COZUMEL SNORKELING TIPS & Creepy Animals
Best snorkeling from the shore in Cozumel Mexico. After spending $40 on snorkel boat tours, A local told me that a place called Playa Corona was much better. You could snorkel from the beach and it was free. That was once true. After hurricane Wilma, the coral reef near the shore is gone there as well as the nearby Sky Reef. I’m not sure if the wave action crushed the reef to a pulp or if Wilma just buried it with sand. Probably both. The deeper reefs away from the shore are still intact and thriving well. You can take several snorkeling tours that will guide you. The best snorkeling form the shore we found was at El Presidente Resort and Spa. For three nights we stayed right on the crystal clear turquoise waters and lounged in the many palapas, bungalows, pools and hot tubs. Ocean sunset dinners were spectacular and The food was so fresh it was practically crawling off your plate. We ended up snorkeling from the beach there the entire rest of our vacation exploring a couple small coral outcroppings and the sunken barge thingie. You can rent snorkel gear at El Presidente and The staff was extremely friendly.

COZUMEL, EL CIELO COZUMEL, SNORKELING TOUR COZUMEL MEXICO, MEXICAN BEACH, EL CIELO SAND BAR
COZUMEL, EL CIELO COZUMEL, SNORKELING TOUR COZUMEL MEXICO, MEXICAN BEACH, 2019, Cozumel, a mostly undeveloped Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, is a popular cruise ship port of call famed for its scuba diving. At Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, there's diving spots around a section of the Mesoamerican Reef and the Museo Subacuático de Arte’s submerged sculptures. Chankanaab is an eco park surrounding a lagoon with underwater caverns, home to dolphins, manatees and sea turtles. The economy of Cozumel is based on tourism, with visitors able to benefit from the island's balnearios, scuba diving, and snorkeling. The main town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel. Cozumel has tropical savanna climate under the Köppen climate classification that closely borders on a tropical monsoon climate.[11] The dry season is short, from February to April, but even in these months precipitation is observed, averaging about 45 millimetres (1.8 in) of rain per month. The wet season is lengthy, covering most of the months, with September and October being the wettest months, when precipitation averages over 240 millimetres (9.4 in). Thunderstorms can occasionally occur during the wet season.[12] Temperatures tend to remain stable with little variation from month to month though the temperatures are cooler from December to February with the coolest month averaging 22.9 °C (73.2 °F). Owing to its proximity to the sea, the island is fairly humid, with an average humidity of 83%.[12] The wettest recorded month was October 1980 with 792 millimetres (31.2 in) of precipitation and the wettest recorded day was June 19, 1975, with 281 millimetres (11.1 in).[12] Extremes range from 9.2 °C (48.6 °F) on January 18, 1977 to 39.2 °C (102.6 °F). At El Cielo, named after heaven itself, marvel at the starfish that decorate the sandy ocean floor. This sandbank in the southwestern tip of Cozumel is an incredibly beautiful spot with turquoise waters and shallow areas where the starfish are known to gather. The water depth at Cielo is very shallow, usually only waist deep, and is known as a sandbar. El Cielo is only accessible by boat and is about a half mile from the coast. The powder white sand will massage your feet every step you take.
For the next part of your Cozumel tour to Colombia Reef, a sublime snorkeling spot hailed as one of the Marine National Park's finest. Mild currents greet you in a protected bay like area where the shallow coral heads rise around 10-30 feet above the sandy ocean floor. Situated near Colombia Lagoon this area sometimes gets cool, fresh water coming from the lagoon. With excellent visibility and diverse variety of marine life, Colombia Reef is a perfect place to spot sea turtles, coral communities, barracudas, eagle rays and schools of shimmering fish.
Unknown Cozumel - the East Side - Private Jeep Tour by Cozumel Cruise Excursions
Unknown Cozumel - the East Side - Private Jeep Tour by Cozumel Cruise Excursions 2015
The West side of Cozumel is the Cozumel you know. Bars, restaurants, touristy beaches, trashy souvenir shops. The East side of Cozumel is different. This side of the island, facing the Caribbean Sea, is almost completely undeveloped. It is remote and scenic with few businesses, no touristy beaches - this area is not even powered with electricity.
THIS is what we wanted to see - the unknown side of Cozumel.
This trip report covers our private jeep tour of the East side of Cozumel, provided by Cozumel Cruise Excursions. On this jeep tour we visited a private beach for snorkeling, a visit to Punta Sur ecological park, a drive along the East coast of Cozumel and a tour of the Tequila Factory.
This video provides a brief review of our day. The complete review of Cozumel Cruise Excursions and our private jeep tour can be found at - the complete trip report for our Caribbean Cruise on Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas to Cozumel, Belize and Roatan, Honduras in May 2015.
