Redwood Highway Motorcycle Ride: Grants Pass to Crescent City
Ride with us along Highway 199 from Grants Pass, Oregon, to Crescent City, California. This highway is designated the Redwood Highway, and riding between these giant trees in Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park near the south end of this route can be a spiritual experience. Earlier along this route is the Smith River Canyon, 15 miles of tight twists and turns as Highway 199 follows the Smith River through a narrow rock gorge, a stretch that seems to be built for motorcyclists. Part 11 of our 31 day 2013 motorcycle tour.

The nearby Redwood forest to Crescent City California is most impressive. The Trees of Mystery tourist trap is not really worth it. The claim to fame is the Gondola ride up the hill. The trees here are not the giants in the surrounding forest.
The Shoreline RV Park is on the water and quite nice.
The town of Crescent City was not a favorite. It appeared to have many homeless folks holding up signs asking for money. Not a comfortable place in my opinion. However it is a scenic location.

A train ride through American history - New Orleans to New York | DW Documentary
From New Orleans to New York, a train ride aboard the Crescent takes you on an extraordinary journey through American history.
This train journey begins in the cradle of jazz - New Orleans. Three famous express trains start and terminate here: the City of New Orleans, the Sunset Limited and the Crescent, named after a New Orleans neighborhood. Every morning at 7 a.m. the Crescent sets off from New Orleans on its 1,377-mile journey from the Deep South to pulsating New York City.
The distance is covered in around 31 hours. The route takes in various famous cities on the journey northeast. Birmingham, Alabama is also known as Bombingham after the attacks launched there by the Ku Klux Klan during the civil rights movement era between 1947 and 1965. The train then heads to Atlanta, the largest city in Georgia. Charlotte in North Carolina was named nearly 250 years ago after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the German wife of Britain’s King George III. Our next stop is Washington D.C., capital of the United States since 1800. Beforehand that honor had gone to a city further north: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in 1776. The final stop on this unique train journey is New York City aka the Big Apple.

Diann and Tracy Horse Ride at Crescent Beach
Diann, Tracy and I left a hot Rogue Valley and took Taxi, Maia and Tori to Crescent Beach in Crescent City, California. It was Taxi's first time at the Pacific Ocean and he rocked it, such a brave and confident boy. Maia and Tori are old hands at the ocean, but sea birds, dead rays, driftwood and sculptures made of dead crabs caused them some pause. Still they cantered freely down the beach and stopped to our sigh and Tori gaited through the waves. Life is very good. Music by Mary Ann Kennedy is used with the permission of the artist.
