FULHAM FC: CRAVEN COTTAGE - THE HISTORY
CRAVEN COTTAGE - THE HOME OF FULHAM FC SINCE 1896. THE HISTORY.
Craven Cottage has a history that dates back to 1780 when a cottage was built in the woods and the surrounding fields were used for various sports. The site, however, later fell into disuse and the original cottage burned down in 1888.
Fulham had already played at various grounds when their eye fell on the site close to the river Thames. After cleaning up the overgrown field, they played their first match at the ground in 1896. Craven Cottage at that time consisted of nothing more than a basic wooden stand.
This changed in 1906 when a first proper stand was built. The stand, currently called Johnny Haynes Stand, was designed by Archibald Leitch and had a characteristic red-brick facade. The stand was accompanied by a pavilion, which is the present-day Cottage.
Craven Cottage was further expanded with terraces in the next decades and reached its record attendance in 1938 when a total of 49,335 spectators attended a game against Millwall. One decade later, Craven Cottage hosted a few games during the 1948 Olympic Games.
In the following years, the stadium got further improved, concluding with the construction of the Riverside Stand in 1972. Fulham played most of the 1980s and 1990s in the lower leagues and therefore few further changes were made to Craven Cottage.
When Fulham started climbing up the league in the late 1990s and achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2001, the stadium was therefore not able to meet Premier League requirements. The club consequently moved to Loftus Road for a year (after a first year of dispensation), and expected to return to a brand-new stadium.
However, due to opposition to the reconstruction plans and spiralling costs, the plans had to be abandoned and instead was chosen to refurbish Craven Cottage. Works were completed in the summer of 2004.
Craven Cottage remained one of the smallest grounds of the Premier League, and Fulham therefore kept considering either moving to a new stadium (possibly to be shared with another West-London club), or further redeveloping Craven Cottage.
The club in the end decided to stay at Craven Cottage and developed plans to build a new Riverside Stand, raising capacity to 30,000 seats. While they had their plans approved in 2013, works on the stand are yet to start.

I know there's no good answer to this, but why were (are) Fulham so good at home and so bad away? What did the players think?
Tell us about the amazing 2007/2008 season and your memories of it. It was amazingly dramatic with Everton and Birmingham at home, Reading and City away, then THAT game down in Portsmouth. The great escape with Roy Hodgson in charge.

The latest news on Fulham's Riverside Stand redevelopment and what happens next
The latest news on Fulham's Riverside Stand redevelopment and what happens next. Fulham were granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the Riverside Stand in March - but so far little else has happened with the development.
Hammersmith & Fulham council granted full planning permission for a new 8,650 capacity stand, which would see the overall capacity of Craven Cottage increase to 29,600.
This was the second time the club had been granted planning permission for the redevelopment, with the original plans being granted in 2013, but after the takeover of the club by Shahid Khan the plans were redrawn to new designs.
At the time, the time frame for work to begin was in the summer of 2019, but since then it's gone quiet on that front as Fulham have begun life back in the Premier League.
Here's everything we know so far, what is currently happening and what happens next for the stand.
What has happened so far?
Fulham have been granted planning permission to redevelop the Riverside Stand.
This will increase the capacity of the stand to 8,650 and will see the current stand demolished and replaced by a new two-tier stand.
This new stand will include new new shops, a riverside walkway and nine apartments.
Planning permission was granted back in March with the club hopeful they would begin work in the summer of 2019.
What is happening at the moment?
At the moment, the club is still out to tender to potential sub-contractors.
This means Fulham are still inviting bids for the project from sub-contractors that will carry out the work on the Riverside Stand.
Chief Executive, Alistair Mackintosh, confirmed in the September meeting with the Fulham Supporters' Trust that the club wouldn't sign a contract with potential sub-contractors unless they were totally satisfied with the offer on the table - something they haven't been so far.
However, the view is still to move the project on as soon as possible with the plan not in danger of slipping a year.
What happens next?
Once Fulham are satisfied and have chosen a sub-contract, a time frame of works will be issued and the project can start moving forward - with the view to start work still the summer of 2019.
The club are also looking to set up Riverside Working group with season ticket holders in the current Riverside Stand to discuss the various relocation options available for fans that will have to be relocated during the works.
Once all these various things are done - work will eventually start on the project.
Is Shahid Khan's wish to buy Wembley Stadium having an effect on this project?
In short, no.
Mr Khan's plans to buy Wembley Stadium will have no impact on Fulham, Craven Cottage or the Riverside Stand redevelopment - they're two separate projects.
