookout
A video of some of the wild horses, that live in the Cape Lookout National Seashore, on Shackleford Island. These horses truly make the barrier island a special place to visit. Each horse has been given an ID#, as seen in the video, are the stallion 24J and mare 8H. They all have free range and go wherever that suits them on the island, from the beach, to the woods, dunes and marshes, even into the Atlantic Ocean and back bays! These horses are managed by the U.S. National Park Service (not the BLM).
Cape Lookout Lighthouse Animated in Trainz
I also have animation tutorials for flashing and rotating beacons of lighthouses.
For flashing animations:
For rotating animations:
This is a replica of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse located in South Core Banks on Cape Lookout Lighthouse Road on Harkers Island, North Carolina. This lighthouse is on 24-7 and flashes every 15 seconds. This DCB-224 Aerobeacon with dual reflectors makes a full rotation every 30 seconds. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse has an elevated doorway with a stairway leading up to it. This is because a hurricane destroyed the attached building. This building led to the lighthouse with the entrance being on the second or third floor. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is the southernmost lighthouse on the Outer Banks. All lighthouses south of this point are on the mainland.

A Day Trip To Cape Lookout, North Carolina
We love the coast of North Carolina which boasts several historical lighthouses. Recently we had a chance to anchor near Cape Lookout where the water was warm, but the sky was a little bit overcast as a storm was blowing in from the Atlantic.
