Due to it’s long and narrow shape Chile is one of the most diverse countries on the continent. Therefore Backpacking in Chile is very attractive but also time consuming in matters of covering distances – you should plan your journey well and avoid underestimation of distances!

The BEST WALKING TOUR of Santiago City!!! (298 | Chile Travel VLOG)
27 September 2019 - Day 36 - Santiago
VLOG 298
This morning we are on the hunt for my Rode Microphone which I so stupidly broked on my way to the airport. Audio just isn’t the same once you use a microphone and I can’t go back to a internal mic. I bought this mic for $220AUD but in Chile the offical price is 208,000 - $430AUD!!! They pretty much jack it way up being an Australian company and shipping to the other side of the world! I thought about it for a sec but a bit of common sense prevailed.????
Being a bright and glaring afternoon I search my bag my sunnies and find the case empty. I LEFT THEM ON THE TOP OF SANTA LUCIA HILL!!! ????????????. I couldn’t believe it. My beloved sunnies which I’ve had with me since South East Asia and have brought all the way around the world with me. ????????I was devastated such a silly mistake made by myself. Easily replaceable item however the sentimental value that it held, I literally needed a moment. ????????
This afternoon we take a 3hr walking tour around #Santiago and visit the main sites of Bellas Artes, Plaza de Armas, La Moneda, GAM and Lastarria! A very fun and informative tour with #tours4tips its an awesome way to get around and break the surface of a brand new city. It made sense of the areas and the things I’ve seen over the last few days and even got to catch the subway with the group rather than trying to figure it out on my own.????
It just made me realise how much I still need to read and catch up on Chile’s rich cultural and political history, from the Incas to the Spanish conquest, and from their socialist president Allende to their authoritarian dictator Pinochet!! You know what I’ll be watching on YouTube tonight!! ????????▶️

The BEST of SANTIAGO ???????? Real Neighborhoods, Street Art, Parks & Food. Things to do in the city.
In this week’s video we pick up again in Santiago, Chile. This time around we decided to explore some of the trendier neighbourhoods of Santiago to find some fun things to in Santiago.
We start things off in the neighbourhood of Barrio Yungay. Yungay feels like a relatively quiet neighbourhood in Santiago full of amazing street art. If you’re a fan of street art and graffiti this is a must visit while in Santiago. We didn’t encounter too many other tourists and seemed to be mainly locals and families around. We visited a couple of parks including the Plaza Yungay as well as Parque Quinta Normal which happens to be one of the oldest parks in the city and contains a lake with old retro paddle boats. After exploring the park we found a little food truck park (Plaza de Bolsillo) where we had some chicken arepas.
After this we made our way to another part of the city called Lastarria. Lastarria is definitely more touristy but is also quite bohemian and trendy. We first came across a beautiful park called Santa Lucia Park that also had some beautiful fountains. Trevor needed a hair cut and we found a barber shop and craft beer called Barra Experimental. After this we walked around the Lastarria area where we came across street performers and vendors.
ABOUT SANTIAGO
Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city, sits in a valley surrounded by the snow-capped Andes and the Chilean Coast Range. Plaza de Armas, the grand heart of the city’s old colonial core, is home to 2 neoclassical landmarks: the 1808 Palacio de la Real Audiencia, housing the National History Museum, and the 18th-century Metropolitan Cathedral. La Chascona is the home-turned-museum of poet Pablo Neruda.
ABOUT CHILE
Chile is a long, narrow country stretching along South America's western edge, with more than 6,000km of Pacific Ocean coastline. Santiago, its capital, sits in a valley surrounded by the Andes and Chilean Coast Range mountains. The city's palm-lined Plaza de Armas contains the neoclassical cathedral and the National History Museum. The massive Parque Metropolitano offers swimming pools, a botanical garden and zoo.

Exploring Santa Lucia Hill | Santiago, Chile's Most Visited Site
I was actually going to skip visiting Santa Lucia Hill...but being that it was only .3 miles from the hotel we were staying...it was a no brainer to visit. And I am so glad we did. Such a beautiful park that spans beyond the hill we climbed.

