Legends Of Chile
In 2018, Hollywood director James Orr produced, filmed and edited a short documentary about one of the most exciting and most improved wine regions in the world: Chile. It focused on three icon wine producers: Almaviva, Clos Apalta and Seña. James scored nine wines from these producers a perfect 100 points over the last five years. These three wineries tell the story of the Legends of Chile. They demonstrate a tireless dedication to pushing the limits of quality and continue to take the wines of Chile to new heights with each vintage.

Chilean Wine and Vineyard tour #2
Casablanca Valley
The 650 hectare estate is located on sloping hills planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The soil here is predomininantly composed of alluvial deposits from the Maipo basin and granite from the Coastal Mountain Range.
The winery, built in 1999, is architecturally reminiscent of old Chilean missions or the southwest American Indian pueblo, pleasingly blended into an attractive but functional structure. Situated deep within the famous Casablanca Valley of Chile, it lies on the William Cole Vineyards estate and, by virtue of its proximity to the village of Casablanca, is easily accessible by visitors.
The winery's capacity of 2.2 million litres is provided by 92 stainless steel tanks allowing William Cole to fulfil their mission to produce the finest possible wines using modern technology and meticulous attention to every processing detail.
All wines are bottled on the estate, which is open to visitors.
Tourists pick their own grapes at Chile wine harvest fest
(28 Mar 2018) LEADIN:
Chile's wine harvest draws thousands of tourists each year.
The experience at Viu Manent winery offers tourists the chance to ride on horse-drawn carriages in the pastures of the Colchagua Valley, one of Chile's best-known wine regions.
STORYLINE:
Armed with sharp scissors and donning dusty gloves and aprons, dozens of tourists are walking through rows of green centenary vines.
They're hand-picking dark, purple grapes that will eventually be turned into fine Chilean wines and drank worldwide.
It's hard, but gratifying work under the scorching sun, the professional pickers that observe them from a distance with a grin, know it all too well.
But this group of tourists have paid for the hands-on experience at Chile's harvest, which draws thousands of tourists to the South American country each year.
Very beautiful, to see all the process of vine production, it's very interesting, says Danish tourist Jins Skuvrup.
They carefully cut the precious grapes in bunches and deposit them into heavy wooden crates.
It's a marvelous experience, a unique experience, that you cannot pass up, says Colombian tourist, Gina Cuesta.
You drink the wine, but you don't know the process.
Chile has been making wine since the mid-1500s, when Spanish settlers brought the first vines, and has long established itself as one of the top exporters as well as a main supplier of reliable and affordable wine.
The experience at the Viu Manent winery also offers tourists the chance to ride on horse-drawn carriages or electric bikes in the pastures of the Colchagua Valley, one of Chile's best-known wine regions.
Founded in 1935, Viu Manent was awarded Winery of the Year in 2017 by the Wines of Chile association.
I think that some vineyards have some initiatives, says Freddy Grez, who's in charge of Viu Manent's tourist activities.
But none is so complete and focused to the integral experience of viticulture and enology as ours, this is a full-day experience.
Each year, about 37,000 tourists - most from Brazil and the United States - visit the winery, located about 90 miles (140 kilometers) south of the Chilean capital each year.
The two-hour drive from Santiago along the so-called Wine Trail gives tourists the chance to wine-hop at guesthouses and restaurants that offer the Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other varieties that have made Chile famous.
Chile is the world's no. 9 wine producer, with an output of about 800 million litres last year, the world's fourth-largest exporter of wine by volume, and the top one among New World producers.
Chile's natural barriers have a lot to do with its successful wine evolution: it is shielded by the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Andes Mountain on the east, Antarctica to the south and the world's driest desert in the north.
This has helped protect Chile from diseases that affect the vines, helping winemakers to grow vines ungrafted, using ancient cultivation techniques.
In recent years, Chilean winemakers have also been looking for other temperatures and terrains.
In a quest for a more interesting juice, they've experimented with different wine tastes and characters, often in extreme places that range from the icy south to the northern Atacama Desert.
Back at the Viu Manent winery, tourists have gathered about 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) of grapes.
It seems like a lot but, Grez says that depending on the harvest, a professional worker can pick twice, or as much as four times more than that - anywhere from 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms) to 4,400 pounds (2,000 kilos) a day.

Casablanca Valley, Chile 2019.- Casas del Bosque and Bodegas Re wineries
The award-winning Vina Casas del Bosque winery lies within the Casablanca region of Chile. Casas del Bosque started as a boutique family winery in 1993 and now maintains 573 acres (232 hectares) of productive vines; the winery’s specialty is Sauvignon Blanc, but Chardonnay, Riesling, Syrah and Pinot Noir are also grown.
Bodegas Re are unique conceptual wines, which involve RE Creation of ancestral Genesis, through the use of artisan processes of wine making in clay amphoras, with current techniques and knowledge.
Casablanca Valley, situated on the coastal plain between Santiago and Valparaiso, is Chile’s most famous wine region despite being relatively new to the global wine scene, with wine production beginning as late as the mid-1980s. As a young valley of premium wines, Casablanca Valley boasts a large number of wineries boasting the latest modern technology, many of them boutiques wineries. Despite its late start wine production in the Casablanca Valley has gained recognition in particular for the white wine production of splendid crisp Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but also for some stunning reds such as Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah. It’s one of the cooler wine regions in Chile, with a Mediterranean climate similar to...
