Vietnam: HALONG BAY TOUR FOR $20. How to travel to Cat Ba island?
How to get to Cat Ba?
There are several ways to get to Cat Ba. First of all you can book tickets which include the bus and ferry rides. But you can also book a single bus ticket to Hải Phòng, where the ferry leaves to Cat Ba. In Hải Phòng you can buy the ferry ticket to Cat Ba island. Where ever you book, make sure they take you to Cat Ba town (this is where the hotels and backpackers are).
bus from Tam Cốc to Hải Phòng
-minibus ride (6:30-09:50)
-costs around 120.000 VND (4,60 €/$4,30/£3,40)
-we booked in the Long Hotel in Tam Coc (staff is not nice and tries to scam people)
bus from Ninh Binh to Hải Phòng
-public bus from bus terminal
-83.000 VND (3,20 €/$3,65/£2,35)
ferry from Hải Phòng to Cat Ba town
-ferry leaves at the Bến Bính Pier (company: Hadeco)
-1.5 hour boat and bus ride
-a single ticket costs 170.000 VND (6,55 €/$7,50/£4,80)
-the ferry ticket includes a bus ride, as the ferry doesn’t always go to Cat Ba town. In this case you get transferred and they take you by bus to Cat Ba town.
The public transport from Cat Ba to Ha Noi is much cheaper as this is the capital of Vietnam. So you can book a ticket from Ha Noi to Cat Ba town and vice versa for around 230.000 VND (8,90 €/$10,15/£6,50) including all bus and ferry rides.
Where to stay on Cat Ba Island?
You definitely need to stay in Cat Ba town. You find many hotels for around 10-15 USD. But be careful, the prices on weekends triple. For us it was impossible to find a hotel room cheaper than 40 USD. We would recommend to go to Cat Ba during the week. Luckily we got two beds in CatBa Central Hostel (5$ incl breakfast). Even though we shared a dorm with 28 people, the room was quiet and nice.

VIETNAM | Exploring Halong Bay & Cát Bà | Private Boat Tour
During our Vietnam adventures we discovered a private boat tour of Halong bay and the Cát Bà area. This was by far one of the highlights of our Vietnam travels not only because we had the boat all to ourselves but because we could go to all the quieter serene spots in the area, cycle around peaceful villages but chill out all together in this absolutely stunning scenery and calm waters.
We discovered the private (and affordable) tour through a friend and between 4 people it ended up being a lot cheaper than the same number of nights on the busier cruises in the main part of Halong bay and we personalized the trip with kayaking and cycling through a village:

Cat Ba Island.
We are not great fans of organized tours but we decided to give it another try. We got a cruise tour around Cat Ba Archipelago and should admit that it wasn’t that bad idea. Price for the tour 310.000 dong (12.90 €) per person. Chill ride with couple of stops to stretch our legs and kayaking was a nice way to spend a day. Unfortunately at our first stop there were no monkeys on the Monkey island so we just walked around the island and the water wasn’t that inviting for swimming either. One of the advantages of organized tours is that you can meet a lot of nice people there. Of course we took advantage of this possibility!
Cat Ba island is not just hundreds of small islands but inland hiking trips as well. We checked Cat Ba National Park (40.000 dong entrance fee) with it’s biodiversity and beautiful trails. There are different options for hikes, you can even get to the seaside through the park (for that the best bet would be to get organized tour). We climbed one of the picks and enjoyed the view from above.
Kayaking can be really good alternative to organized boat tours so we decided to gain some independence and rented one. Paid 160.000 dong for half a day (after some reflection it seems quite pricey).
We went again to the Monkey Island and had more luck this time. Gang of monkeys was waiting for us. We managed to check closer floating fishing village with its over 4000 inhabitants (barely saw any people there thou), just barking dogs welcomed us there.
The island is relatively small so you can explore it in no time. Basically we explored every corner of it in one day. Our conclusion is that you can skip some of the industrial areas to the west. It’s easy to move around so renting a scooter can be good idea!
After couple of days of delicious seafood hot pots and scenic views we are ready to change scenery again. Ninh Binh this time!

