Facts about russia. Facts about Russian Holidays
Facts about Russia.
Russia is one of the absolute world leader in the number of holidays and festivals. There are 8 Public holidays, if they fall on a Saturday or Sunday, they may be moved to a weekday (defined by the government). And also all citizens are entitled to a 28-day vacation that periodically allows Russia to get the title of the lazy country. Totally the Russians have more days-off in a year than citizens of any other country.
New Year in Russia is celebrated on January 1, the first day of the Gregorian Calendar. People greet the new year with champagne and listen to the Kremlin chimes beating at Midnight.
There are lots of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree glittering with coloured lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present.
In Russia, Christmas is annually celebrated on January 7th, thanks to the Russian Orthodox Church that has made it an official holiday in the country. Today, Christmas is celebrated in the country in a grand fashion, with the faithful participating in an all-night Mass in Cathedrals. In Russia, many people don’t eat meat, eggs or milk from a few weeks before Christmas and it is customary to fast until after the first church service on Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve dinner is meatless but festive. The menu usually depends on the wealth of the families. A typical Christmas dinner however, includes delicacies such as hot roast Pirog (Russian pies made out of meat or cabbage), and Pelmeni (meat dumplings). The most important ingredient is a special porridge called kutya. The traditional ingredients that go in its preparation are wheatberries (or other grains which symbolize hope and immortality), and honey and poppy seeds which ensure happiness, success and peace. The kutya is eaten from a common dish to symbolize unity.
The holiday originated in the USSR, then February 23 was annually celebrated as a national holiday - Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. After the Soviet Union collapsed, Russian people continued to celebrate this day as a day of military glory of Russia. Initially, this day has great meaning – to love and to honor our Fatherland, and, if necessary, be able to defend it.
March 8 - International Women's Day . Historically we celebrated the achievements of women in the political, economic and social fields. The modern celebration of Women's is considered the day of spring, female beauty, tenderness, wisdom and mental attention to a woman, regardless of its status and age.
In modern Russia May 1 is celebrated as the Holiday of Spring and Labor . In the USSR, the first of May was a holiday of job. In today's Russia, the holiday has lost its original political nature. It is estimated by some media, that for most citizens of the country this day is just an occasion for festivities, additional day-off and the beginning of summer cottage season.
The greatest national holiday in our country is Victory Day. On the 9th of May, 1945, our army completely defeated the German fascists and the Great Patriotic War ended. We'll never forget our grandfathers and grandmothers who died to defend our Motherland. We honour their memory with a minute of silence and put flowers on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
On June 12 1990 the First Congress of People’s Deputies of the Russian Federation adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The Day of Russia is one of the “youngest” holidays celebrated in Russia; it is considered to be the symbol of national unity and common responsibility for the present and the future of our Fatherland. For many Russians the Day of Russia or the Day of signing the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the RSFSR is a holiday, which contributes to patriotic upbringing of the youth.
Day of military glory of Russia - People's Unity Day is celebrated in our country every year on November 4 since 2005. This holiday established in honor of an important event in the history of Russia - the liberation of Moscow from Polish invaders in 1612.

Main characteristic of russian sculpture is monumentality. Has a strong relation with its history and great dramatism. At the beginning it was not very developed due to the prohibition of idolatry. After the changes of Peter I, sculpture began to seem like european sculpture.

SUMMARY
=======
The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC; Russian: Ру́сская правосла́вная це́рковь, tr. Rússkaya pravoslávnaya tsérkov), alternatively legally known as the Moscow Patriarchate (Russian: Моско́вский патриарха́т, tr. Moskóvskiy patriarkhát), is one of the autocephalous Eastern Orthodox Christian churches, since 15 October 2018 not in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. The Primate of the ROC is the Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus'. The ROC, as well as the primate thereof, officially ranks fifth in the Orthodox order of precedence, immediately below the four ancient Patriarchates of the Greek Orthodox Church, those of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. The official Christianization of Kievan Rus' widely seen as the birth of the ROC is believed to have occurred in 988 through the baptism of the Kievan prince Vladimir and his people by the clergy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate whose constituent part the ROC remained for the next six centuries, while the Kievan see remained in the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate until 1686.
The ROC currently claims its exclusive jurisdiction over the Orthodox Christians, irrespective of their ethnic background, who reside in the former member republics of the Soviet Union, excluding Georgia and Armenia, although this claim is disputed in such countries as Estonia, Moldova and Ukraine and consequently parallel canonical Orthodox jurisdictions exist in those: Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church and Metropolis of Bessarabia, respectively. It also exercises ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the autonomous Church of Japan and the Orthodox Christians resident in the People's Republic of China. The ROC branches in Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Moldova and Ukraine since the 1990s enjoy various degrees of self-government, albeit short of the status of formal ecclesiastical autonomy. In Ukraine, ROC (represented by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church) has tensions with schismatic groups supported by the current government. The debate over recognition of the Orthodox church in Ukraine as autocephalous has caused tension between the Russian Church and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. The ROC should not be confused with the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), another autocephalous Orthodox Church (since 1970, albeit not universally recognised in this status), that traces its existence in North America to the time of the Russian missionaries in Alaska (then part of the Russian Empire) in the late 18th century, and still adheres to the ROC liturgical tradition.
The ROC should also not be confused with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (also known as the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, or ROCOR), headquartered in New York, New York, U.S.A. The ROCOR was instituted in the 1920s by Russian communities outside then Communist Russia, which refused to recognize the authority of the Moscow Patriarchate then de facto headed by Metropolitan Sergius Stragorodsky. The two Churches reconciled on May 17, 2007; the ROCOR is now a self-governing part of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Russian Church Bell Ringers
Whilst exploring St Euthymius Monatery in Suzdal Russia we were privileged to hear (and see) an extraordinary example of 'bell ringing'.
The Saviour Monastery of St. Euthymius is a monastery in Suzdal, Russia.
The monastery was founded in the 14th century, and grew in importance in the 16th and 17th centuries after donations by Vasili III, Ivan IV and the Pozharsky family, a noble dynasty of the region. Among the buildings erected during this period were the Assumption Church, the bell tower, the surrounding walls and towers, and the seven-domed Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour. The cathedral was built in the style of the Grand Duchy of Vladimir-Suzdal. Its interior contains restored frescoes by the school of Gury Nikitin of Kostroma, dating from 1689. The tomb of Dmitry Pozharsky lies by the cathedral wall.
The monastery also contains a prison, built in 1764, which originally housed religious dissidents. The prison continued in use during the Soviet period, and among its better known prisoners was field marshal Friedrich Paulus, who was incarcerated here for a time after his surrender at Stalingrad[citation needed]. The prison now houses a museum about the monastery's military history.
Trip to Russia Vlog #2
Really my first day actually in Russia. I finally arrived in Moscow and after a short rest we headed off to explore the snowy city and got to ride the Subway with my sister, walked around Red Square, stopped by luxury shopping destination GUM and had some wine and tasty treats there, and then we went to Bol’shoy Theatre to see Taming of the Shrew ballet. Amazing day! So many things to see. It’s impossible to see everything unless you want to be exhausted, overwhelmed and not enjoy it...so just take your time when you here and schedule only a couple of things.
