César E. Chávez National Monument, Keene, CA
Between Barstow and Bakersfield, California is the relatively new César E. Chávez National Monument. Managed by the United States National Park Service, this modest park offers up a beautiful pastoral setting. Nestled amid rolling hills that are reminiscent of San Jose a century earlier, way before it evolved into Silicon Valley.
In this video, I explore the outdoor and indoor facilities of the park. The monument offers a classic California rural setting to explore. I recommend taking a walk and eventually sitting for a lunch during your visit. You may also want to see the latest exhibition in the main building. For those interested in the history of the United Farm Workers union, it could be quite informative.

SUMMARY
=======
Cesar E. Chavez National Monument is a 116-acre (47 ha) U.S. National Monument in Keene, Kern County, California located about 32 miles away from Bakersfield, California. The property was the headquarters of the United Farm Workers (UFW), and home to César Chávez from the early 1970s until his death in 1993, Chávez's gravesite is located in the property's gardens along with that of his wife, Helen Fabela Chávez. Originally developed as a headquarters and worker housing area for a quarry, it served as a tuberculosis sanitarium (known as Stony Brook Sanitorium) in the early 1900s, until its acquisition by the UFW in the early 1970s.
Celebration and Reflection at Chavez National Monument Designation
President Barack Obama's Dedication of the Cesar Chavez National Monument
KEENE, Calif. -- On October 8, 2012, over 6,000 people descended upon Villa La Paz -- the home, operational headquarters and final resting place of civil rights leader Cesar Chavez -- for President Barack Obama's dedication of the César Chávez National Monument. They came from throughout the country to see this 187-acre property in the foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains take its place among national monuments such as the Statue of Liberty and the Grand Canyon.
Although the dedication was celebratory in tone, many in attendance acknowledged that the dreams Chávez had for farm workers have not been entirely fulfilled.
