15 Things to do in Cusco Travel Guide
Many travelers to Cusco use the city as a launching pad to hike the Inca trail, visit Machu Picchu and/or explore the Sacred Valley. With so many travel options just outside of the city it is easy to forget that Cuzco has a lot to offer in and of itself. The following Cusco travel guide is our attempt to showcase what the city has to offer in terms of attractions, things to do, shopping, dining, museums and nightlife. In our opinion, you'll want to budget several days to take it all in and acclimatize to the higher altitude if you're thinking of going on hiking excursions afterwards.
Our visit Cusco travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Cusco city guide.
1) Cusco Cathedral (Viracocha) - Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin (Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus)
2) Inca Wall
3) Traditional Peruvian Folk Dance at Centro Qosqo
4) Barrio de San Blas Neighborhood
5) Artisan Market on Ave del Sol
6) Cusco Food (Alpaca meat skewers - alpaca a la parrilla
7) Pisco Museum (Museo del Pisco)
8) Plaza de Armas (Square of the warrior)
9) Inca Museum (Museo Inka)
10) Chocolate Museum (ChocoMuseo)
11) Temple of the Sun (Qurikancha)
12) Templo de la Compañía de Jesús (Jesuit Church)
13) Cuy - eating Guinea pig for dinner
14) El Templo de la Merced del Cusco
15) Nightlife in Cusco - drinking a pisco sour
Alternate Cuzco/Cusco spelling: (Quechua: Qusqu or Qosqo)
15 Things to do in Cusco, Peru | Top Attractions Travel Guide:
If you're planning to walk the Inca Trail or visit Machu Picchu, you'll likely end up spending at least a few days in Cuzco. With it's lively square, quirky museums, artisans markets and traditional performances, this is exactly the type of destination you'll want to linger in...plus let's not forget, it's also a good place to adjust to the altitude! The following video will showcase 15 things to do in Cuzco:
Cuzco Cathedral is a place you shouldn't miss. The cathedral sits on the site of Viracocha Inca’s palace, and it was also built using blocks from the nearby Inca site of Sacsaywamán. Inside you'll find impressive works of art done in the cuzqueña style.
In the evenings, you can go watch a traditional dance performance at Centro Qosqo.
San Blas
San Blas is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Cuzco and it is a great area to explore on foot. The neighbourhood is known for its bright blue doors and window shutters, and it has a nice little square with a church and a water fountain. The neighbourhood has some really cool lookout points with great panoramic views of Cuzco, so you'll want to bring your camera.
Plaza de Armas is the beating heart of Cuzco. The square is flanked by a Jesuit church and cathedral, and there are also plenty of bars, restaurants, and tour agencies around the perimeter. During the day you'll find locals and tourists hanging out in the square, and if you get lucky, you might just encounter a performance followed by a demonstration like we did.
The Inca Museum is one of the main museums in town and it has rooms dedicated to different periods of Inca and Spanish history. You can also see women weaving rugs and tapestries by hand in the central courtyard.
Qurikancha was an Inca temple built to the Sun God, Inti, and it is believed that the walls of this temple were once covered in sheets of gold. If the temple looks like it has various layers of construction, that's because when the Spaniards arrived, they demolished the original temple and used the foundations to build the Church of Santo Domingo on the site.
The Church of the Society of Jesus is a historic Jesuit church. It's worth a quick visit if you're in the area.
Templo de la Merced is another church located one block from Plaza de Armas, and it contains the tomb of two famous conquistadors.
And that's a wrap for Cuzco! We hope you enjoyed this video and that it showed you a few of the places you can visit while you're in the city. We recommend spending at least 3 days here, or perhaps a few more if you also want to tour the Sacred Valley. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do in Cuzco, feel free to share those in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people. All things Peruano. The best of Comida Peruana and Cocina Peruana.

HIKING UP RAINBOW MOUNTAIN IN PERU || Peru Travel Vlog 7
The rainbow mountains are without a doubt one of the most unique sights you can see in Peru! To get to them though you have to do a bit of hike which starts with you leaving Cusco at 2am, breakfast at the base at 5am and hiking from 6am. The hike itself isn't particularly hard - what makes this hike exceptionally difficult is the fact that you're at one of the highest altitude in the world and there's very little oxygen in the atmosphere. Having a guide to take you here and keep and eye on you is absolutely essential!
Sidebar: About halfway through, Yaya decided to get a horse to help finish the journey. The horse doesn't take you all the way, you still have to do a fair bit to do yourself. Lloyd and the others did the entire journey on foot! So, you know, if you struggle, speak to your guide about getting a horse - even if it's just to carry your heavy bags.
We did the tour with Flashpacker Connect who we highly recommend! (They even take extra oxygen for you - just in case you need it). See more about doing the hike to Rainbow Mountain with them here -

Altitude Sickness capital of the World! (Cuzco City Tour) - Cusco, Peru ????????
Situated in the Peruvian Andes is the mountainous town of Cusco. Can't catch your breath? The high elevation causes altitude sickness for most. Cusco is full of life and rich with culture, for many it serves as a gateway to the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu but it also has a lot to explore.

