Situated in one of the most deprived areas of Glasgow, the Citizens Theatre is one of the UK’s most established producing theatres. Led by Artistic Director Dominic Hill, the Citizens’ - or ‘Citz’ as it’s affectionately known - vision is to enhance and transform lives through performance and participation that everyone can access. Specialising in bold and accessible interpretations of classic texts, the company believes that stories originally created in the past have the power to enlighten our lives and behaviour today; and that great literature speaks relevantly and powerfully over centuries.
Based on the epic Greek tragedy, Zinnie Harris’ 'Oresteia: This Restless House' is very much a contemporary play with language and settings familiar to a modern audience. Given a domestic setting, it examines how a family might react in the face of extreme rage and how a person lives with the emotional consequences of great trauma. With the bulk of the action seen through the eyes of Clytemnestra and her daughter Electra, women are central to Dominic Hill’s emotionally intense and visceral production.
