While hordes of tourists descend upon the very popular Capilano suspension bridge , locals in the know head over to the lesser known but equally as idyllic Cleveland Dam. In addition to trails and grassy areas for relaxing, it offers gorgeous views of the canyon, Grouse Mountain and the reservoir. It has all the usual amenities such as free parking, washrooms and dog friendly nature paths. It’s a great way to enjoy Vancouver’s north shore.

The dam created the Capilano reservoir in 1954, one of the main sources of water for Vancouver. It is named for Ernest Cleveland who was the first chief commissioner of the Greater Vancouver Water District

Cleveland Dam, built in 1954, blocks Capilano Lake which supplies fresh drinking water to the Lower Mainland. The Dam sits atop the Capilano River Regional Park. Capilano Lake and the peaks of the Lions provide a spectacular backdrop.
View an impressive spillway nearing 300 feet, holding back the 670-acre man-made Capilano Lake, which provides the wonderful, pure drinking water for much of the Greater Vancouver region. Capilano-Pacific Trail runs 5 miles (8 km) north from Ambleside Park to Capilano Lake.
