For doing all this we rented a car and drive through the region for about 10 days with activities booked a few weeks ahead.
You can use this guide to prepare and plan your own trip to this region, therefore I included all Spots and companies we used along the way.

Shakaland Zulu Cultural Day Tour from Durban
Country and Coastal Touring are tour operators and guides based int he city of Durban, South Africa. We offer a range of different day tours from Durban including Zulu cultural tours.
About 90 north of Durban lies the oldest European town in Zululand, the town of Eshowe. Nearby the town is KwaBulawayo where King Shaka began his rule.
Just past Eshowe lies Shakaland. Shakaland was originally a film set created for the 1980's TV production, Shaka Zulu. Once filming was complete the entire Zulu village was handed to the local community to run as a tourist destination.
The Zulu people are the largest indigenous group in South Africa and still practice their traditions and customs. Shakaland has become one of the best (if not the best) sites in South Africa to learn more about these proud people.
On a Shakaland day tour from Durban, visitors will get to learn more about the Zulu people, their history, traditions and cultures. They'll get to learn more about the roles the chiefs, Sangomas and Inyangas perform.
Shakaland also puts on what is in our estimation, the best Zulu dance show in South Africa. Not only is Zulu dancing celebrated, but the dances of other African cultures is performed. There is also traditional artwork and beadwork for sale.
Lunch is a buffet where guests can not only enjoy roast and veg, but can try local South African favorites such as samp and beans.
If you're traveling to South Africa and want to experience the best in Zulu culture then book a tour to Shakaland with us.

The Golden Mile The Golden Mile, the nickname for the beaches near downtown that stretch along the Indian Ocean, is well known for it's excellent surfing, occasional shark attack and wide sandy beaches. Visiting around the Christmas holidays ensures a crowded experience, complete with stations for missing children, but visit at the off season and you'll practically have the place to yourself, save the serious surfers. There are also play pools and playgrounds for children along the waterfront, as well as hotel, bars and restaurants.
Crocodile Creek. In the ‘sugar town’ of Tongaat (just a few miles past Umhlanga) you will find Crocodile Creek, on the Tongaat river in sub-tropical bush. Exploring SOUTH AFRICA 2017 | Cape Town, Durban, Drakensberg, Sun City + more!
We spent 5 weeks exploring beautiful South Africa, visiting many beaches, hiking and seeing some of the most breathtaking sights in Drakensberg and Table Mountain of Cape Town, spending quality time with family, and much more.
After starting in Sun City for a week, we flew back to Durban, from where we drove down to where we would be staying for the next two weeks, Mtwalume. In the middle of our stay in Mtwalume, we drove to the amazing Drakensberg mountain range where we went on many amazing hikes. After our short stay there, we returned to Mtwalume where we continued our ventures out to nearby destinations and also spent time with family over the Christmas period. After Mtwalume, it was time to take on the Garden Route (N2), a very scenic drive all the way down to Cape Town. Our night stops on the way to Cape Town included East London, Port Elizabeth, Knysna and Somerset West before arriving in Cape Town on New Years Eve. Easily the highlight of the popular bustling Cape Town was the breathtaking 4.5 hour hike up to the top of Table Mountain via the Skeleton Gorge trail.
Being vegan in South Africa was relatively easy given that most of the time there we were in a rental unit with a kitchen. Eating out was sometimes challenging, however in Cape Town this was not a problem :)

Car terminal[edit]
Durban Car Terminal opened in 1998, with a capacity of 60,000 vehicles a year. In 2004 a 100-million-Rand expansion brought the number of bays to 6,500. This included a 380m bridge linking the terminal to the quayside, improving vessel turnaround time and improving security.
Cruise terminal[edit]
MSC Cruises bases the MSC Sinfonia in Durban from November to April every year. From the 2018/2019 Southern Africa cruise season MSC Cruises will be basing the much larger and newer MSC Musica in Durban.[3] Many other cruise ships pass through Durban every year, including some of the worlds biggest, such as the RMS Queen Mary 2. The tender to build the R200 million Durban Cruise Terminal was awarded to KwaZulu Cruise Terminal (Pty) Ltd which is 70% owned by MSC Cruises SA and 30% by Africa Armada Consortium. The terminal will be able to accommodate 2 cruise ships at any given time.[4]
Naval facilities[edit]
Naval Base Durban, situated on Salisbury Island, is part of the Port of Durban. Established during the Second World War, it was downgraded to a naval station in 2002. In 2012 a decision was made to renovate and expand the facilities back up to a full naval base to accommodate the South African Navy's offshore patrol flotilla.[5][6] In December 2015 it was redesignated a naval base. It is the home port of three Warrior-class interim offshore patrol vessels (formerly missile-armed fast attack craft) which will be replaced by a new patrol flotilla within four to five years.[7]
