While visiting Clyde Butcher's Venice Gallery and Studio, his daughter, Jackie Butcher Obendorf, opened our eyes to the wonders of the Big Cypress Swamp in Ochopee, Florida. Worrying all the way, we will be walking in the swamp with gators, snakes and who knows what, on Christmas Eve, 2018.
Happy Holidays to you all, from your favorite Worrywarts, Linda and Irene.

Kissimmee Basin: The Northern Everglades
On January 13, 2012, the Everglades Headwaters National Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area in south-central Florida became the 556th unit of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge System. This area is key in conserving one of the last remaining grassland and longleaf pine savanna landscapes in eastern North America. The Everglades receives water from the Kissimmee River Valley, and it will benefit from the conservation and restoration of the headwaters with enhanced water quality, quantity and storage. Hiking Gator Hook Trail - Big Cypress - Loop Road
Just a few friends and I out slushing through the swamps of the Everglades. Pictures first then the video starts. This is the famous Gator Hook trail out on Loop Road in the Big Cypress preserve. We saw no gators! We saw some frogs and a couple baby rattlesnakes. That being said... I'm sure many gators laid eyes on us.

WTD #5. Big Cypress National Preserve & South Beach Miami
Welcome back to Wheeling to Dream! Episode 5 brings plenty of fun in the Everglades, as well as a family outing to South Beach, Miami, Florida.
We were lucky enough to get to watch an air show, right from South Beach! We got to see the Blue Angels, the Coast Guard, and many other aircraft perform. South Beach was pretty crowded, but we made the best of it.
We stayed in Midway Campground, right inside the Big Cypress National Preserve, right in the center of the Florida Everglades!
We did plenty of hiking, jeeping and wandering about through the swamp. #Swamp life! We saw tons of wildlife such as alligators! Some pretty large ones too!
Make sure to stay tuned in for our next episode in the Florida Keys!
We would love if you followed along with us on our journey!

The Ochopee Post Office, Florida | The Smallest Post Office in United States
The Ochopee Post Office is the smallest post office in the United States. A regular stop on the south Florida tourist circuit. The historical marker at the post office offers up its history. The original Ochopee post office, established in 1932, was housed in a general store. When fire destroyed the store in 1953, Postmaster Sidney H. Brown opened a temporary post office in an irrigation pipe shed on a tomato farm. But temporary became permanent, and the erstwhile pipe shed has been a post office ever since.
The 8-foot-by-7-foot tool shed on the edge of the Everglades National Park in Ochopee, Florida. In an era where hundreds of post offices have been closed to save money, this post office survives on more than cuteness. It does real work, handling the mail for more than 500 residents of the sparsely populated corner of Everglades City, Florida. The post office is currently fully functional, serving the surrounding populations of Miccosukee and Seminole Indians. The U.S. Postal Service rents the tiny building for a mere $25 per month. Last year the revenues were $28,000. Good things, philatelically speaking, come in small packages.
