Hempstead Seeks Official State Day
Eighty-six years to the day that Charles Lindbergh took off from Roosevelt Field on his historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray joined Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin, Cradle of Aviation Executive Director Andrew Parton and Westbury resident Adam Sackowitz at the Lindbergh monument in East Garden City to support New York State Assemblyman Ed Ra's resolution to designate May 20th as Transatlantic Flight Day in the State of New York. Murray also detailed the town's efforts to landmark the monument, the site from which Lindbergh's plane took off before landing, 33 ½ hours later, in Paris.
Much of our nation's aviation history took flight on Long Island, including the first non-stop, solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927 by Charles Lindbergh, whose plane took off here in Hempstead Town, stated Murray. I am proud to partner with Assemblyman Ed Ra in designating May 20th as 'Transatlantic Flight Day in the State of New York' to mark Lindbergh's historic achievement. In concert with the Assemblyman's efforts, the town is pleased to be designating Lindbergh's 'take-off' site as a historic landmark.
Assemblyman Ra's resolution, set to be introduced in the state Assembly today, states that Lindbergh's flight was a landmark event in aviation and the history of our Nation ... which revolutionized the course of aviation.
Charles Lindbergh is an iconic figure in Long Island history and global aviation, said Assemblyman Ra. I am happy to sponsor legislation that will mark May 20th, the anniversary of 'Lindy's' landmark journey as 'Transatlantic Flight Day in the State of New York.'
I would like to commend Assemblyman Ed Ra for recognizing May 20th in honor of Charles Lindbergh, as the Town of Hempstead is taking steps to landmark this historic site, said Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby. With the combined efforts of New York State and Hempstead Town, what first took flight in 1927 will be remembered for generations to come.
Lindbergh's achievement was not only Long Island history, it was world history, said Councilman Hudes. Making May 20th 'Transatlantic Flight Day in New York,' is a fitting tribute to that legacy.
At a town Landmarks Preservation Commission public hearing last year, Murray and Councilwoman Goosby spoke in favor of landmarking the Lindbergh monument, located just outside a parking garage at The Mall at the Source in East Garden City. The Landmarks Commission offered its support, pending the designation of the plot of land around the monument to be included in the town's landmarking resolution. However, when Hurricane Sandy hit, official designation of the site was delayed, as the town focused its attention on post-storm clean-up and helping residents recover and rebuild.
Today, Murray announced that the Landmarks Commission is scheduled to make a formal decision on the Lindbergh monument at its next meeting, on June 11th. If the Commission supports it, a formal recommendation will be made to the Town Board, which would then vote on whether to landmark the site.
I look forward to the vote of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which has already voiced its support for landmarking the Lindbergh take-off site, said Murray. I am confident that my colleagues on the Hempstead Town Board will join me to vote in favor of preserving this piece of history in our township.
Concluded Murray, I would like to thank Assemblyman Ed Ra, Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Gary Hudes and Adam Sackowitz for their efforts in preserving aviation history in our township.