2:07 - Explore the beautiful city
3:13 - San Pedro market
3:44 - Night adventures and breathing at high altitude
4:24 - Altitude Sickness
Episode 27
Tired and exhausted, we dragged ourselves to airport and flew to Cusco. Once we arrived and started carrying our bags the first signs of altitude sickness were showing and we had to watch those signs closely, not over exerting ourselves.
Cusco is a stunning city is surrounded by the Andes Mountain Range and the size of the mountains makes the city of 500,000 feel more like a mountain village. With over 500 years of culture there are plenty of things to peak ones interest including markets, churches and ancient ruins nearby.
We set out to see the city at night and it started with Fil joining a dance with locals in a city square. We quickly found out that the Historical Center of town we were staying in is built on side of a mountain there is no flat ground, it is always stairs and that is a big factor as we were all experiencing altitude sickness.
After huffing and puffing our way back to the hostel we found the computer charger was fried no longer worked. This was a huge blow because it is needed everyday to transfer camera footage from multiple cameras. We went to sleep wondering if our Earth Unraveled Season 1 would end short.
Cusco, often spelled Cuzco ( Spanish ), is the capital of the Cusco Region and Cusco Province, located in southeastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. It is a fascinating city that was once the capital of the entire Inca Empire. For many tourists, it is the gateway if you are traveling to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley or any other Inca sites in the region. Layers of history can be seen from the spanish colonial buildings to the ruins surrounding Cusco such as Saksaywaman and Sacsayhuaman, the site of ancient battle involving the Inca. At 3,400m / 11,200 ft Cusco presents altitude sickness for the majority of people who live at a much lower elevation and it played a major role in our exploration.

Things to do in Cusco, Peru ???????? ATV tour of Maras Moray Salinas and self-guided hike downtown
There's no shortage of things to do in Cusco, so the Earth Unraveled team had some differing opinions on how to spend their final day in Cusco, Peru.
The great folks at Loki Travel were able to organize a last minute private tour for Mike & Mikey to see the Urubamba country side outside of Maras, Peru on a quad bike tour through. We also took the opportunity to skip a lot of the individual site walk-throughs and spend a lot more cruising the epic landscapes at full-speed on the ATVs.

0:54 - Maras statue
1:44 - so this is what an Inca fridge looked like
Episode 47
0:32 - The old Spanish church of Tiobamba was our first stop. This seemingly abandoned church seems very out of place in the vast open landscape and is easily spotted from miles away.
0:54 - Maras salt mines (Salinas des Maras) are a series of steam ponds which have been in use by locals to collect and sell salt since the Inca times. Since we had such a small group, we opted to take a few of the less conventional trails. Much more narrow than the regular paths these typically reserved for hikers and donkeys.
1:18 - The small town of Maras, where we stopped for a local brunch, ironically contained a statue displaying all of our destinations for the day.
1:44 - This ancient structure helped the ancient inca people preserve their foods such as corn and potatoes grown in Moray by keeping them cool and dry in these refrigerators made of clay and running cool running over the top.
2:01 - Back in Cusco: Fil, Peter, Kevin and Robbie organized their own day-tour with a self-guided walk through the streets, starting in the historic section of Cusco (plaza des Armas) but ultimately venturing way off the beaten path to see the real lives of these modern-day Inca people of Peru

The Sacred Humantay Lake (This Place is Paradise) |4k - Peru Vlog #4
Humantay Lake was a true beauty! I have never seen such a beautiful lake in my life.
Machu Picchu & Waynapicchu, Climb The Stairs of DEATH adrenaline RUSH (Part 2)
Machu Picchu and the death-defying hike and climb up Huayna Picchu (Wayna Picchu) by Adam, Angela, Eddie, Jackie, Jeremy, and Mateo. The gripping views and gripping of stairs on the steep climbs adds to our excitement. Karina and Max sacrifice their chance to summit this peak this time so that the others may conquer. sun up to after sundown. Pikachu's and rainbows at the end. it's not 4K but might as well be for the vivid views leave me speechless.
RAINBOW MOUNTAINS HIKE IN CUSCO PERU
The Rainbow mountains or Montania de Siete Colores in Peru are a few hours drive outside of Cusco, and it has a bit of a wild story.
As far as travel attractions go, it's brand new. You might ask how can a mountain be brand new? Well, it was covered with snow all year round until 2015. The climate has warmed enough to uncover the beautiful Rainbow underneath. There are several mountains there with these colours, and they say it matches the Cusco flag, which is also a rainbow.
It's hard to miss it when you walk through the town. It seems like every second tour shop offering hiking, has a Rainbow Mountain trek poster on the outside of the shop offering 1 day tours, 3 day tours, and everything in between.
We found a freelance guide through a friend. His name was Santos and we locked in a one day trip. That meant a 3am wake up, and a 3 hour drive to the trail head.
It's quite a hike to the top. It took us about 4 hours to reach the summit and we froze our asses off up there. It's well over 5000m above sea level, which is about double Machu Picchu and Cusco. I had never been at that altitude and you really feel it when you try to walk and talk.
Hey, it was all worth it though. It was a unbelievable thing to see, even if I have some mixed feelings about the whole climate change issue. It's not the Peruvians causing problems.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
