Sofitel Wellington Grand Opening 2016
New Zealand Prime Minister, The Right Honourable John Key officially opened the new Sofitel Wellington hotel on 17 August 2016 – the first luxury hotel to open in the capital in over 15 years.
Mr Key joined local owners and developers C.P. Group, Chief Operating Officer AccorHotels Pacific, Simon McGrath, AccorHotels Senior Vice President New Zealand, Fiji and French Polynesia, Chris Sedgwick and over 70 invited guests from the travel and tourism industry to mark the occasion.
In a toast to Sofitel’s French heritage, the hotel was officially opened by a ceremonial ‘Sabrage’ ritual whereby a bottle of Champagne was opened with a single, elegant swipe of a sabre – a tradition made famous by Napoleon in the French Revolution.
Chief Operating Officer AccorHotels Pacific, Simon McGrath, said: “Sofitel Wellington is a strategic addition to our New Zealand hotel network and will play a key role in further elevating Wellington’s international profile and attractiveness as a key leisure and business destination.
“We are confident that Sofitel’s strong branding in the luxury market will appeal and cater to a range of domestic and international travellers seeking personalised and high-end hospitality in the capital. It’s been over a decade since a hotel of this quality and status has opened in Wellington and we are delighted that the Prime Minister could lend his time to officially launch the hotel.”
The $51 million dollar luxury Sofitel Wellington hotel is set to become the capital’s must-stay destination for business and leisure nestled between Wellington’s iconic landmarks ‘The Beehive’ and the Botanical Gardens.
Sofitel Wellington boasts 129 beautifully appointed rooms and suites in botanical inspired décor featuring vintage gold and bronze tones with indulgent rain showers, complimentary wifi internet for multiple devices and Smart TVs with Bluetooth. The hotel also houses The Green Room lounge and bar, Jardin Grill restaurant, alfresco courtyard with fire pit, a So Fit gymnasium and state of the art technology across three meeting and event venues.
Sofitel Wellington is the third luxury Sofitel hotel in New Zealand, joining its award-winning sister hotels Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour and Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa.
Prince George's Royal Tour scrapbook
He may still be in nappies but Prince George managed to upstage his famous parents during his first official royal tour of Australia and New Zealand
Nine-month-old Prince George, third-in-line to the throne, stole the show every time he made an appearance with his parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on a three-week tour of the two former British colonies.
His first official event was at a parent and baby group on April 9 at Government House in Wellington, the New Zealand capital, the residence where his father, Prince William, crawled for the first time during a royal tour in 1983.
While the Duke and Duchess received a warm welcome everywhere they went, it was often Prince George who captured the public's attention. The young prince was showered with gifts, including a personalised skateboard and a wombat. Even a square in Adelaide was named after him.

The Thermal Village - Rotorua, New Zealand
Geyser at Whakarewarewa in Rotorua New Zealand
Since the early 19th century, tourists have flocked to Rotorua's natural hot springs, bubbling mud pools, active geysers - spectacular thermal wonders on the 'Pacific rim of fire'.
Māori culture and history infuses Rotorua life. The town of Rotorua, on the shores of Lake Rotorua, is home to the Te Arawa iwi - one of New Zealand's larger Māori tribes.
Rotorua's other-world volcanic landscape also provides a dynamic backdrop to many adventure activities - mountain biking, trout fishing, bathing in natural hot pools, white water rafting, and air adventures.
Māori Culture
Rotorua offers a rich Māori experience based on many local legends and long cultural history.
At Whakarewarewa, a living Māori village in an active geothermal setting, residents still use natural resources for cooking, washing and bathing. Guided tours include bubbling mud pools, mineral springs where families bathe, and local cuisine cooked in thermal waters and traditional hangi ovens.
Te Puia, an important Māori culture centre, has visitor experiences covering traditional artforms, carving and weaving, Māori story-telling, and authentic cultural performances.
Personalised tours with local Māori guides offer in-depth Māori culture experiences taking visitors off-the-beaten track into the region and the local culture.

A Solution to Homelessness - Housing First Approach
There is currently an effective approach to reduce homelessness that is being increasingly used around the world. It's called the Housing First approach, and in Hamilton it's being used in a multi-agency collaboration project named The People's Project.