USA : POPE HOLDS OPEN AIR MASS IN BALTIMORE
English/Nat
The pope has led tens of thousands of Americans in an open-air mass in Baltimore on Sunday, the final day of his U-S visit.
During his five-day trip, Pope John Paul II spoke against the breakdown of traditional family life and the widening gap between rich and poor in America.
The poverty gap is a sensitive issue in a country where the religious right is talking of cutting back America's welfare spending.
The final leg of the pope's U-S tour was a one-day visit to Baltimore - dubbed the cradle of American Catholicism. The first Roman Catholic diocese in the United States was established in this state.
The plane touched down over twenty minutes late at Baltimore-Washington International Airport on Sunday morning.
But for two patient young members of the welcoming committee it was worth the wait.
Nine-year-olds Melissa Brent and Justin Farinelli had brought the pope black-eyed Susans, the state flower.
Then it was a short drive to Oriole Park at Camden Yards where the pope celebrated an open air mass.
An estimated 50-thousand people gathered at the stadium for the papal Mass. Many had been queuing since dawn - ample time for the entrepreneurial spirit to get to work.
Those selling mementos of the Pontiff's visit found a captive market at Camden Yards.
For America's Catholic community the Papal visit was long overdue.
SOUNDBITE: Vox pop
I think he is such a special person, he brings a specialness to the Church, I only am positive, I think he's absolutely wonderful. When he comes to our country everyone says Oh My God but there's something about that man, so that's just something good for us.
SUPER CAPTION: Woman attending event at Camden Yards
While the pope has a huge following worldwide, many Americans are sensitive to the dilemmas facing Roman Catholics in the 1990s.
SOUNDBITE: Vox pop
I think Americans are caught between trying to exert what they believe in their heart with something that's come down through history and it's a really difficult decision for many Catholics in the United States to make, as to whether they're going to follow the strict teachings of the Church or do as their consciences direct.
SUPER CAPTION: Man attending event at Camden Yards
The pope had a busy day ahead in Baltimore. After celebrating the open-air mass he was scheduled to parade through the city centre and visit a soup kitchen run by a Catholic Charities programme.

Judy Sund: The Essence of Earthiness: Van Gogh's Peasants
Judy Sund of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York presents: Judy Sund: The Essence of Earthiness: Van Gogh's Peasants's Peasants: The Essence of Earthiness Van Gogh's portraits of Patience Escalier, one of which will be on loan to the Frick this fall, were part of his long-term project to capture the essence of the peasant. Inspired by literary descriptions as well as by the art of the past, he was intent on giving definitive form to a well-established type. Abandoning strict accuracy in favor of evocative color and texture, van Gogh aimed to convey a sense of the agrarian laborer's life on the land and to capture something truer than the literal truth.
A native of southern California, Judy Sund earned her B.A. at San Diego State University and her Ph.D. in art history at Columbia University. She is a modernist who specializes in the art and architecture of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries in Europe and the United States. She is particularly well known for her work on van Gogh, having published two books on that artist (True to Temperament: Van Gogh and French Naturalist Literature, 1992, and Van Gogh: Art and Ideas, 2002), in addition to several essays. Professor Sund's secondary field of interest is the art and architecture of the Pre-Columbian Americas. Her current research interests include exoticisms in Western art, visual artists' responses to texts, and intersections of high art and popular culture (e.g. advertising, fashion, and popular entertainment).
Location: The Frick Collection, New York, NY

William McDonough: Design as Optimism | Talks at Google
As a part of Google’s Environment Day on April 25th, we invited architect, designer, thought leader, and author William McDonough to Google NYC for a talk on Design as Optimism. Moderated by Mary Davidge.
Design is the first signal of human intention. We are all designers because we all have intentions. What if our intention is to do good and make the world better because we are here? William McDonough shares real world examples of materials, products, buildings, communities, and economies that were designed in the search for good.
About William McDonough
William McDonough points the way toward “more good, rather than less bad” values and practices for businesses in all sectors at all scales—showing how a positive future of continuous improvement is possible now. He is an architect, a global leader in sustainable development, and serves on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the Future of Environment and Natural Resource Security.
For more than 40 years, McDonough—through McDonough Innovation, William McDonough + Partners, Architects, and MBDC—has defined the principles of the sustainability movement. He is co-author of Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things (2002) and The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance (2013). He also co-founded the not-for-profit Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute; and in 2012, he became the subject of Stanford University Libraries’ first “living archive.” McDonough has received the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development (1996), the first U.S. EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award (2003), and the National Design Award (2004). In January 2017, he was awarded the Fortune Award for Circular Economy Leadership at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting where he was hailed as “the father of the circular economy”. In 2009, he co-founded the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, to scale up the rigorous product certification program. Time magazine recognized him as a “Hero for the Planet,” noting: “His utopianism is grounded in a unified philosophy that—in demonstrable and practical ways—is changing the design of the world.”
