Nesting loggerhead returns to the Gulf of Mexico
The Conservancy sea turtle team was monitoring Keewaydin Island as this loggerhead sea turtle came onto the beach to nest.
---DONATE to support our sea turtle work:
This particular turtle had been satellite tagged years ago and the team knew she was hanging out in the area for quite some time because they were getting pings from the satellite.
She finally came up to nest on south Keewaydin just after 5 AM one morning last week. Once she was done nesting, we removed the satellite tag, took some scute samples and gave her a flipper tag.
By 7 AM, she was on her way back to the Gulf of Mexico.

Coming of Age: Naples, Florida | Untold Stories
In the 1940s, Naples, Florida was little more than a bend in the road, a one stop-light town in the boondocks and barely on the map. Thirty years later, the backwater was a boomtown, and Naples was reputed to have more golf courses -- and millionaires -- per capita, than any other city in America.
The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. WGCU's Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities.

Keewaydin Island is a primary barrier island located off the coast of Naples, in Collier County, Florida, United States. Keewaydin Island is monitored nightly for Loggerhead turtle nesting activity by The Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
Keeywadin's Public Beach
The Keewaydin Island shoreline has been mapped annually since 1997 in an effort to document shoreline change. The shoreline is also mapped after significant storm events. Mapping is done by collecting Global Positioning System locations along the dune-line and then downloaded using Geographic information system software.
Keewaydin Island was once a part of the Keewaydin Camps Ltd. corporation. Originally, the island was named Key Island, and once the Keewaydin Camps had a presence here, it became known as Keewaydin Island. The island is currently about 85% public property and 15% private. Approximately 50 private lots and 15 private homes dot the island, mostly on the south side of the island.
Keewaydin Island is a unique barrier island in Florida that has no cars, roads, or bridges. It had a history of being the next developable barrier island, after Marco Island to the south was developed in the 50's and 60's and onward. During the late 50's and early 60's when the government was planning a road and bridge out to the island, 1,000 local residents signed a petition to stop the road and any future commercial development. They wanted to avoid the pattern on barrier islands at the time, such as Fort Myers Beach, where local residents were 85% against dense development, but zoning laws and large property owners held sway. In fact, high density high rise structures line the shores on most barrier islands in Florida, except notable places like Keewaydin, where the environmentalist movement finally got enough momentum to stop the bridge to the island. So locals and visitors can relish the experience of a visit to a pristine barrier island and its ecosystem. Wildlife abounds and the island protects one of the largest and most important reserves called Rookery Bay.
Most commonly known for the south tip of the island, where local boaters congregate at the end of the 8 mile long isthmus, where they can park their boat on the shore and enjoy people watching and the beach and scenery. Since you can't drive to the Island, you will have to rent a boat, go on a tourist boat, visit with a private individual who has a boat, or call the Keewaydin Express water taxi service.

Alligator Amblers Hike Sabal Palm Trail in Naples, FL.
Picayune Strand State Forest is deep in the heart of Big Cypress Basin in Florida. Several trails are available for hiking and biking like the Sabal Palm Trail. What an amazing ecosystem with scenic trails.
During the summer months this forest is underwater, so if you don't want to go slogging through swampland, you may want to visit Naples during the dry season which is December thru March.
The Sabal Palm Trail will take you through pine flatwoods, wet prairies, lowlands, cypress strands, slash pines, and subtropical hammocks in the higher ground.
We hiked with the Florida Trail Association's Alligator Amblers chapter of Fort Myers, FL. They have a variety of activities for their members such as hiking, kayaking, biking as well as weekend getaways. This chapter assists with maintenance of the Florida Trail's southern most section in the Big Cypress National Preserve.
