Colliery (Dam) Park has been transformed from it's coal washing industrial birth in Nanaimo's early days, into one of Nanaimo's most beautiful and accessible parks. Minutes from downtown and walking distance from Vancouver Island University, biking, hiking, trout fishing, swimming or just using the off leash area for dog walks, the two man made lakes make this a popular park with visitors and locals.

Will we learn by our mistakes? Is it an outcome that is predetermined? Costs between zero and a lot of money? So many questions. So few answers.
The story unfolds as we approach the middle Colliery Dam remediation process. Thank you Leon Cake and Peter Urquhart for speaking on behalf of the people and the park.

Nanaimo to Remove Landmark Colliery Dam
NANAIMO -- A flood of mixed opinions is pouring in after city council approved a plan to remove the Lower and Middle Colliery Dams.
Last night city council approved the plans to start the deconstruction process of the two dams, after they were handed a study by city engineers that revealed the dams would likely overflow if a natural disaster hit the mid-island.
The dams were built in 1910 and 1911 and are one of the last landmarks tying back to Nanaimo's former mining industry. Many in harbour city say the dams act as a rare oasis in the heart of the busy city.
For years the dams have been used by fisherman, joggers and swimmers.
But the city says the neighbouring communities safety takes priority and are not waiting for a natural disaster to occur to see what would happen to the water running through the dams.
Today, they handed out information packets throughout the Harewood community advising residents of the city's plan. The packets included an evacuation route should the dams break before they are removed by next summer.
