F-VLOG #8: ONE DAY TRIP TO CHIAYI
On the last spring break, I visited Chiayi and explored the city to its fullest extent. Six places were toured under the time limit of fourteen hours. Here is the list:
1. Southern Branch National Palace Museum (國立故宮博物院南部院區)
2. Budai Fish Market (布袋漁港觀光魚市)
3. Blue High Heels Church (高跟鞋教堂)
4. Minxiong Haunted House (民雄鬼屋)
5. National Chung Cheng University (國立中正大學)
6. Carrefour Night Market (嘉樂福觀光夜市)
Initially I intended to visit a few sites only (#1, #3, #4), but my travel buddy managed to tighten up the time and added three extra places on the list. When you happen to visit Taiwan or just want to have a swift escape from the overwhelming life, I would highly recommend Chiayi as an alternative to travel. It is simply one of the most underrated cities of the island.

I hope this Taiwan Alishan travel guide video and notes below helps you. If you have a question please leave a comment below.
- 8:30 AM ARRIVE CHIAYI STATION
That’s the TRA station - not the high speed rail. If arriving by high speed rail allow up to 30 minutes to catch a taxi to the TRA station.
For a guide to trains and buying train tickets in Taiwan see this video:
- 9:00 AM TRAIN FROM CHIAYI STATION TO FENQIHU STATION (runs at 9:00 on weekdays, 9:30 and 10:00 on weekends, trip time 2.5 hours)
You can’t go all the way to Alishan station now as the track was damaged in a typhoon and they’re not going to fix it).
You can buy tickets in advance here: The website is only in Chinese so use google chrome on your computer to translate the page. Pay by credit card then pick the ticket up at ANY major train station when you arrive in Taiwan (show your passport at the ticket window).
Guide to the train numbers here:
- LUNCH AT FENQIHU
Fenqihu was the popular stop for loggers at lunchtime so it’s a really cute little old town. The bento shop shown in the video is next to the 7-Eleven. When you arrive at Fenqihu, go all the way down the stairs, walk straight down the street and you’ll see it. Fenqihu isn’t big so you can wander around for the rest of the time. Unfortunately unless you stay in Fenqihu overnight, there’s not enough time to go hiking or see the lake (which is what the town is named after).
- BUS FROM FENQIHU TO ALISHAN TRANSPORT STATION
Use google maps for directions on where to catch the bus from (up on the highway). Set your destination as “Alishan station” and select directions for public transport. Schedules say the bus leaves at 2:40 but we arrived at the highway just before 2:30 and the driver said it was already past time to leave. So get there a little early! This is apparently the last bus, although you can catch another bus to Shizao, then change for a bus to Alishan (that seemed too annoying so we didn’t do it).
- DINNER AT ALISHAN
I haven’t seen one good food review on Alishan (it’s not what you’re there for anyway!) - so we just got beers and instant noodles from the 7 Eleven and enjoyed them at the hotel.
- STAY AT ALISHAN HOUSE
Look around for deals online, or stay at another hotel near the Alishan station ( There are quite a few. Don’t expect a cheap hotel to have good facilities, this is a very popular tourist destination. Book early especially in peak season!
- SUNRISE TRAIN
Tickets for the sunrise train (around 350nt round trip) are sold the afternoon before at the Alishan train station. If staying at Alishan house you can buy them straight from the hotel reception, or if staying somewhere else, go to Alishan train station to buy these.
- HIKING
There are trails around the train station area. Pick up a map from the station or your hotel. The train on top of the mountain can also take you to some of the attractions if you’re tired of walking.
- BUS BACK TO CHIAYI
Get a timetable from the 7-11 at the transport station (or your hotel will have one). Use your easycard/ipass card to pay for the bus fare BUT you need to “save your bus spot” at the 7 Eleven first. I tried doing this 30 minutes before catching the bus but there were no spots left so we had to wait 1.5 hours until the next bus. So do this as early as you can. The last bus leaving from Alishan transport station to go down the mountain is around 5:00 pm.
There are taxi drivers around the transport station trying to get you to go down the mountain with them. I don’t recommend this option.

