Cholla Cactus Garden Trail, Joshua Tree National Park, California
This is a video tour of the Cholla Cactus Garden Trail in Joshua Tree National Park, California. The trail is in a location dominated by Opuntia bigelovii, also know as the cholla cactus, jumping cholla, or teddy bear cholla. The branches of this cactus are jointed and detach easily, so any mammal or bird that comes into back with this cactus will face painful impalement by the microscopic barbs known as glochids. The ground around a mature plant is often littered with scattered cholla balls and small plants starting where these balls have rooted. Desert pack rats such as the desert woodrat gather these balls around their burrows, creating a defense against predators. The teddy bear cholla is extremely combustible.

The Cholla Cactus Garden is one of Joshua Tree National Park’s true one-of-a-kind features. Located at the merger of the upper Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert, this level quarter-mile loop provides access to an intense concentration of cholla cacti. Perhaps the cutest cactus on the planet, the cholla has been nicknamed the teddy bear cactus, but this is one teddy bear you do not want to hug! The cactus is covered in spines that will latch in to your skin on the slightest touch. This defense mechanism is effective for desert survival but can create an unpleasant experience for those who don’t stick to the trail. There is a pamphlet at the trailhead that provides more information about this unique desert plant. The short easy hike is well worth the stop.
To get to the trailhead: The Cholla Cactus Garden is the main attraction on Pinto Basin Road on the way to Cottonwood Springs (and the trailhead to Lost Palms Oasis). From Park Boulevard, take Pinto Basin Road for 12 miles. The Cactus Garden is on the south side of the road.

We've hiked to abandoned mines, explored major park attractions and their surroundings, and learned about the desert vegetation. Unfortunately though all things come to an end - including our time at this American gem. Our final adventures took us to the top of Ryan Mountain - one of the tallest mountains in the park - for an incredible panoramic view, as well as the Cholla Cactus Garden and Arch Rock Nature Trail.

Free Camping at Chiriaco Summit, CA and Day Trip to Joshua Tree National Park
Camped two nights at the free dry camping area located behind the General Patton Memorial Museum in Chiriaco Summit, California. If staying for more than one night, register with the on-site campground manager (5 day maximum stay according to the campground manager). Patronizing the museum isn’t required, but both Melody and I spent two hours taking in this fantastic military museum. It was an emotional experience that I had not anticipated and brought back a flood of memories. The entry fee for a veteran was $9 and regular adult admission $11. On Day 2 of our stay we made a day trip to the nearby Joshua Tree National Park and were back at basecamp by 3PM. AT&T cellular service clocked in at 126 Mbps download speed and 49.3 Mbps upload speed. Verizon cellular service clocked in at 81.7 Mbps download speed and 25.4 Mbps upload speed. Fuel, fast food, coffee, ice cream, and convenience items are available within walking distance of this free campground. Road noise from nearby Interstate 10 was the only detractor during our visit. Still — for a short stay passing through, this free big rig friendly camping area is a keeper.

A Thriving Desert - Joshua Tree National Park
Located just two hours east of Los Angeles, Joshua Tree National Park is a one-of-a-kind desert getaway that boasts some of the most dramatic scenery in southern California. From the weird and wonderful Mojave Desert to the vast and stark Sonoran Desert, lies one of North America’s most strange and surreal environments—Joshua Tree National Park. The twisted trees, impossible rock formations, and other-worldly geography of Joshua Tree have enticed rock climbers and rock stars alike to explore this desert wonderland. Described by early settlers as, “The most repulsive tree in the vegetable kingdom,” the Joshua tree is endemic to the southwest and is an indicator species of the Mojave Desert Hidden Valley - surrounded by towering rocks and was used as a hideout by cattle wrestlers in 1800s
Keys View – Bask in panoramic views of Palm Springs and Coachella valley from one of the highest points in the park
Ryan Mountain – a dramatic hike that offers sweeping views in the heart of Joshua Tree
49 Palms Oasis - this gorgeous palm oasis, reached by a moderate trail, is one of the finest destinations in the park
Arch Rock Nature Trail – stroll along fantastic border formations in route to a dramatic natural stone arch
Cholla Cactus Garden - this magnificent garden of multicolored cacti is one of the most surreal sites in the park
Hike to this “Lost” Palm Oasis nestled in a remote Canyon and reached by a 3.5 mile trail