GMBN's Travel Guide To Santiago, Chile | A Mountain Bike Scene Check
Nestled between the Andes and the Chilean Coastal Range, Santiago has a thriving MTB scene. San Cristóbal hill in the centre is ideal for quick lunch time laps; Las Varras trail network is a short ride from the city centre, perfect for racking up the post work miles; and the lift-accessed La Parva resort, of Andes Pacifico fame, can be shredded at the weekend????

Tour Santiago, Chile Like a Local: Visit a Popular Restaurant and Bar
The Santiago Like a Local tour included a yummy lunch at Galeon Restaurant in Mercado Central. A delicious cerviche (fish and mussels), a flat and mild fish called Reineta - huge dish of French fries/chips, vegetable, salad, fruit cocktail for dessert and a Pisco Sour, considered Chile's national drink.
If that wasn't enough, a visit to fun La Piejera Bar where a drink called Earthquake was invented. An Earthquake is one of those sweet, easy to drink, drinks similar to a Hurricane at Pat O'Briens in New Orleans. Don't ask how sick I got guzzling two of those. Both places are touristy, both places are enjoyable!
People of Chile
There must be few countries in the world which are so conditioned by their territory as Chile. Its awesome geography makes it both the longest and narrowest country on the planet; a land of simple, warm, hardworking and creative people, who live enveloped between the mountains and the sea. Its people and its geography, two of Chile's greatest assets.

Traveling is embedded into our relationship as we met on a Spring Break cruise in 2016. Since then, we haven't stopped traveling together in the United States and abroad. We left New York in July 2019 to travel the world and we took work with us, including starting a travel vlog. We have made it our mission to slow travel for 16 months throughout South America and Asia and to create travel videos along the way.
Traveling Atlas was created to capture our moments of taking risk, building connections, and seeing the world. We will be staying in each country we visit for about a month in order to experience cultures to our maximum capacity and to inspire others that they can do the same. We are Brandon and Erin, follow the journey and stay tuned.

20 Things to do in Santiago, Chile City Guide | Top Attractions Travel Guide Travel Video Transcript:
Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.
Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.
Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.
Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.
Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.
And that's a wrap for the Chilean capital! We hope you enjoyed this Santiago travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do, places to visit, and Chilean dishes to try in the city.

Ride Day 63: Santiago, Chile to Valparaíso, Chile
Full Post: After my bike was serviced, I decided I wanted to go to Valparaíso, Chile to check it out to make sure everything was working fine, Chris had joined me in Santiago, but his bike was still in service and mine wasn't, so off I go! Chris had also decided to spend a few nights there later in the week, so it would have been useless him coming along.
The first part of the trip was all about getting to Valparaíso, once there I cruised around town, had some lunch at a cool cafe and just toured about for a few hours.
The city of Valparaíso had some crazy street climbs and looked like it would be a cool place to stay. But didn't seem that great. It was another port city, but also renowned as a bit of a party place.
The Road back to Santiago
After I had done all my touristy things, I got a road map and spoke to a few locals about other routes back to Santiago. They showed me a route but warned me it is pretty much impassable in wet without some serious backup.
Anyway, it was dry and sunny and had been for a few days, so I decided to go for it. Wow, it was a tough ride and a long one too. I was getting worried it would never end and I would be stuck out there at night.
The first part swept through beautiful vineyards and old colonial style homes, near ruined. It was so much fun. Then the off roading started, and it took forever. The roads were pretty rough, and some powdered sand didn't help, especially at my skill level.
But, after about 3 hours off roading, I found a nice fresh bit of tarmac to take me home back to Santiago. I went through towns such as La Retuca, Canelillo and Cerro Viejo. It took me all up about 6 hours round trip and 200 miles (330km)
The off roading was an adventure, and I am sure I would not have got through it in the wet in time before dark. At times the road became a single track and was just so rough. But it was fun and anytime you venture off the road and it is a challenge, the end is a giant reward.
Valparaíso
Valparaíso is a port city on Chile’s coast. It's known for its steep funiculars and colorful, cliff top homes. La Sebastiana, the quirky former residence of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, is now a museum with far-reaching Pacific views. During the 19th century, an influx of European immigrants left their mark on the city’s architecture and cultural institutions, many of which congregate around downtown’s Plaza Sotomayor.