【台灣好好玩】怎麽去墾丁 Taiwan Travel Guide | Kenting Beach Southern Taiwan
Kenting (墾丁, pronounced Ken-ding) is a popular holiday destination in Taiwan for tourists and locals. Come with us on a day trip to this beautiful place - there's lots more waiting for you here in Kenting!
HOW TO GET TO KENTING (FROM KAOHSIUNG):
FROM ZUOYING: The Kenting Express Bus leaves from Zuoying station (which contains both the high speed rail station and MRT station) and takes approximately 2.5 hours to reach Kenting Main Street. You can buy tickets from the Kenting Express Booth at the station (at the top of the escalators just outside the High Speed Rail Station) or you can buy tickets online here ( I recommend buying in advance for weekends, holidays and in peak season (July/August school holidays). The cost is nt300 per person, one way. The website is in Chinese but if you use the Chrome browser your phone/computer should automatically translate the pages - enough to figure out what you are doing. The bus has free wifi and USB charging ports.
FROM THE AIRPORT: There are also buses that leave from the Kaohsiung airport (also known as Xiaogang airport). You can only buy these tickets at the airport. There's a timetable here: You'll notice the destination on the website reads Xiaowan - this beach is right next to Kenting main street.
FROM KAOHSIUNG TRAIN STATION: Buses also leave from Kaohsiung Main Station although the pickup point is not clearly signposted - it's behind the MRT station. At time of writing (April 2018) the Kaohsiung main station is under heavy construction and I would recommend just catching the MRT to Zuoying instead rather than trying to find the bus amongst the chaos!
Beware of taxi drivers convincing you to ride with them - the fare is never cheaper than the bus, they will make you wait until their taxi is full of passengers, and the ride will definitely be less comfortable. It's definitely best to ignore them and get on the bus!
What to do in Kenting
There's quite a lot to do in Kenting, Taiwan - but it might be a bit different from the beach holidays you are used to. You can:
Relax on the beach - get a beer at the beach bar at Xiaowan ( find shelter under a crag - and if you have kids watch them play safely in the little stream that connects the river to the sea. There are also a range of water sports available here,
Browse the night market ( - this starts at sundown and is reportedly the longest in Taiwan. My personal favourite snacks here are the fried milk and the banana pancake.
Visit the Aquarium ( - I haven't done this yet but it's apparently a very good aquarium (just be aware that it's a bit outside Kenting, perhaps pair it with a day trip to Hengchun town),
Wander around Hengchun old town (perhaps start at Hengchun south gate ( and work towards Hengchun old street),
Swim at Nanwan beach ( - this beach is my personal favourite for swimming and it's also good for collecting shells and sea glass.
Learn to surf with Afei (who also runs a bed and breakfast):
Enjoy a meal at Bossa Nova ( run by a lovely Taiwanese family and their French daughter-in-law,
See fire coming out of the ground at Chuhuo natural gas spring (
Bird watch at Longluantan (
Eat sushi and ride in a glass bottom boat at Houbihu (
Snap a selfie at the southernmost point of Taiwan (
Check out Sail Rock, a huge coral reef rock that apparently looks like President Nixon (
How to get around Kenting
Hire an electric scooter - for nt600 per day you can hire a scooter to get around. There are many scooter hire stores on Kenting main street. No licence is needed but you do need your passport.
Catch the shuttle bus - a whole day ticket is nt150 and you can buy it on the bus - just say ONE DAY PASS clearly and they will understand. Map and timetable can be found here ( all in Chinese unfortunately. Alternatively, you can just pay with change as you go. The downside is that the buses don't come very often and the stops aren't that easy to find.
Taxi - being a holiday area, taxis often do not run the meter but will rather negotiate a fare with you up front. Taiwanese taxi drivers are generally not out to rip you off but you will definitely pay more than in other cities in Taiwan (if you are a westerner you will likely still think the price is very cheap compared to home). In return, you will ride in air conditioning!

Chiayi International Band Festival
Video taken in Chiayi City by Jose Boza
The local city government of Chiayi City is fully promoting its city to build Chiayi City into a Humanistic City - Band Capital. It will use symphonies to shape its culture, market its specialties and facilitate international exchanges. This cultural platform provides all of Taiwan's symphonic bands with an important stage to perform. The Chiayi City International Symphony Festival is a musical festival that invites international symphonic bands to Taiwan for musical exchanges. It is an event that the general public eagerly anticipates.
Chiayi City was transformed from a small, southern city to a symphonic city. The Symphony Festival is currently entering its 21st year; it is also the longest running event among those in the Formosa Art Festival, which is conducted by the Council of Cultural Affairs. Previous events had bands perform from the US, Canada, Germany, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Russia, Kazakhstan, Korea, China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and other countries.

Little London - Nightlife, Bars and Pubs, Taipei, Taiwan
Little London takes an interesting and unique spin on the classic English pub. Populated by all things British, Little London is the English expats' antidote to homesickness. The interior, menu and service all show the influence of a a neighbourhood London pub. Little London has become the living room of Taipei as stated by many locals. Little London has an arsenal of beer from various regions of the UK to some of the smallest craft breweries in the USA.
This cosy space is also suited to enjoying a selection of British teas or coffees, accompanied by a freshly baked pastry. Those trailing through Taipei can wonder into Little London for a truly English scone and jam, or the daily buns and pastry. All baked goods are homemade and served fresh. For something a bit more savoury, nibble at a sausage roll or English pasty.