Solo Kayak Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island
Here is a longer video of our kayaking excursion in Halong Bay, Vietnam. We stayed on Cat Ba Island and walked to Ben Beo Harbor and rented them from Blue Swimmer Adventures. They included a map, dry bag, spray skirt, and life jackets. We paid a little more than what some of the other operators offered but Blue Swimmer had the best gear and kayaks, which even had rudders on them.
If you're on a tight budget or looking to experience Halong Bay on your own without having to take a cattle boat cruise this is a great alternative. We were able to get closer to the limestone karsts, paddle through sea caves, enjoy secluded beaches, and see the floating village without a guided tour.
Cost of living in Vietnam (Cat Ba Island) // €500 a Month // Family Travel
We were living on Cat Ba island in Vietnam for the month of Nov which is low season and were shocked by how cheap it was. Heres a run down off how much it cost us to live on this beautiful island. I also run through a budget option as I think you could live there for as cheap as 500 a month!

????⚓???????? FLOATING DOGS of CAI BEO VILLAGE Lan Ha Bay CAT BA UNESCO HERITAGE Vietnam ???? HUAWEI P30 PRO
Most fascinating for me at the Floating Village Cai Beo was the fact that they had so many dogs patrolling the floating houses and guarding them! I even saw a cat! it is so amazing how that small universe is studded with pets and greenery on the porch and satellite dishes, one might think that the villagers are poor and can't afford a house on the land but actually they seem pretty happy right there!
On the way to the beautiful attractions of Lan Ha Bay that I recommend more than Ha Long Bay, you will pass by this village twice go & return. But there's so much to see with houses on both sides of the lagoon that I needed to go there 3 times (passing through 6 times in total) and still I don't feel it was enough, so picturesque and scenic it was!!
this last time I hired again the boatsman and told him to go slow but you will see it is not slow enough and also we are not getting too close to the houses to not annoy the locals, so I have to zoom in from side to side, house to house, to get the details. For this, my Huawei P30 PRO smartphone did a fantastic filming job! And so I managed to find quite a lot of dogs even though it wasn't easy. Wish I had another pair of hands to also take photos of this all... so...must go again one day!

The Best Halong Bay Cruise 2014 (do NOT book in Hanoi!!!!!!!!!!!)
- This is the second time in 2014 that I've done a Halong Bay cruise in Vietnam.
I booked through Alibaba's Hotel and Restaurant in Cat Ba.
For $25 I got:
A full day (8 hour) boat tour in and around Cat Ba Island/Ha Long Bay, Vietnam.
A semi-private tour (only 3 people in our group!) with 2 tour guides
A visit to a floating fishing village
A visit to Monkey Island (I saw two monkeys - score!)
An AMAZING authentic Vietnamese lunch cooked for us on the boat (fresh fish/seafood/shrimp, steamed rice w/spices and sauces, chicken and pineapple, clams, and homemade rice wine)
2 hours kayaking in CAVES - it's amazing, you kayak underneath the limestone cliffs and suddenly emerge in this lagoon. There are three secret lakes that connect to each other. They are unbelievably quiet, peaceful, and magical.
BEWARE: I've heard nothing but horror stories about booking a Halong Bay cruise through Hanoi - people get stuck on the boat for hours, and two of my friends got kicked OFF the boat b/c the company had overbooked. They had to find last minute accommodation for the night even though they'd already paid to stay overnight on the boat. Oh, and no refund was offered. No thank you!

