As you can see it guards the gap between the south of Purbeck, where Purbeck marble was once quarried, and the rest of England. Nothing could pass in or out without going past the Castle.

A stone wall was built around the hill top, creating an inner ward or enclosure. There were two further enclosures: one to the west, and one that extended south ( the outer bailey ) in contrast to the inner bailey, these were surrounded by palisades made from timber. At the time the vast majority of castles in England were built using earth and timber, and it was not until the 12th century that many began to be rebuilt in stone. The Domesday Book records one castle in Dorset; the entry, which reads Of the manor of Kingston the King has one hide on which he built Wareham castle, is thought to refer to Corfe rather than the timber castle at Wareham. There are 48 castles directly mentioned in the Domesday Book, although not all those in existence at the time were recorded. Assuming that Corfe is the castle in question, it is one of four the Domesday Book attributes to William the Conqueror; the survey explicitly mentions seven people as having built castles, of which William was the most prolific.
In the 1980's, Ralph Bankes bequeathed the entire Bankes estate to the National Trust, including Corfe Castle, much of the village of Corfe, the family home at Kingston Lacy, and substantial property and land holdings elsewhere in the area. In the summer 2006, the dangerous condition of the keep caused it to be closed to visitors, who could only visit the walls and inner bailey. The National Trust undertook an extensive conservation project on the castle, and the keep was re-opened to visitors in 2008, and the work completed the following year.

Fire breaks out near historic Corfe Castle forcing students to abandon field trip. Another fire has broken out in the British countryside- this time forcing a group of A-level geography students to abandon their field trip to a castle today after a large heath fire broke out.
The blaze is thought to have erupted after some controlled burning by a railway embankment got out of hand- with smoke seen billowing from the hillside.

Stepping back in time to 1900 at Blists Hill Victorian Town - a fantastic open air museum that's great for families, one of a group of 10 museums in Ironbridge Gorge, near Telford in Shropshire. The heart of Victorian Britain, with mines, tile works and iron foundries, it has been recreated with a high street (including a sweet shop and working print shop), its own Victorian style pre-decimal money to spend, and houses to visit. One of my own childhood favourites, I visited with my six-year-old to discover it's as good as I remembered - and the staff there are full of fascinating facts as ever. Visit for more information.

Immediately after landing in England in 1066 William of Normandy ordered three fortifications to be built, Pevensey Castle in September 1066, Hastings (before the Battle of Hastings) and Dover. Hastings Castle was originally built as a motte-and-bailey castle near the sea. Later that year the famous Battle of Hastings took place near the Hastings castle, in which William was victorious. In 1070 William issued orders for the Castle to be rebuilt in stone, along with the St Mary's Chapel.
The Count of Eu held the castle for most of the Norman period, beginning with Robert, but King John ordered that the castle be destroyed to prevent it falling into the hands of the Dauphin Louis. In 1220, Henry III re-fortified the castle.
In time however, the house of Eu forfeited control of Hastings Castle when the family heir William, made the decision to keep his French assets over the English ones and was denied the right to his inheritance. In 1242 Henry III bestowed rule of the castle and its lands to his wife’s uncle Peter of Savoy whom then governed the estate until passing away.[1]
In 1287 violent storms battered the south coast for many months and the soft sandstone cliffs eventually succumbed to the elements. Large sections of the face fell into the sea along with parts of the castle.
In 1339 and 1377, the town was attacked by the French leaving many burnt buildings which included homes. Throughout the next century erosion was unchecked and gradually more of the castle was lost to the sea.
The mid 16th century saw the castle receive another blow as Henry VIII commissioned that all Catholic monasteries were to be destroyed and this left the site in decay for many years. The site was purchased by Thomas Pelham on June 23, 1591.[2] After that the site was purchased by the Pelham family and used for farming until the ruins had become so overgrown they were lost from memory.
During World War II, the castle received more damage as Hastings was a target for bombing raids. In 1951 the Hastings Corporation purchased the site and converted it into a tourist attraction.
