Texas Our Heritage-HD.mp4
Texas Elementary School Uses Augmented Reality App to Create a Permanent Digital Learning Experience.
Budget cuts have resulted in fewer student field trips being funded. To combat this shortfall Heritage Elementary School in Highland Village, Texas, asked the Elm Fork Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists to create a permanent digital doorway to nature for its students utilizing a free downloadable, augmented reality app called Aurasma Lite.
With an investment of less than $50 the Master Naturalists created an 80ft interactive wall display that brings an engaging field trip-like experience to the children using smartphones and tablets. Adjacent to the displays, Heritage Elementary School also has a teaching garden representing the 10 ecological zones of Texas enhancing the link between the natural world and the digital world.
All the teaching assets created -- currently over 500 trigger images and videos -- are available in module format for free to anyone teaching about nature via the dedicated 'Texas Our Heritage' channels hosted on Aurasma.
The 'Texas Our Heritage' project demonstrates how teachers can embrace mobile learning devices to effectively engage students and enhance learning cost effectively. Unlike Virtual Reality (VR) that aims at replacing the perception of the world with an artificial one, Augmented Reality (AR) enhances a student's perception of their surrounding world. In the case of Heritage Elementary School, they turned affordable illustrated tourism maps about nature -- nine in all available from the Texas Parks and Wildlife at a cost of $25 -- into a series of exciting learning experiences.
Aurasma's cutting-edge image recognition technology allows smart devices to see, recognize and understand real-life images and objects in much the same way as the human brain does. With respect to the classroom teachers can seamlessly augment a scene -- textbook, poster, photo or even physical object -- with virtual content such as videos, animations and 3D objects called auras. No barcodes, visual tags or special glasses are required for Aurasma to work.
In the case of Heritage Elementary the students were given a mobile device -- iPhone or iPad2 -- to explore the wall displays. Typically each map featured 40-50 artist renditions of nature such as native plants, birds, animals or butterflies that via Aurasma was linked to a 30-60 second video that transported the children from the classroom directly to the coastline, plains, desert or mountains of Texas. The rich media content was sourced by the Master Naturalists for free from publicly available sites on the Internet such as Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Principal Toby M. Maxson comments: We recognize that classroom learning is not the same as an immersion in nature, but incorporating Aurasma has helped to make teaching the curriculum a richer experience for the students. They love the experience because they are actively involved in their own learning. We have noticed that AR facilitates interactions, appeals to kinesthetic learners, and offers engaging content for 21st Century learners.
This project received the first place exemplary project award from the Texas Master Naturalist Conference October 28th, 2012

Cherry Springs State Park
Cherry Springs State Park is a 106-acre (43 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Potter County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The park was created from land within the Susquehannock State Forest, and is on Pennsylvania Route 44 in West Branch Township. Cherry Springs, named for a large stand of Black Cherry trees in the park, is atop the dissected Allegheny Plateau at an elevation of 2,300 feet (701 m). It is popular with astronomers and stargazers for having some of the darkest night skies on the east coast of the United States, and was chosen by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and its Bureau of Parks as one of Twenty Must-See Pennsylvania State Parks.
The earliest recorded inhabitants of the area were the Susquehannocks, followed by the Seneca nation, who hunted there. The first settlement within the park was a log tavern built in 1818 along a trail; the trail became a turnpike by 1834 and a hotel replaced the tavern in 1874, then burned in 1897. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the old-growth forests were clearcut; the state forest was established in 1901 and contains second growth woodlands. Cherry Springs Scenic Drive was established in 1922, and the Civilian Conservation Corps built much of Cherry Springs State Park during the Great Depression, including a picnic pavilion listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). An annual Woodsmen's Show has been held in the park each August since 1952.

Our Lady of Guadalupe
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
