Liverpool
Liverpool is a city and metropolitan borough of Merseyside, England, along the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. It was founded as a borough in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. Liverpool is the fourth largest city in the United Kingdom and has a population of 435,500, and lies at the centre of the wider Liverpool Urban Area, which has a population of 816,216.
Historically a part of Lancashire, the urbanisation and expansion of Liverpool were largely brought about by the city's status as a major port. By the 18th century, trade from the West Indies, Ireland and mainland Europe coupled with close links with the Atlantic Slave Trade furthered the economic expansion of Liverpool. By the early 19th century, 40% of the world's trade passed through Liverpool's docks, contributing to Liverpool's rise as a major city.
Inhabitants of Liverpool are referred to as Liverpudlians but are also known as Scousers, in reference to the local dish known as scouse, a form of stew. The word Scouse has also become synonymous with the Liverpool accent and dialect.[3] Liverpool's status as a port city has contributed to its diverse population, which, historically, were drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly those from Ireland. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
The popularity of The Beatles and the other groups from the Merseybeat era contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination; tourism forms a significant part of the city's modern economy. In 2007 the city celebrated its 800th anniversary, and in 2008 it held the European Capital of Culture title together with Stavanger, Norway.
In 2004, several areas throughout the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO. Referred to as the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, the site comprises six separate locations in the city including the Pier Head, Albert Dock and William Brown Street and includes many of the city's most famous landmarks. Liverpool City - استكشف مدينة ليفربول
Liverpool has attractions littered throughout the city and more museums and galleries than any other UK city outside of the capital. Each attraction is leading in its own right, but there seems to be a few ‘big hitters’ that everyone wants to know about.
We’ve got museums, galleries, unique historic buildings, arts centres and sport too!
Now there’s one thing that a trip to Liverpool just isn’t complete without, and that’s a trip on the ‘Ferry cross the Mersey’ – the views from the Mersey Ferries River Explorer Tour offer some of the absolute best views of Liverpool’s world famous waterfront. If you check far enough in advance, you might want to book on a special evening cruise that take place in the summer.
Stop off at Spaceport for all things intergalactic or the U-Boat Story for a fascinating insight into the World War II submarine.
If you’re a creature of culture, then you’ll need to make time for these SEVEN museums – yes, seven. National Museums Liverpool boasts World Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Walker Art Gallery, Lady Lever Art Gallery, International Slavery Museum, Sudley House and Museum of Liverpool - the world’s first national museum devoted to the history of a regional city.
The Albert Dockis one of the UK's finest heritage attractions – a walk around the quayside will take visitors passed little sweet stores, world-class museums including Tate Liverpooland The Beatles Story – yes, all things Beatles – and a number of bars and restaurants. For more Beatles, the Magical Mystery Tour leaves from the Albert Dock and takes fans to the famous sites of Strawberry Field and Penny Lane and ends at the Cavern Club. With the National Trust, you can even step inside Lennon and McCartney’s childhood homes. For even MORE of the Fab Four, head to the Magical Beatles Museum on Mathew Street to see over 300 pieces of Beatles related memorabilia.
For more music but less Beatles, you’ll want to wander over to the Pier Head and the British Music Experience that explores popular British Music from 1940 to present day.
Now, we mentioned historic buildings; they’re everywhere in Liverpool. But you’ll definitely want to add Liverpool Cathedral to your list. It’s Britain’s largest cathedral and a truly breath-taking place. If you can, book onto a tower tour and explore the highest vaults of the building – in summer you can catch the sunset from the tower.
Just hidden off Church Street is the Bluecoat; a contemporary arts centre that resides in a 300-year-old building, offering a programme of art, literature, music and dance. There’s also a lovely little garden outside and several local businesses there too.
Witness an engineering masterpiece that is the Mersey tunnels with Mersey Tunnel Tours, right beneath the depths of the Mersey River.
In Liverpool, we have more parks than Paris. Apart from being a bustling city, we have an amazing amount of green spaces. Sefton Park Palmhouse is the jewel in the crown of one of the city’s most-loved green spaces.
Across the water in Wirral is Port Sunlight Village, a beautiful chocolate box village, built in the 19th century solely for the workers at the Sunlight Soap factory workers. Step into Port Sunlight Museum to experience what it was like to live and work in the village.
Now, we've given you a lot to think about there!
