Chapel of Jimmy Ray
Anado McLauchlin and his partner Richard Schultz have built a unique garden in a secluded area near San Miguel de Allende. The Chapel is not a place for prayer in the religious sense, but a place for meditation on the mysteries that inspire the artwork in which they live. The Chapel explores a mythological Jimmy Ray, inspired by Anado's father, Dr. James Rayburn McLauchlin. This event was an open house which also hosted art by Agustin Santoyo. His works are a reflection of his personal experiences, of contact with his immediate social and cultural context, and of a desire to explore new themes, a search that has found expression in collage, painting, installation and intervention in objects and spaces. The background music is Astor Piazzola remixes: Vuelvo al Sur by Koop, and El Viaje by 4Hero. If you like them, buy them. I did!

San Miguel de Allende House Tour by Roberto
Hi,
I hope all is well with you all. I'm having a great time. Here's some photos of a recent tour of two nearby houses.
This slide show documents a house and garden tour taken in San Miguel de Allende on Sunday, February 26.
First house visited the was called House of Flowers. The owners of this house arrived in San Miguel 13 years ago. They were smitten with the town and bought a rustic, dilapidated, 14 bedroom hotel with concrete beds, none of the rooms had Windows! It was used by the burro drivers for the caravans passing through town during colonial times when a great deal of silver was being taken out of these mountains by the Spaniards. The room rates were 70 pesos per night, that's about four dollars US at the current rate of exchange! With great vision in the house was redesigned and is now a light filled, fascinating home. The flower and fountain filled garden makes you think you are in Giverney! The living room-dining room area is covered by what may be the longest boveda ceiling in San Miguel. The furniture and most of the art work where made in San Miguel by local artisans. The rooms are filled with an eclectic collection of Mexican folk art, as well as collectibles from around the world. The all glass, jaw-dropping master bedroom on the third floor has views encompassing most of San Miguel's downtown church domes.
The second house visited was the Casa de Las Ranas. The New York Times described the home of the visionary artist Anado McLachlan and art historian Richard Schultz, It's nothing so static as pigment on a surface; It's a force. The LA Times concluded, it is the happiest house in San Miguel. Welcome to a visual wonderland, a kaleidoscope of whimsy, delight, and colorful chaos. The exterior of the home the home is awash with playful mosaics, found objects, murals and more. Enter the house and you are immersed in a dancing fanciful dream of color, design and outsider art. More mosaics, fanciful collections of the unordinary greet your eye. Painted mosaic doors lead to rooms taking the visitor to a new level of wonder and fancy. Quite possibly the largest boveda ceiling in San Miguel crowns the master bedroom. This house is not only a home but an art installation that has been covered by the world press from Mexico to the Bahrain. Come and immerse yourself in a visionary wonderland of joy.
The gallery at the Chapel of Jimmy Ray is a fanciful folly created Anado. Jimmy Ray is a mythical character that Anado has been flirting with in his art for over 30 years. The gallery area includes three buildings Casa Kali, the recently completed office, a composting toilet which is actually a thrilling circular throne and the chapel itself. In building the gallery compound, Anado revels in the opportunity to be able to create a living ever-expanding homage to the outlander tradition of visionary art. Already thousands of bottles have been used in constructing the three buildings that make up this magical compound; thousands more have been stockpiled for future walls and sculptural whimsy. Anado combines these recycled materials with intricate mosaic work using local Talavera tiles along with multitudes of sea shells, mirrors and other found objects.
