Your initial reaction coming into the area is like lock your doors, be careful. But the minute you come up here, drive into the basement and you come up here it's just so like so inspiring, it completely blows you away.
6. Wide of rooftop taxi rank in Johannesburg's central business district
7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Laura Vercueil, spokeswoman, Johannesburg's Tourism Promotion Agency
I think a lot of the reluctance to perhaps to venture downtown has to do with perceptions of crime, and some of those are quite real at times. But also I think people need to see the great work that's being done and what the city administration is doing to clean up the city and make it as safe and more desirable place.

What contributes to its longevity I think is its ability to change. I think that is what has happened. I think people are accepting the change and trying to create the change and go with it, rather than trying to live in the past.
13. Close low shot of Klaas reading book
14. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jonathan Klaas, co-owner of the Collectors Treasury Books and Antique shop
There is an energy in Johannesburg, a definite energy which anybody who comes here can feel. Much more so than any other cities that are in South Africa, I feel. There's a certain urgency to get things done, and people are running around doing whatever they got to do. I think, I think that's what contributes to it, it's the fact that the vibe never stops.

I think there is this nice artistic flair in Braamfontein and people come here for that. I think people who do come to places like Neighbourgoods market see that is actually not as horrible as people make it out. And I think you need to come and explore it.

SCRIPT
There are those who say that Johannesburg is on the rise again, following decades where squatters turned abandoned buildings into high-rise slums.
Trendy clubs and restaurants are springing up, like the Randlords Club, a rooftop venue which opened in time for the World Cup in 2010. Club executive Margeaux Swartz

Ledger entries in Kentridge landscapes evoke long-forgotten mineworkers
A series of drawings by acclaimed artist William Kentridge, on pages of old cash books from East Rand Proprietary Mines dating back to the first decades of the last century, are causing a stir at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg.
A stark reminder of South Africa’s mining past, perhaps also the realities of our mining present, the stark black and white images of mining landcapes point a finger towards man’s insatiable hunger for minerals at any cost to ‘native’ and ‘coolie’ labourers who were paid very little to endure the horrors of getting the gold and other minerals out of the ground.
The journals were found by Kentridge covered in dust at the Collector’s Treasury in Johannesburg, the drawings from the East Rand and platinum belt were executed over a three year period.
Accompanying the exhibition is a book by Rosalind Morris, Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University, that looks at the vast webs already linking South Africa to other parts of Africa, China, the United States, and Australia a century ago.

100 Trillion Zimbabwe Dollars | Reserve Bank Zimbabwe | Zim Dollar 40 Cents
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has announced that the 100 Trillion Zimbabwe Dollar Notes are worth just 40 cents according to a news report out of Zimbabwe. I would never buy Zim Dollars, ever, and I know I have warned my listeners for over a year about this currency. Zimbabwe currency is a bad investment. It's not even an investment, it's a collectors item.
This statement about the 40 cents comes directly from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and not a secondary source. Many people still believe this is in country only, the fact is if you are in country, this is the exchange rate, if you are not in country, nobody will want your currency.
If you have any Zimbabwe Dollars, sell them on eBay as quick as you can before the news gets out that these notes are worth just 40 cents.
