Calgary’s newest public art – not your traditional monument
Calgary’s newest public artwork titled Wolfe and the Sparrows will be installed on May 7 and 8 at the southwest corner of the new 12 Street Bridge in Inglewood. Canadian artist and professor of sculpture, Brandon Vickerd, hopes the work will encourage Calgarians to consider and reflect on how bronze monuments celebrate figures from our past.
Wolfe and the Sparrows is a cast bronze sculpture, inspired by an existing statue of General James Wolfe, sculpted by John Massey Rhind in 1898. General Wolfe was a British army general who led the British army to victory over the French during the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. The original sculpture was gifted to The City of Calgary by Glenbow Museum founder, Eric Harvie, and now stands in a park in the community of Mount Royal.
Wolfe and the Sparrows may first appear to be a traditional monument, cast in bronze and raised on a pedestal. But as you move closer, a flock of sparrows–a bird species native to England, Wolfe’s place of birth–explodes from the figure, distorting Wolfe’s head and shoulders.
“This sculpture doesn’t celebrate a historical figure; it is transformative,” says Vickerd. “My responsibilities to the public are not to simply parachute something into a community without considering the socio-political, economic and cultural institutions already at play. As an artist, I see my role as engaging people in a conversation and introducing new ideas and concepts.”
The piece was fabricated in Calgary by BronzArt Casting Ltd.
“Brandon has created a truly original and unique sculpture,” says Vaughn Stewart of BronzArt Casting Ltd. “Due to its uniqueness, there were some highly challenging fabrication aspects for the foundry. By working hand-in-hand with Brandon, we were able to bring his vision to life.”
A project-specific public art selection panel chose artist Brandon Vickerd for this project. The concept for Wolfe and the Sparrows is the result of numerous conversations and exchanges with the citizens from surrounding communities, a process that was essential to the development of the artwork.
“From the get-go, the opportunity to work with the community to make a piece of public art that came from conversations with the people who were going to see it every day is what really drew me to this project,” says Vickerd.
The artist was allocated $220,000 to design, build and install the public art piece. This funding comes from the 12 Street Bridge $26 million capital budget.
The City of Calgary is currently developing a new public art process and will present a new direction for the program in 2020. Wolfe and the Sparrows is one of the remaining pieces that were underway before City Council directed a suspension of all new capital public art projects. Calgarians will see three additional projects completed in 2019 as part of the previous program.

If you've ever been to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, toured the national historic site in Baden or attended the Stratford Festival, you've probably already seen the work of Ontario artist Ruth Abernethy. Often larger than life-sized and cast in bronze, her sculptures are stunning and hard to miss. She joins The Agenda to discuss her book, Life and Bronze, A Sculptor's Journal, a reflection on her work.

Ice Castle Review Edmonton, Canada 2020 - Google Local Guide
We visited on a warm January night at sunset. It was nice to see it in day light, sunset , and then the castle's lights under the large moon. When visiting the #icecastle #yeg, confirm that it is open, if it is very cold. This week it's -41 windchill, so it's closed all week. Pay for your tickets online and book a time to avoid lines. Adults will need to sign a waver at a window. Once arriving, keep all food and drink in the car. Outhouses are at front entrance. Wear ski pants for the slides & gloves with a small hole cut into an index finger to operate your phone camera without freezing your whole hand. Pull kids on a sled and bring them a helmet. Dress for 10 degrees colder than it is. We took an hour to visit everything. The floor is 3 inches chopped ice and sand. It is not slippery, but boots are needed. A wheelchair would have difficulty plowing the terrain. Everyone is friendly and takes turns with good manners at the Instagramable features. I brought props: mirror for reflections, a Canadian flag, & battery powered lights. Without hand-held lights, your subject will only be a silhouette in front of the ever-changing walls. The ice protects visitors from the wind and the caves are warm. The maze has narrow passages that makes for hearty laughs when you are forced to pass people. The waterfall and ice sculptures are a romantic place to pop the question or take engagement photos. This is it's 5th year and the only Canadian location. Hawrelak Park has some construction around it this year. I recommend coming from the north and turning right into the park. Parking is plentiful. The tour ends with mini donuts. I also think researching the castle ahead of time and arming yourself with trivia would make for fun conversation with strangers. I found the experience overwhelming with beauty, light, and music. I overheard many Elsa and Narnia jokes. My favorite photo was of the family carrying sleeping children out. I can only imagine how many times they went on the 4 slides! #googlelocalguide #connectlive Crazy Chick #2 Please follow. It doesn't say Do Not Touch, so I think a visually impaired person could feel the icicles and structure. The music isn't over-powering, people seem quiet. There is the odd joyful shriek for a child on a slide. People with autism probably wouldn't find it too noisy or too bright. It was quieter than a mall. The elderly would definitely find it too difficult to manage with a cane or walker. I did not see a service dog, but I'm sure that they would be welcome. This is definitely where I will take my visitors, especially if they are from a warm country.

Ottawa is the capital city of Canada. It stands on the south bank of the Ottawa River in the eastern portion of southern Ontario. Ottawa borders Gatineau, Quebec; the two form the core of the Ottawa–Gatineau census metropolitan area (CMA) and the National Capital Region (NCR). As of 2016, Ottawa had a city population of 964,743 and a metropolitan population of 1,323,783 making it the fourth-largest city and the fifth-largest CMA in Canada.
Ottawa é a capital e quarta maior cidade do Canadá.

Ottawa highlights:
Parliament Buildings
Like their counterpart in London, the Parliament Buildings are an imposing neo-Gothic pile restored from the ruins left after a devastating fire in 1916. They dominate the Ottawa River from a bluff somewhat exaggeratedly known as Parliament Hill. As a counterpart to Westminster’s Big Ben, the 92m (302ft) Peace Tower, with clocks on all four sides and a 53-bell carillon, was built in front of the central building as a monument to those killed in World War I. Take the lift to the observation deck for a fine view of the city, the Gatineau Hills and the Ottawa River.

The National Gallery of Canada is the creation of architect Moshe Safdie, also known for his Habitat homes in Montréal. It is worth spending at least half a day at the gallery, which houses the country’s best European collections. The airy glass-and-steel construction brings natural daylight flooding into the spectacular Great Hall and all the galleries. The terrace of the main restaurant faces Nepean Point Park, while the windows of a less formal restaurant look out over the Ottawa River.

I was at the Daniel Faria Gallery and during my visit outside of the gallery I met with Clint Roenisch who own another gallery right next door and during our conversation, I learned about the Robert Kananaj Gallery and so I was curious and decided to visit since it was just a few stores away down the street.
