Maritime of My Life (Pt. 71) - Walking tour of Downtown St. John's, Newfoundland
July 10, 2017 - OK, let's check out this town! I love staying at a hotel that is walking distance to most major sights in a city; at the Duckworth Inn I'm no more than a kilometre away from most of what I've come to see.
Along my walk I check out Water Street, the oldest street in North America, some of the harbour, Harbourside Park, King's Beach, and its canine residents, the Newfoundland and Labrador (Retriever) breeds, the castle-like Supreme Court, and then up to City Hall and the Mile One Centre, before finishing at world-famous George Street, the largest conglomeration of bars and pubs (per capita) on a single street in all of North America.
St. John's is a city of extremes.

We recently took off for a weekend in St. John's Newfoundland. St. John's Newfoundland if you have not been there is one fun town. St. John's Newfoundland has it all, amazing nightlife, incomparable scenery, phenomenal restaurants and the friendliest people you'll ever meet. We visited the infamous George St., Petty Harbour, Quidi Vidi Brewery, Signal Hill and visited the beautiful little town Petty Harbour. Transatlantic Cruise St John's Newfoundland Canada 2019, we arrive in St John's Newfoundland on the Canadian east coast of Canada. Our Holland America Transatlantic cruise left Lisbon, Portugal to Boston USA, calling in Sao Miguel Island at Ponta Delgada then onto St John's Newfoundland Canada. We tour the town of St John's have lunch at Kellys Pub and try to buy wine for Tina at the Newfoundland Liquor Store, which was closed for Labour Day.
St John's Newfoundland is a beautiful city our Holland America Cruise Line ship Veendam tied up right in the city steps from the main city street of Water Street. We show you a store selling Cannabis with signs in the shop window since Canada legalized retail sales of Marijuana.
We were lucky to have a warm sunny September summer day in St John's and found wifi so we could connect with family and friends.

Saint John is the capital of New Brunswick and one of the biggest cities in Eastern Canada. It's a popular cruise port and during the summer Saint John is loaded with tourists.
One day in Saint John was all the time I had, but it wasn't enough. I hope to return to New Brunswick in the future and spend more time exploring this beautiful province.

St. John's is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is the oldest city in North America and is located on the Avalon Peninsula in the southeast corner of the island of Newfoundland. It lies 1'339 miles northeast of Toronto and is closer to Dublin than Vancouver. It is the most easternly urban settlement in North America and is just 3.5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.
St. John's has a public transit system of buses called Metrobus, that services nearly all of St. John's, the neighborhoods of Shea Heights, Kilbride and the Goulds, as well as the neighboring city of Mount Pearl. The service is $2.50 per use, and not per distance, making it a very cheap, affordable way of getting around town. Most, if not all, of the bus drivers are kind and courteous and are willing to give directions. Travelers can check routes and even the current position of any bus on the Metrobus online.
The Downtown core can be easily explored by foot. Take a stroll up Water Street, stop for a drink or take in some live music at a wide range of drinking establishments, and a wide range of restaurants as well as distinctive shopping. George Street, just above Water at the west end of the downtown core, near City Hall and the Convention Centre, is a concentration of nightclubs, taverns, restaurants that is typically busy any night of the week, with bar patrons spilling onto many patios and onto the street itself. Adjacent streets such as Duckworth Street also have interesting shopping and restaurants, and there are a number of (liquor-licensed) billiards halls.
St. John's has two modern shopping centers. The Avalon Mall, the largest shopping center in Newfoundland, has 140 stores and is on Kenmount Road. The Village Shopping Center is in the West End on Topsail Road. St. John's also have several big box centers; Stavanger Drive in the east end; Kelsey Drive (off Kenmount Road); and Pearlgate located in the suburb of Mount Pearl.
The town paints the steep slopes of a harbor that shelters hectares of green space, winding paths, rainbow row houses, artists, technocrats, and engineers – St John's is by far the most economically dynamic corner of Newfoundland; not coincidentally, it's also where you'll find the province's only university and ethnic enclaves. Signal Hill dominates the topography, while new restaurants, an active outdoors scene, and nights on the town dominate the social life.

The Village Shopping Center Tour - St. John's, NL Dead (Dying) Mall
This is my video tour of the Village Shopping Center, the other mall in St. John's, NFLD. This mall is located in the West End of town, on the intersection of Columbus Drive and Topsail Road. The mall has 86 store spaces with a total square footage of 450000sq.ft and parking for 2000 cars.
I forgot to mention in the video, this mall used to have a lovely looking fountain in front of where Sears used to be (Sportchek). The took it out in 2004 or 2005 or so because it used to leak a lot.
Here's a couple of adverts from 1997 for the mall, you can see the different stores that are no longer there and the fountain. The mall used to have a Marks and Spencer!
