Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures - Snorkel with Manta Rays on our Night Dive Experience
Manta Ray Night snorkel is something that you will always remember. You need not much experience as snorkelers in order to observe the mantas in their own habitat. For the best Manta Ray Night Snorkel give us a call 808-987-1584. This experience of Manta Ray Night Snorkel or Dive is rated as one of the top 10 dives in the world; it is often described as “surreal”.
We provide all the gear that you require. Snorkel, Mask, Fins, Wetsuit, Dive light as well, as a “custom light board with the brightest lights” for everyone to hold onto. Our swim guide will be right with you in the water to assist you if you have any issues with your gear or fear. She will prepare you when the mantas are coming up close to so you are able to have them come within 1 foot of your face. If you get cold, she will bring you back to the boat before the others are finished.
Our Manta Rays are very comfortable with snorkelers or divers in the water. This activity has been going on since the late 1970’s and they know that we will never harm them. Therefore, we get one of the greatest exposures to wild marine life possible and it’s totally safe.
Manta Ray Experience (Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures)
Night snorkel experience with Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures ( and beautiful photography from Ocean Wings Hawaii ( in Kona, HI on August 21, 2013.
No copyright infringement intended. Footage purchased from Mantarayshawaii.com
This tour is a MUST for anyone who goes to the Big Island. It's incredibly surreal to experience being within inches of one of the ocean's most elusive and least-known animals, and being totally safe.
This does take place at night about 30 minutes after sunset, in open ocean off the coast of Kona, directly off the coast of the Kona International Airport (yes, we could see and hear planes taking off and landing), at a site called Manta Heaven, known for being a popular feeding spot for Manta.
The photographers, Jim and Martina Wing, are not just world-renown underwater photographers, they have also been studying and photographing the Manta for 35 years; they are essentially the world's experts on Manta because they've been doing this work for so long. They keep nightly records of all the Manta seen in both the North and South sites off the coast of Kona. Over 200 Manta have been identified, and Martina makes both monthly and yearly statistics (all available on their website) of the Manta's movements and habits.
Our tour operator, Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures, is Standards Compliant, meaning they've agreed contractually to a set of standards and rules outlined for the protection of the Manta and the safety of everyone involved. They go out with a maximum of 6 guests per night plus an in-water guide and go over extensive safety rules before entering the water. Some companies take 20+ per night but the experience with Karl and Jessica was very focused and made the night very enjoyable.
If you have the opportunity, DO THIS TOUR, with Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures coming highly recommended from me.
Manta Ray snorkeling aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona Hawaii Big Island
#mantarays #snorkeling #bigisland We took a snorkeling cruise aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. The crew was very nice and professional. The boat was very nice. It appeared new and clean. The manta rays are attracted to the plankton, which are attracted to the lights, so all the cruises have snorkelers hang onto surfboards with handles affixed, and use pool noodles to support their feet and keep them level with the water. The manta rays were super cool! And as they feed at night, the only way to see or experience them is to book a tour like this.

Snorkel tour around Kikaua Beach reef near Kona, Hawaii
Couple minutes of just snorkeling around Kikaua Beach reef, out past the inner cove where the water clears up. Some Palani, Uhus, goatfish, nice school of manini and other fish. Nice looking reef, usually with some honu and monk seals nearby.
Kikaua Beach is between Kua Bay and Kuki'o Bay, north of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Shot handheld with an Oregon Scientific ATC 9K hd camera.

HAWAII - The Big Island ???? | cinematic travel video with ziplining snorkeling hula dancing
A cinematic travel adventure video with ziplining, snorkeling and hula dancing of our trip to the Big Island also known as Hawaii.
We started on the green, tropical Hilo side of the island. The jungle there was amazing! We visited Akaka Falls and some local neighborhood waterfalls and beaches as well. Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens was like a scene out of the film Avatar with its unique, exotic tropical plants. And ziplining with Skyline Eco Adventures high over a 250 foot waterfall was absolutely breathtaking! As was our volcanoes helicopter ride with Safari Helicopters.

On our way to the Kona side of the island we visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Nahuku lava tube was cool, and the surrounding forest was beautiful. We were also able to witness the sheer size of the caldera at Kilauea volcano. We stopped by Punalu'u black sand beach, where we saw a green sea turtle resting on the shore.
One the Kona side of the island we stayed at the Aloha Guest House in Captain Cook. The Kona area is made for ocean activities. Our favorite snorkel spots were Honaunau and Kealakekua bays, the latter requiring either a 4 mile hike or a boat ride to reach. We also really enjoyed the performance at the Island Breeze Luau, with great hula and other Polynesian dances. If you love chocolate, you should visit one of the only places in the United States that grows and produces it locally at the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory. And you absolutely must do a snorkel at night with manta rays with Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures! It's an incredible experience to have giant manta rays brush up against you while they feed on plankton.
Footage includes ziplining with Skyline Eco Adventures ( a volcano helicopter tour by Safari Helicopters ( Akaka Falls, Hilo Farmers Market, Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory ( Island Breeze Luau hula dancers ( multiple snorkeling spots including Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau Bay, Punalu‘u black sand beach, the walk to Nahuku / Thurston Lava Tube at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a lava crater eruption, and a manta ray night snorkel with Coral Reef Snorkel Adventures (

2 Step Beach Snorkeling, Big Island, Hawaii
2 Step Snorkeling location in the Kona region of the Big Island, Hawaii. 2 step refers to the rock steps used to get into the ocean. On the day I went the weather was pretty good and the water was clear. It is rocky when getting in and no sand, so if you have water shoes that is better or just wear your fins early.
There were a number of tourists and divers with everyone getting in and out in the same location, which created a traffic jam.
I snorkeled in a number of locations on the island and this location is unique in that the water is very deep with coral all around.

