WTD #13. Hiking & Rock Climbing Cathedral Spires! / Hiking with Kids / South Dakota Black Hills
This week we are hiking with kids at Cathedral Spires in the South Dakota Black Hills. We enjoyed discovering Deadwood South Dakota and getting off of the Needles road at the Cathedral spires in Custer State Park wraps up our series while exploring the Black Hills.
We got off the beaten path while hiking and rock climbing the cathedral spires! The trail was a little rugged at times but we like a little bit of a challenge.

Hiking at Custer State Park
Custer State Park is in western South Dakota.
6 mile day hike from Harney Peak to Sylvan Lake taking Trail 4. This trail offers glimpses of the Cathedral Spires and a wide range of different terrain: jagged rocks, green meadow, and thousands of dead pine trees - victims of the pine beetle. The parking area near the spires is one of 6 narrow tunnels on roads circling the Black Hills Harney Range.

Best Black Hills Hiking Trails - Sunday Gulch Trail (Custer State Park)
Sunday Gulch is one of the most unique hiking trails in the Black Hills, and one of my favorites. The trail is a 2.8 mile loop, rated strenuous, and takes 2-3 hrs to complete. See below for tips about hiking this trail.
Date Filmed: 6/13/2019
Tips
1. There is no cell phone service in this area. Pack appropriate food, water, and emergency supplies to spend the night on the trail if need be. You never know when you'll break an ankle hiking in rough terrain. You won't be able to call for help.
2. Best to start before 9am. This trail begins behind the dam at Sylvan Lake. Sylvan lake is a popular destination and the parking lot is usually full by 10am. The trail is not crowded, but there will be lots of people at the lake.
3. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in this area, your best bet to avoid them is to do this hike in the morning.
4. The trail is very rocky and good shoes are a must. You will get your feet wet.
5. You can hike the loop trail in either direction, but clockwise has proven to be the more enjoyable route for us. Have fun!
