Caratacus Stone
The Caratacus Stone is an inscribed stone on Winsford Hill. It is in Exmoor National Park in Somerset. The stone dates from around the 6th century and inscribed on it, in Latin, is CARAACI NEPVS which translates to 'Grandson/immediate Descendent of Caratacus' however it is thought that there may have been more inscription on the stone. It is unsure what the stones purpose is but it is probably a memorial to a person who was or claimed to be a descendent of the British Chieftain 'Caratacus'. The stone now stands in an enclosure to stop it being damaged even more by the wild Exmoor winds and rain. This area (and the enclosure) is very popular with sheep and sheep can often be found sheltering in the enclosure around the stone.
