Yamato Colony, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens
This video presents an overview of the history of the Yamato Colony in the Boca Raton and Delray Beach areas of Florida. The history begins in 1903 when Jo Sakai first came to the area to explore the idea of establishing a Japanese agricultural community in Southeast Florida. The video is based on the exhibit housed in the Yamato-Kan, on Yamato Island at the Morikami Museum and Gardens. The exhibit traces the history from 1903 until World War II. The video ends with the dedication plague to George Morikami, who donated his land,, upon which the museum exists today, to West Palm Beach County to establish a living memorial to the Japanese colony and Japanese culture. The Yamato-kan, designed as Japanese villa, opened in 1977. Other parts of the museum and gardens opened at later dates. As much as possible of the complex history of the Yamato Colony is squeezed into this 15-minute film, which was videoed on site. (Much more information about the colony and its triumphs and struggles is chronicled in the extensive literature available through the education center and archives at the museum.) Note the wedding photo shown in the video was stated to be that of Jo and Sada Sakai based on a caption above the photo. Upon examination, the photo is of a ceremony later that their marriage and is likely from Oscar and Suye Kobayashi's wedding in Japan in the early 1920s. The photo nearby in the exhibit of a woman wearing a kimono and western style dress is likely Suye Kobayashi based on signage at the exhibit, though another source identifies the woman as Yetsue, the wife of Henry Kamiya.
