EP9 | Cape Point Sailing Shakedown Cruise from False Bay to Cape Town
Our yacht refit is almost completed. We test out all our upgrades on our sailboat and do a shakedown cruise from False Bay Yacht Club to the Waterfront in Cape Town. Cape Point deserves all the respect in the world, but if you plan it right and have a ton of luck on your side, it can be uneventful and a really beautiful sail. We enjoyed a few days in the calm water of the very protected V&A yacht club marina and have lots of catch ups with friends as we prepare to say goodbye to the city and leave on our adventure. We test our 36-foot yacht in preparation for some blue water sailing.
We are planning to live and explore the Indian Ocean from our sailboat. We did a refit of a TOSCA 36 and left Cape Town in October 2018. A large part of sailing is learning how to be adaptable and change plans - our biggest being our failed engine as we were making our way from Knysna to Port Elizabeth. Follow along as we figure out how to live with less.

Cape Town Afternoon Drive
Took a rouge afternoon drive during my stay in Cape Town, Thursday, December 12, 2013. It was awesome driving my Nana's big old 1990's Mercedes Benz on the windy, salt sprayed, mountain roads. Taking little videos all the way, I started my drive around 12pm. Went up Signal Hill, then between Table Mountain & Lion's Head along the ocean road beside the Twelve Apostles. I drove over past Llandudno down to Hout Bay where I had a delicious Cape Malay Seafood Curry at the Mariner's Warf. I continued across Chapman's Peak drive, right around past Noordhoek Beach, through Simon's Town to Boulder's Beach to say, Hi to the penguins and jump off some rocks into the warmer False Bay water (landed on an urchin - ouch). Took a leisurely drive home past Fish Hoek & Kalk Bay back to Durbanville via Boyes Drive, with a last beautiful view of False Bay and Muizenberg Beach... and all that between 12pm & dinner - not bad at all. It's no wonder I consider Cape Town the most beautiful place on earth! :-) Justin
GoPro Scuba - Diving at Pyramid Rock, Cape Town
2012/07/29 - With winter being the rainy season in Cape Town, perfect dive days are few and far in between. This was one of them! We did two dives this day, of which the boat dive at Pyramid Rocks was the first. It was a 35 minute dive in total, but I tried to trim it as short as possible for the upload. Shot 100% on my GoPro HD Hero in a Dive Housing.

Long-finned Pilot Whales (Globicephala melas) off Cape Point, South Africa
We were privileged enough to encounter these rare beauties on our fishing excursion south of Cape Point, Cape Town, South Africa #PointRunnerCharters - Yes we initially thought they were killer whales with their white markings so excuse the predator comment :)
Shark Diving in Cape Town South Africa
30mins boat ride from Simon's Town, Cape Town in South Africa there is an island called Seal Island. Every year around July the Great White Shark comes to feed on the 1000's of seals which habit the island for mating. One of the best experiences I have ever done.
Watch right to the end for a great slow-mo.
Thanks to the captain, Ali and all the crew for an awesome day.

