The Chihuly Collection in St. Petersburg features Glass Art Movement
The Dale Chihuly Collection in downtown St. Petersburg, is clearly a one-of-a-kind collection. Chihuly, is a pioneer in the studio glass movement. He has been creating glass work for more than 40 years.
Located in one of the main art districts in the United States, the collection is part of the Morean Arts Center in downtown St. Petersburg.
The Chihuly Collection In St. Pete Features Glass Art Movement
The Dale Chihuly Collection in downtown St. Petersburg, is all made out of glass. His use of color and asymmetrical shapes make his work unique. Chihuly, is a pioneer in the studio glass movement. He has been creating glass work for more than 40 years.
Glass is made by heating sand at a temperature of 1700 °C until it becomes liquid. Sand undergoes a complete transformation when transformed into glass.
It’s in one of the main art districts in the United States. The collection is part of the Morean Arts Center in downtown St. Petersburg, located in 720 Central Avenue.
“Because we already have the Dali Museum, there was already history of single artist museums here in St. Pete,” said Andy Schlauch, executive director of the Chihuly Collection and the glass studio at the Morean Arts Studio.
This collection is the first installation of Chihuly’s art in a building all designed specifically to showcase his work. Most of Chihuly’s pieces start at $5,000, these small pieces take approximately 30 minutes to create, it all depends on the layers of color added.
“It is owned by the Morean Arts Center, they purchased a vast collection of Artwork by Dale Chihuly … with the intention that they would create a permanent exhibition,” said Schlauch.
Unlike traditional art museums, this collection encourages people to get up close and personal with the pieces.
“When you come to see Chihuly’s work you don’t see it, you experience it,” said Schlauch.
Dale Chihuly’s glass work is now in over 200 different museums.
The displays showcase glass bowls, flowers and massive chandeliers.
“I think it is worth coming through to see Dale’s work because if you see it once, then every time you see a piece in other cities or in other places where they have one, it will resonate with you, and you’ll realize that it’s a Dale Chihuly,” said Ryan Weiner, at The Chihuly Collection.
Tickets include a live glass blowing demonstration by local St. Petersburg artists.
“Everyone comes out saying how much they love it, and how amazed they are by it,” said Schlauch.
Admission costs $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for senior citizens, $12.95 for students, and children 5 and under are free.
“The gallery is interesting, the pieces are what I expected them to be,” said Paul Carroll, visitor.
The Morean Arts center opens Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday’s from noon to 5 p.m.

Phillip Jewell is a software engineer who holds a Masters degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan. He has been an avid photographer since high school and has studied illustration and design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA and Pratt Institute in New York, NY. Phillip designs and fabricates jewelry. He created the Blue Hat web site and photographed all of the jewelry viewed on the site.
Catherine attended Eastman School of Music and holds a Master degree in Vocal Music from the University of Michigan. She has sung professionally at Carnegie Hall, recorded with London Records and has sung with many opera companies, including Los Angeles Music Center Opera with Artistic Director Placido Domingo, San Diego and Long Beach Opera. Catherine's singing career ended when she fell down a backstage flight of stairs in an off-Broadway production and suffered a closed head injury. Several months after the accident, her husband Phillip enrolled the couple in an evening jewelry design class at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) at Midtown Manhattan. That class was followed by a second and a third. A lover of fine jewelry, Catherine had found the ideal release for her artistic talents.
