Kazan children railway
A few scenes from children (=pioneer) railway in Kazan. This railway is one year old, since it has been opened about August 30, 2007. The railway is about 4 km long, and is placed in a scenic forest place near Yudino (a suburb part in the west of Kazan city and major railway station), along 2 sections of automobile roads, so gradients are quite serious, but in normal railway range, though. The railway has 2 stations(=interlockings) at its ends, and 2 stations(=platforms) between them. There is 7 points on the whole railroad, 5 in one station and 2 in the other.
The train consists of 4 newly built passenger cars, each with 40 places (of _very_ little width - according to narrow gauge traditions!), and one diesel locomotive of TU7A family.
August 31 is just the last day of working of this railway in this year, because it works only in the summer. So, at the moment of this video, there is no children actually: the train and points/signals are operated directly by instructors.

Anastasia - Children in Movement Full interview
Anastasia was born in 2003 in Kazan, the capital city of the Russian Republic of Tartarstan. She is proud of her Tartar identity and loves the city of her birth, with its Asiatic, Muslim heritage, its mountains, lakes and forests, its language, food and traditions. As a child she was largely cared for by her maternal grandparents. They taught Anastasia her letters, her numbers and her “principles of life”.
Previous generations of Anastasia’s family were caught up in the tumultuous history of the Soviet Union, some fighting the Nazi’s in defence of Leningrad, some sent to the Gulag, and others still died of starvation under Stalin’s agrarian policy.
Later the family built good lives under Stalin. But when her mother was little older than 9 years old the Soviet Union collapsed, and “their lives were ruined”: people lost their jobs, there was chaos and it was generally believed that there was going to be war. But fortunately war didn’t come and gradually the crisis passed.
Anastasia’s schooling was strictly regimented and demanding. She attended Lyceum 121, a small local school with few resources. She loved the environment; the library, the large windows, the many plants, the ancient chalkboard and most especially the room in which she was surrounded by Tatar culture, sitting on the woven rugs and learning Tatar language. In Years 4, 5 and 6 she had three hours of homework each day and had to work hard from the early morning till eight in the evening. She was expected to learn long poems and stories and regularly had to give presentations in front of the class. It was really tiring, gave her headaches and her back hurt.
When she was 11 Anastasia remembers being told by her mother and step dad to mentally prepare herself for a move to England. She wasn’t at all worried about the move and the journey, when it began, was an epic one: fourteen hours by train from Kazan, rumbling through forests where bears, wild cats and wild dogs lived, before arriving at Moscow airport, and from there to Heathrow.
Her step-dad’s father drove them from the airport to his house in Birmingham. For Anastasia just being in a house was a “paradise”. In Russia everyone but the very richest lived in flats and apartments, so living in a house with a garden was wonderful to her and she felt as if she had her own castle.
At this time Anastasia had no English. In her very first school assembly, she sat listening and watching but had no idea at all what was being said. Her first months were difficult and she experienced prejudice and humiliation, but she tried to ignore it. Instead she concentrated on enjoying the school which she thought was heaven – it had good food, the teachers were kind, there were pens, pencils, paints, calculators, computers even – she felt as if she was on a different planet.
Further afield in Birmingham Anastasia really appreciates the public resources the city has to offer – the parks, the theatres and she especially delights in the new library. She is excited about the future and has aspirations to study politics and international relations at a good university, and go on to become a politician or to work in the United Nations. In the meantime she has a “tight relationship” with Russia, reading the Russian news and weather forecast every day. She speaks to her grandparents on a daily basis and keeps in touch with her Russian friends, returning to Kazan two or three times a year to visit.
“Some people were mocking my accent and making fun of it, but as the time went on I thought - that is my individuality, that is why I am unique. Everybody is unique and I’m unique because I’m from Russia and not from England, and I thought - that’s good!”