Amazing Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay, Ha Long Bay Viet Nam Travel
Amazing Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay, Ha Long Bay Viet Nam Travel
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cát Bà Island is the largest of the 367 islands spanning 260 km2 (100 sq mi) that comprise the Cat Ba Archipelago, which makes up the southeastern edge of Lan Ha Bay in Northern Vietnam. Cat Ba island has a surface area of 285 km2 (110 sq mi) and maintains the dramatic and rugged features of Ha Long Bay. It is commonly used as an overnight hotel stop on tours to Ha Long Bay run by travel agents from Hanoi. This island belongs to Haiphong city.
Cat Ba is the largest island in the Bay and approximately half of its area is covered by a National Park, which is home to the highly endangered Cat Ba langur. The island has a wide variety of natural ecosystems, both marine and terrestrial, leading to incredibly high rates of biodiversity. Types of natural habitats found on Cat Ba Archipelago include limestone karsts, tropical limestone forests, coral reefs, mangrove and sea grass beds, lagoons, beaches, caves and willow swamp forests.
Cat Ba Island is one of the only populated islands in Ha Long Bay, with roughly 13,000 inhabitants living in six different communes, and 4,000 more inhabitants living on floating fishing villages off the coast. The large majority of the population can be found in Cat Ba town, which is located at the southern tip of the Island (15 km (9 mi) south of the national park) and is the commercial center on the Island. Since 1997, Cat Ba town has grown rapidly and has become a tourist hub for both the Island and greater Ha Long Bay. In addition, almost all areas of the island are deployed with free wifi access points as well as 3.75 generation mobile networks, which can make visiting and working on the island easier
Today, increases in infrastructure on the Island (including the building of bigger roads, dams to build harbors and to protect Cat Ba town from flooding, consistent electricity being brought to the island (which surprisingly happened as late as 1997) instead of having to rely on a generator, and large ferries and barges, able to transport trucks and cars to the Island from the mainland making daily trips to Cat Ba) made it easier for tourists to visit the Island, leading to a rapid increase in tourism and development in Cat Ba town starting in 2001. Since then, a stop on Cat Ba Island has been included in the itinerary of many Ha Long Bay cruises and a strip of tall, thin, five-storey budget hotels line the seafront, receiving more than 350,000 visitors a year.
Currently, over 150 hotels are listed in Cat Ba Island’s tourist directory pamphlet, from cheap budget hotels to flashier upscale resorts, and construction is underway on many more. Right now, construction is under way on the colossal Cat Ba Amatina, an enormous project that will transform the southern coast of the island. The Amatina compound will be a world-class integrated marina, casino, resort and theme park spanning 171.57 hectares and (VITC) will be able to host almost 6,000 residents at a time. The Amatina will boast seven resorts with over 800 villas, three marinas, one international convention palace, six five-star hotels and one four-star hotel (VITC). The scale of this project is gigantic and will basically create a luxurious mini-city on Cat Ba and will attract tourists from around the world.
Cat Ba Island has become the adventure-tourism capital of Vietnam, and many of the activities advertised are nature-based. Visitors can kayak and take boat cruises through Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago, hike through the national park, mountain bike around the Island, spend time hiking and swimming on Monkey Island just offshore, tourist can stay at Monkey Island Resort for real relax time on private beach, explore the Island's many caves, swim on Cat Co 1, 2, or 3 (three sandy beaches a short walk from Cat Ba town).

Cat Ba Historical name called Cac Ba Island means Women’s Island (Cac meaning all and Ba meaning women). Legend has it that many centuries ago, three women of the Tran Dynasty were killed and their bodies floated all the way to Cat Ba Island. Each body washed up on a different beach and all three were found by local fishermen. The residents of Cat Ba built a temple for each woman, and the island soon became known as Cat Ba.
????️
Archaeological evidence suggests that people have lived on Cat Ba Island for almost 6,000 years, with the earliest settlements being found on the southeastern tip of the Island close to the area where Ban Beo harbour sits today. In 1938, a group of French archaeologists discovered human remains belonging to the Cai Beo people of the Ha Long culture, which lived between 4,000 and 6,500 years ago… considered to be perhaps the first population group occupying the northeastern territorial waters of Vietnam… [and] the Cai Beo people may be an intermediary link between the population strata at the end of the Neolithic Age, some 4,000 years ago.
