Portland Wartime Memories! WW2, Air Raids D-Day 1944, Castletown, Portland. Reg Gill phone conv 1984
Local postmaster, shopkeeper and boot-maker Reg Gill recalling life in Castletown, Portland which was under military occupation through the Second World War. Although profoundly deaf the 87-year old had a sharp memory. Reg (1897-1984) was a larger-than-life and popular character, who in 1935 founded the Portland Swimming Club, which went on to win the Dorset Water Polo championships for many successive years.

Portland's D-day Experience (We Got Caught By Police)
How's it going explorers so today we got caught by the police exploring an abandoned navy base on the isle of Portland. All wasnt lost as the police dropped us outside the D-day museum and it was amazing and we had lot of fun.
Castletown D-Day Centre is an authentic recreation of the busy wartime dockyard on the Isle of Portland, from which in 1944, thousands of American troops of the 5th US Corps and the US 1st infantry, embarked, bound for the heavily defended beaches of Nazi occupied France.

Dorset At War
This is an excerpt of a DVD produced by 1st Take. The complete film is available to order at 1st-take.com or by calling 01454 321614.Today, Dorset is considered by many to be the archetypal rural English county. However, in the Second World War, Dorset was front-line territory in the struggle with Nazi Germany, whose forces lay just across the English Channel in occupied France. As the tide of war turned in the Allies' favour, Dorset played a crucial role in the Normandy Landings, and ultimate victory.
In this 85-minute documentary, Dorset historian and author Colin Pomeroy conducts a tour of the county's war sites, some of which are very well known, while others are now virtually forgotten. Illustrated extensively by rare archive photographs, maps and drawings, this historical journey begins at Portland, where remnants of the Mulberry Harbour that fuelled the Normandy Invasion still stand. The tour continues to Weymouth, the embarkation point for thousands of American soldiers, and then Chesil Beach, which had been heavily defended earlier in the war, when it was feared that a Nazi invasion could strike at Lyme Bay.
Other highlights include visits to Tyneham Village, where American troops trained in readiness for the invasion of the continent; Warmwell aerodrome, from where Spitfires defended Britain, and USAAF Lightnings took the fight to the enemy; and St Aldhelm's Head, where TRE Worth Matravers performed such vital work in the development of radar.
Dorchester, Lyme Regis, Winyard's Gap, Sherborne, Blandford Forum, Bournemouth, Poole and Studland are also among the locations visited in this tribute to an extraordinary period in Dorset's history.

Exploration of Verne High angel Battery and Lost Tunnels
Located in Portland on the dorset coastline, this prison and military Battery was a pleasure to explore. The day we chose, fittingly, was windy and miserable, which really added to the eeriness of this prison combined fortress.
The Battery was build by the prisoners themselves. It holds many secrets, some we may never discover.
Secret Tunnel systems were frequent and easily accessible. Unfortunately, a farm is now positioned on the site of a huge underground bunker which is discussed by a unsuspecting bungalow.
Nether the less, you can spend all day exploring this forgotten city. I will definitely be retuning.......