10. The Great Barrier Reef
Located in Australian waters, this is not only the largest, but also the most well-known one. It has around three thousand individual reef systems in it, and is about the same size as Japan. In case you were wondering, yes, it can be seen from outer space. The reef is estimated to be up to two million years old. This stunning reef is located near the Australian state of Queensland, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The reef attracts over two million visitors each year.
9. Belize barrier reef
This coral reef, too, is a world heritage site. It’s 190 miles long and occupies an area of 370 square miles. It has over a hundred different coral species, and around 500 species of fish. The Belize barrier reef is located off the coast of Belize, as close as a thousand feet in some places. It is a major tourist attraction, and attracts as many as half the 260,000 yearly visitors – who go scuba diving and snorkeling to see the colorful corals. Unfortunately, due to uncertain reasons, a large portion of the reef’s corals are damaged, and protection efforts are being initiated to reverse – or at least control the damage.
8. New Caledonia barrier reef
Located off the north-east coast of Australia, the New Caledonia barrier reef is named after its structure – which is roughly parallel to the seashore, and is separated from it by deep water. It’s the second-longest reef in the world, with a length of 930 miles. That’s half as long as Japan!
The reef has the world’s most diverse structure, with 146 different types of corals in it. In terms of coral and fish diversity, the New Caledonian barrier reef at least equals – and possibly surpasses – the Great Barrier Reef.
7. Fiji’s Rainbow reef
This coral reef lies between two Fijian islands, and comprises 230 varieties of coral and almost 1200 fish species. The creatures found here are truly gorgeous, from the electric blue ribbon eels, to beautiful carpet anemones, majestic lionfish and stunning coral varieties such as the staghorn.
The Rainbow Reef is famous worldwide for The Great White Wall, a dive location considered by divers to be one of the best.
6. The Maldives coral reef
Made up of 1200 small islands and blessed with wonderful weather year-round, the Maldives have often been described as heavenly. From majestic manta rays to the adorable butterfly fish, the waters are teeming with fauna you can’t take your eyes off. Pretty though the fish are, they’re nothing compared to the corals. The cup corals, brain corals and whip corals are just a few of the wonderful varieties found in these islands.
5. Tubbataha reefs natural park
Located in the Phillippines, this reef is considered one of the best diving sites in the world. The reefs are pristine and colorful, with 360 species of coral in them, and 600 species of fish. In addition, they have sharks, dolphins, whales, and beautiful birds.
The dive season at the reef extends from mid-March to mid-June, when the weather is mild and the seas are calm.
4. Red sea coral reef
This reef is located in the Red Sea as the name suggests, off the coasts of Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia. The flora and fauna found here is unique, with ten percent of the creatures being found nowhere else in the world. The reef is estimated to be thousands of years old, and is home to 1200 different species.
3. Florida Keys reef
The Florida Keys reef is the only living barrier reef in North America. It’s 700 miles long, and houses 65 coral varieties and over 500 species of fish. Fish species such as the French angelfish, Blue and Queen parrotfish, goatfish, Queen triggerfish and many others can also be found here.
2. Coral reefs in Lakshadweep
Situated in the Indian ocean, the Lakshadweep islands are surrounded by coral reefs of astounding beauty. The pleasant weather, local birds, coconut trees, pristine sand, and the vibrant coral make for a truly winning combination.
1. Hawaiian coral reef
Located near the US islands of Hawaii, this coral reef is home to many varieties of fish and other marine life forms. While the list of the varieties may not be long, they’re interesting all the same as almost a quarter of them are endemic to the islands. Whether the blue rice coral, rice coral or the finger coral, they’re all marvels of nature. Did you know that one of the biggest threats to corals is suntan lotion? It protects your skin, but chemicals like oxybenzone which are found in most lotions can get absorbed by corals and lead to bleaching. Because of this, places like Hawaii have outright banned certain sunscreen ingredients.

Eel Attack Hawaii
This video shows you exactly what not to do if you see an eel while snorkeling or scuba diving. This was a pretty large eel probably around 4-5 feet long. I wanted to get some cool close up shots so I pestered the eel a lot and fed it some squid. Clearly I didn't give the eel enough space because eventually he came out and chased me up to the surface and along the surface for a while. He chomped the end of my fin and I had to kick him in the face to get him to stop following me. Obviously I recognize that I was pretty stupid for doing all of this. As long as you give eels their space you shouldn't have an issue. The video was taken while snorkeling in the morning in Kealakekua Bay Hawaii.

WTD #6. Snorkeling Florida Coral Reef/ Christ of the Abyss / Florida Keys Snorkeling
Who doesn't love relaxing Key West? This week our RV family adventures took us snorkeling John Pennekamp coral reef on a snorkeling tour in Key Largo, Florida. The Christ of the abyss in key largo was really awesome to see.
From there we headed out to Key West, Florida. On our way down we stopped at Bahia Honda State Park. Down in Key West, we visited Fort Zachary Taylor state park. We rented a charter boat and captain and went out to the only coral reef in the US.
Florida coral reef snorkeling is unbelievable so if you have a chance definitely take it.
