Edinburgh, United Kingdom - At a glance
Edinburgh is a feast of knockout views and dark alleyways, winding wynds and grand Georgian squares. Scotland’s capital city is cosmopolitan and classical, Glasgow's more elegant little sister. Cobbled streets and charming open spaces, views of the freezing Forth of Firth popping up into sight between rows of granite-grey tenements, Edinburgh ticks so many boxes. The geography is breathtaking; the city centre ringed by its primeval landscape, volcanic Arthur’s seat, the jagged Salisbury Crags and imposing Calton Hill. The sense of history is palpable, as the great Castle hangs heavy on the horizon and the Scott monument casts a spiky silhouette above Princes Street. It’s jam-packed with listed buildings, museums and galleries lining every street. But there's another side to Auld Reekie as well, a contemporary, forward-thinking energy. The tartan has been discarded and in its place is a shiny bright city. In art and architecture, food and theatre, Edinburgh excels. Think of the glisteningly brazen, notoriously over-budget Scottish Parliament or the docks in Leith with their industrial buildings and warehouses being transformed into sleek restaurants and buzzing bars. The city is pocket-sized but packs a big punch, perfect for a weekend jaunt. For those are traveling to Scotland, here is Edinburgh at a glance...
