Andros Island Cyclades
Andros, or Andro (Greek: Άνδρος) is the northernmost island of the Greek Cyclades archipelago, approximately 10 km (6 mi) south east of Euboea, and about 3 km (2 mi) north of Tinos. It is nearly 40 km (25 mi) long, and its greatest breadth is 16 km (10 mi). Its surface is for the most part mountainous, with many fruitful and well-watered valleys. The area is 380 km2 (147 sq mi). The largest towns are Andros (town), Gávrio, Bátsi, and Órmos Korthíou.
The island is famous for its Sariza spring at Apoikia where the water comes out of a lionhead. Palaeopolis, the ancient capital, was built into a steep hillside, and its harbor's breakwater can still be seen underwater.
The island in ancient times contained an Ionian population, perhaps with an admixture of Thracian ancestry. Though originally dependent on Eretria, by the 7th century BC it had become sufficiently prosperous to send out several colonies, to Chalcidice (Acanthus, Stageira, Argilus, Sane). The ruins of Palaeopolis, the ancient capital, are on the west coast; the town possessed a famous temple, dedicated to Dionysus. In 480 BC, it supplied ships to Xerxes and was subsequently harried by the Greek fleet. Though enrolled in the Delian League it remained disaffected towards Athens, and in 477 had to be coerced by the establishment of a cleruchy on the island; nevertheless, in 411 Andros proclaimed its freedom, and in 408 withstood an Athenian attack. As a member of the second Delian League it was again controlled by a garrison and an archon. In the Hellenistic period, Andros was contended for as a frontier-post by the two naval powers of the Aegean Sea, Macedon and Ptolemaic Egypt. In 333, it received a Macedonian garrison from Antipater; in 308 it was freed by Ptolemy I of Egypt. In the Chremonidean War (266-263) it passed again to Macedon after a battle fought off its shores. In 200, it was captured by a combined Roman, Pergamene and Rhodian fleet, and remained a possession of Kingdom of Pergamon until the dissolution of that kingdom in 133 BC. Before falling under Turkish rule, Andros was from AD 1207 till 1566 governed by the families Zeno and Sommaripa under Venetian protection (see: Duchy of the Archipelago). Then the island was again under direct Ottoman rule. After a few centuries, Cyclades joined the rest of Greece in 1821.
On May 10, 1821, Theophilos Kairis, one of the leading intellectuals of the Greek Revolution, declared the War of Independence by raising the Greek flag at the picturesque cliffside church of St George: at this time, a famous heartfelt speech, or ritoras (ρήτορας), inspired shipowners and merchants to contribute funds to build a Greek Navy to combat the Ottomans.
Around Greek Islands - Andros, Tinos, Syros
The Northern Cyclades - Andros, Tinos, Syros
Andros (Άνδρος) is the northernmost island of the Greek Cyclades archipelago, approximately 10 km south east of Euboea, and about 3 km north of Tinos. It is nearly 40 km long, and its greatest breadth is 16 km. The largest towns are Andros (town), Gavrio, Batsi, and Ormos Korthiou.
Tinos (Τήνος) is a Greek island situated in the Cyclades archipelago. The closest islands are Andros, Delos, and Mykonos.
Tinos is famous amongst Greeks for the Church of Panagia Evangelistria. The island is located near the geographical center of the Cyclades island complex, and because of the Panagia Evangelistria church, with its reputedly miraculous icon of Virgin Mary that it holds, Tinos is also the center of a yearly pilgrimage that takes place on the date of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (15 August, Dekapentavgoustos in Greek).
Syros (Σύρος), is a Greek island in the Cyclades. It is located 78 nautical miles (144 km) south-east of Athens. The largest towns are Ermoupoli, Ano Syros, and Vari. Ermoupoli is the capital of the island and of the Cyclades. It has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus.

Schinoussa - Videos from Greece
Schinoussa is located in the south of Naxos, in the middle about of the Lesser Cyclades island group. It is the fourth largest island of the Lesser Cyclades and the second most populated, after Ano Koufonisi. The island has three settlements, Chora the capital of the island, Mesaria and Mersini where is the port of the island. The derivation of the name Schinoussa is not precisely known. It is believed that the name either derives from the corruption of the ancient name Echinousa or from a Venetian nobleman named Schinoza. Schoinoussa has been inhabited since antiquity. On the island there are sites of archaeological interest including ancient Greek and Roman ruins, ruins of a Byzantine church and a small medieval castle. From the 11th century the island was the property of the Hozoviotissa Monastery on the nearby island of Amorgos.
GREECE, EXPLORING the ancient (6th century BC) TEMPLE of APOLLO ????️, Island of NAXOS
SUBSCRIBE: - The most famous landmark of Greece's Naxos Island is the Portara, a massive 2,500-year-old marble doorway that leads nowhere. The Portara is the entrance to an unfinished temple that faces directly toward Delos, Apollo's birthplace. For this reason most scholars believe it was dedicated to Apollo, but some think it was built in honor of Dionysus, who was worshipped on Naxos Island.

Sailing Through Greece: Cyclades E19 Amorgos
Next episode: Cyclades, E20 Kythnos
This episode: Cyclades, E19 from Santorini we sail to Schinoussa and to Amorgos with the meltemi. Schinoussa lies south of the island of Naxos, The population was 256 inhabitants at the 2011 census, since the 11th century the island has been the property of the Hozoviotissa Monastery on the nearby island of Amorgos. It owes its name to the mastic tree shrub that grows all over the island. The landscape has low green hills and small valleys between them, with many sandy beaches with turquoise water sparkling under the hot sun. Livadi Beach is located on the southwestern coast of the island and is just 850m from the town of Chora.
Throughout history, Amorgos was also known as Yperia, Patagy, or Platagy, Pagali, Psichia and Karkisia. It features a lot of remnants of ancient civilizations. . Amorgos is distinguished by the size and quality of the walls surrounding the city of Arkesini, by the ancient towers whose remains are scattered all over the island, by the ancient tombs, the stone tools, the inscriptions, the vases and by other antiquities. The island was featured in Luc Besson's film The Big Blue. Agia Anna and the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa can be seen in the film. Katapola, one of Amorgos' two harbours, is a small, vibrant community, drenched in the cycladic sun. Its waterfront is lined with cafes, tavernas and moorings for fishing boats and visiting sailing boats. On the hill above Katapola, the excavations of the ancient city of Minoa are of great interest to the visitor as they provide the thread to a continuous 3000 year existence. Next to Katapola, you find the small hamlet of Rahidi, dominated by the large church of Agios Georgios. The most picturesque part of the bay is the hamlet of Ksilokeratidi, opposite Katapola, with its pretty narrow streets and its traditional tavernas.
The Meltemi are the strong, dry north winds of the Aegean Sea, which blow from about mid-May to mid-September.They are at their strongest in the afternoon and often die down at night, but sometimes meltemi winds last for days without a break. . These winds are dangerous to sailors because they can come up in clear weather without warning and can blow at 7-8 Beaufort. Some yachts and most inter island ferries cannot sail under such conditions. The Cyclades comprise about 220 islands, the major ones being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Eschati, Ios, Kea, Kimolos,Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros, Tinos, and Thira or Santoríni. The name Cyclades refers to the islands forming a circle (circular islands) around the sacred island of Delos. Most of the smaller islands are uninhabited.

Sometimes these towns also have alternate names; thus Paros town is sometimes known as Parikia. In addition to these names, the main town on an island is often also referred to locally on the island as Hora (sometimes spelled Khora), which basically means the place: thus Hora on Naxos means Naxos town, while Hora on Paros means Paros town.
