Dominic Christmas Elf
Dominic Garvey guided and inspired hundreds of stage and screen performers and who knows how many choirs and soloists. He was the heart and soul of The Carousel Music Theatre in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, for many years. He got a standing ovation just last year for his Chopin selection at the dedication of a Boothbay Harbor church Steinway. But for Christmas 2009 he sat at a piano he didn't like to play accompanying a family who couldn't sing. Twice he just played from memory...a skill he said he didn't have. He left us in 2015. He is missed.

Griff Braley - Chats with Champions - Nov 15, 2016
Griff Braley, artistic director of Heartwood Regional Theater and drama teacher at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, Maine was the speaker at Chats with Champions on November 15.
In this engaging Chat, he focused on the role of Heartwood in the local theater scene and the process of helping young people to develop dramatic skills.
Griff Braley has spent his entire life in Maine, most of it involved in theater. After graduating with a BA in Theater from Bates College, he directed his first play at Wiscasset High School in 1983. He continued to teach children’s theater, mythology, speech, acting, technical theater, film and English until 2006. With more than sixty plays-including numerous original scripts and several award-winning one act plays- under his belt at Wiscasset, Griff was invited to create a full theater and film program at Lincoln Academy.
In a unique collaboration with Lincoln Academy, he teaches acting and film curriculum during the day, has lead Lincoln’s students to seven consecutive State One-Act Festivals, and leverages Heartwood resources to provide comprehensive performing opportunities for students.
Griff started to work with adults with his original production of Zeno’s Arrow at Lincoln County Community Theater in 1998. He then directed Fiddler on the Roof, Camelot, peter Pan, The Little Prince, Face on the Barroom Floor and The Secret Garden for the Chocolate Church in Bath.
Since envisioning and founding Heartwood Regional Theater Company in the fall of 2003, Griff has acted as Artistic Director, producing more than 90 productions, including Molly Sweeney, Les Miserables, Susannah, Antigone, Blood Wedding, Man of La Mancha, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Gilgamesh, Thoroughly Modern Miller, The Crucible, Romeo and Juliet, The Glass Menagerie, An Enemy of the People, A Little Night Music, Little Women, Beauty and the Beast, Metamorphoses, Sunday in the Park with George, Pinocchio, Beowulf, As It is In Heaven, See How they Run, The House of Bernarda Alba, Godspell, Four Quartets, Ghostwriter, Macbeth, The Legend of Jim Cullen, The Fiddler on the Roof, Jekyll and Hyde, The Musical, Cyrano de Bergerac, One Man Two Guvnors, Our Town, and The Tempest.
The Heartwood Regional Theater Company mission statement, in part, states: “Heartwood promotes the theater art experience in the lives of children and adults in the community. Performers and audiences alike share an artistic experience that challenges the human spirit and inspires personal growth and enlightenment. The Heartwood experience focuses on the beauty of artistic expression, the necessity of social discourse, a passion for artistic growth and excellence, and examination of the human spirit and an assumption of our vital human purpose.”
Chats with Champions is a free community offering from your national award winning Skidompha Library and is sponsored by Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop.