Sailing into Cape Town, South Africa
Called South Africa's mother city because it was the first locality to be settled by the Dutch in the last half of the seventeenth century, Cape Town today is simply amazing!
Protected by 1,086-meter-high Table Mountain, Cape Town's city center and its nearest residential suburbs lie in the City Bowl. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, redeveloped in the late 1980s, includes luxury hotels and a lively mall with expensive shops and restaurants which are frequented by both tourists and local residents alike. Nearby is the Two Oceans Aquarium featuring creatures unique to this area near the confluence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Catamarans depart from the V & A Waterfront to Robben Island where one can view the very cell in which Nelson Mandela was long incarcerated. The tours, led by former prisoners, often prove to be a very emotional experience. As a bonus, fairy penguins are sometimes glimpsed resting comfortably on Robben Island under the bushes near the catamaran dock.
Table Mountain itself is easily accessible by revolving cableway. However, queues for the cableway can be long. Also, operation of the cableway is stopped whenever there are high winds. Interestingly, tourists in a sometimes windless City Bowl may not be aware that strong winds atop Table Mountain have forced the cableway to close. Therefore one should ring the cableway to check if it is operating before hopping a bus or taxi to the lower cableway station.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, southeast of Table Mountain, contains some 4,500 floral species. This is a lovely venue for a picnic or, for the more adventurous, a hike on the slopes of Table Mountain.
A day trip to Cape Point in the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve should begin with a stop at Boulder's Beach, just south of Simon's Town, the naval port facing east onto False Bay. The penguin colony there is one of only a very few mainland colonies in the world.
Continuing south and entering the nature reserve, one finds other vehicles slowing and stopping to watch the Cape baboons which boldly clamber onto the cars, begging for food. At Cape Point, the southwesternmost point in Africa, the scenery is remarkably rugged; and the winds can be fierce. A 15-minute hike takes tourists up to the lighthouse. Or, for those who may not be in a hiking mood, a very short funicular railway is also available. For a nominal fee, tourists may pose for a digital photo which is then e-mailed by the photographer as an attachment to a friend back home.
The other must do day trip from Cape Town is to the Winelands. Wine has been grown in this region for over three centuries. Winelands tours generally include visits to wineries in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and/or Paarl. But even those who don't drink wine will still enjoy a delightful day, feasting their eyes on some of the beautifully-restored old mansions which are treasures of Cape Dutch architecture. The Winelands offer gorgeous, green grassy landscapes and panoramas with mountains behind. In addition, there are interesting museums nearby.
Hermanus, the self-proclaimed whale capital of the world some 80 km from Cape Town, celebrates the return of the southern right whales each autumn with the Hermanus Whale Festival which is staged in late September and early October. About 1,000 of these large mammals are thought to swim in the waters off the coast of South Africa.
Cape Town is also the jumping-off point for the Garden Route, a scenic coastal drive stretching east from Mossel Bay some 250 km, as far as Storms River in the Tsitsikamina National Park. One can rent a car in Cape Town and drive to the Garden Route via Outshoorn where ostriches are farmed. The rental car can then be returned in George or Port Elizabeth. From either of these cities it is possible to fly back to Cairo via Johannesburg.
PRACTICALITIES:
The best time to visit Cape Town is from October to March -- that is, before, during, or after the Southern Hemisphere summer. During this time of year it is dry and the days are longer. Only 0.6 mm of rain falls per month in January and February, the driest months. During December, the warmest month, the average daily low is 20 C. (68 F.) and the average daily high climbs to 27 C. (80 F.).
However, those considering a visit in December or January would do well to reserve far in advance. Bookings during this school holiday period are normally heavy due to the fact that most tourists in South Africa are in fact locals!
Those who must plan their visit between June and August, the Northern Hemisphere summer, should not fret as Cape Town is worthy of a visit in any season. The mother city's rainiest month is June, with only 93 mm; and the coldest month is July, when the average daily low is a moderate 7 C. (44 F.) and the average daily high reaches 17 C. (62 F.).

Well, the blog is a week behind. Ive been very busy entertaining our distributors, going to formal business dinners, delivering presentations, and doing my regular day-job as well. My days have been starting around 7:00 a.m. and ending around midnight. Sure, we managed to have some fun (as the video will attest), but we also worked really hard. Work hard, play hardthats our way!
My first impression of Cape Town is that its windy. We may have the Windy City of Chicago, but it cant hold a match to the winds here. This became evident when we decided to charter a catamaran out of the harbor for a few hours sail. On board was my friend and coworker Sue Dommeyer, her husband Jay, Todd Radtke, the captain, first mate, and me. As we were leaving the harbor for the open ocean, we clocked 60 knots of wind on the wind indicator.
60 knots converts to 69 miles per hour. Hurricane winds begin at 74 miles an hourso we were experiencing what hard-core sailors would call a stiff breeze. For a moment, our captain had a look of sheer and utter terror on his face as we all grabbed on to handrails to hold on for dear life as our catamaran bobbed about like a cork. I had always heard the cats were supposed to be very stable in rough weather, but I quickly learned otherwise.
Once we entered the open ocean, the wind and seas died down. The captain relaxed and even told us that wed set a new speed record22 knots! It was smooth sailing from here on out. We encountered whales (we never actually saw them, but we could see their tale-tell signs of breathing through their blow-holes), big cargo ships, and a shark. All in all, it was a very pleasant day to be on the water.
One of the most striking features of Cape Town, whether viewed from the land or the water, is Table Mountain. The mountain gets its name from its very flat top and steep sides. It rises approximately 3,500 feet above sea level.
One of the coolest aspects of the mountain is the clouds that form on the top. On an otherwise perfectly cloudless day, the Table Mountain will often be covered by a table cloth of white clouds that form and dissipate as if by magic. Oh, sure, theres probably some fancy scientific explanation for the phenomenon, but the local legend is much more fun. Apparently, the clouds are actually the visible results of a smoking contest between the Devil and a local pirate named Van Hunks. How cool is that?
Over the next couple of days, I will try to get more South Africa video edited for the blog. In the meantime, enjoy a virtual sail around the Cape Town Harbor
