Wine Expert tastes Georgian Wines: Pheasant's Tears Rkatsiteli 2016
This week on Wine Tasting with Connal Finlay DWS; Connal is tasting through a range of Georgian wines from one of the top producers in the country: Pheasant's Tears. Pheasant's Tears is headed by the incredibly passionate John Wurdeman who set up his winery in 2006 after just falling in love with the culture and landscape of Georgia. They use purely the local grape varietals in their wines and they use traditional winemaking techniques.
The Rkatsiteli is one of the most well-known Georgian grape varietals and is heralded as being one of the top-quality grapes. It is capable of producing wines of such complexity, high acidity, and with a wide aromatic spectrum

They're a really young down to earth kind of couple, so they wouldn't just stick to the old world, you know French or Italian. So I then was thinking well, Prince Harry loves Africa, he's even taken Meghan to Africa and he also has a charity he loves in Lesotho in South Africa and South Africa is making fantastic wines and their white wines in particular are so exciting. I've actually chosen this wine here, it's called Serwer and it's from the Swartland which is probably the most cutting edge cool funky wine producing region in South Africa and they are a pretty cool couple.

Apparently Meghan is a huge fan, she's got expensive taste, but good taste of the super Tuscan Tiganello which is probably around £270 (GB) a bottle, £300 (GB) depends where you're getting it from.

Meghan is meant to be a wine lover and she talks about her love of wines, I think she probably would have, at least with the reds, I think she will definitely have input, I can absolutely see Prince Harry and his friends enjoying this very convivial wine which is then reflected in the rather fun and colourful label.

It's also £14 GB a bottle so I think this is much more in keeping with their ethos and being savvy with what they do decide to spend their time and money on.

Well it's amazing actually how influential how royal taste has been for the nation as a whole, as early as 1152 when Henry of Plantagenet married Eleanor of Aquitaine, England basically owned Gascony and south west of France, we actually owned Bordeaux and therefore were able to set up amazing trade with them and by far the cheapest wine to get hold of was from Bordeaux.

In the 1300s they would say about 300-million bottles of today's modern wine bottle was reaching British shores and I must admit Bordeaux wine was very different back then. It would have been more like a really, really, bad mulled wine because back then Bordeaux was marshland. They had to wait until the Dutch came to drain it all out to make any wines of real quality which is what we think of when we talk about claret, or Bordeaux wines now.

This monastery has been built by the Byzantine king Constantine and his mother Jelena in 4th century. This is confirmed with recent archaeological excavations when they found a foundation stone from 4th century and Byzantine tombs from 5th century.

Why do we make wine and bread? Because this is the beginning of everything, the best, the purest of all God's creations. We take this wine and bring it to God as our gift, at our prayers. At church service this wine turns into blood of Christ, and by consuming it, we became part of Christ's body. In this way, we are closer to God and we become part of his church.

Definitely, I would say that it is more than average. It is a high quality wine, which should be specially well drunk in combination with food. It is a rebellish, a rebellion wine when you drink it by itself. But with raw steak or pepper steak it is the best combination of food and wine.

The orthodox monks of southern Bosnia make a distinctive wine, which they say is one way of celebrating God.
The red wine has gained fame locally and has become highly prized.
STORYLINE:
There has been a Christian monastery in the Trebinje valley in southern Bosnia since the 4th century.
Here the eleven monks devote themselves to the service of God, with their respected wine.
Head monk, Sava Miric, tells the history of the Tvrdos monastic settlement, confirming that recent archaeological finds prove that the monastery existed in Byzantine times.
The Byzantine era began with the foundation of the eastern Roman Empire in the fourth century, to the fall of the Empire's capital to the Ottoman Turks in 1453.
The monastery's own history has been turbulent, and it was burnt to the ground on several occasions.
It was rebuilt by donations from Orthodox Serbs in the United States in late 18th century.
