Positively Birmingham Walking Tours; Discovering Birmingham Tour No. 1
Positively Birmingham Walking Tour No. 3 is a bit different. It starts and ends at the Library of Birmingham in Centenary Square. After a general introduction to the city we quickly head to some hugely atmospheric canals that even locals do not know very well. We walk into the Jewellery Quarter and consider the different types of manufacturing that evolved there. We see the only remaining Georgian Square in the city centre and St Paul's Church. We discover amazing pieces of public art, such as Umbra in Church Street Square. We see how the city is taking forward redevelopment based on plans drawn up in 1988. We pass though key city spaces such as St Philips, Victoria, Chamberlain and Centenary Squares.

Shakespeare Memorial Room - Library of Birmingham
The Shakespeare Memorial Room on Level 9 of the Library of Birmingham.
Originally built in 1882 to hold the Shakespeare Library. Designed by John Henry Chamberlain. Elizabethan Style.
When the 1882 library was demolished in 1974, the room was dismantled and stored. Later it was re-erected as part of the School of Music complex.
It was dismantled from there, and rebuilt like a jigsaw puzzle in the golden circular structure at the top of the library.

Old Joe - University of Birmingham Brass Band at UniBrass 2019
University of Birmingham Brass Band performs Old Joe (David Birnie) at UniBrass 2019. The band came 4th in the UniBrass Trophy.
Conductor: Stuart Birnie
The University of Birmingham Music Society Brass Band is a very large, very friendly, non-auditioned band. In fact, with over 50 members, we are one of the largest brass bands in the country! We rehearse weekly, working towards a concert at the end of each term, however, for us, the social side of the band is equally important. We go to our beloved curry house twice a term, go bowling, and busking, and of course go to the pub after every rehearsal! The band is grateful to our conductor Stuart Birnie, who has been with us for the past four years, and we hope for many more fantastic years of music making together.
UniBrass 2019 was hosted by Bangor University Brass Band. In 2020, the contest will be returning to Bangor University and will be celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Sculpture in the City 2016 - Magic Lantern Small by Mat Collishaw
During the Winter of 2010 the cupola of the Victoria and Albert Museum hosted a specially commissioned light installation by British artist, Mat Collishaw. A grand scale zoetrope visible from the street below, created the effect of moths fluttering within the dome around
an oversized lantern. A smaller replica of the crown cupola zoetrope in the courtyard was lit during the day, providing a close-up view of the moths in flight.
About the commission, Collishaw said: “As the Victoria and Albert Museum is the world’s greatest art and design museum, I wanted to create a work that reflects the V&A’s standing as a monument to cultural achievement. The illuminated cupola represents the Museum itself as a beacon of light to which objects of beauty, activity and life are drawn.”
