Old Glasgow - Crookston Castle
I took a little walk to a place called Crookston Castle in Glasgow. It was a really fun day of exploring this old ruined castle and getting a feel for the way of life in that day and age. Something I look forward to doing more of on my travels. Enjoy!

History
Crookston Castle is located in the Pollok area of south-west Glasgow, Scotland. The castle is located some 5 miles (8 km) south-west of the city centre, and 3 miles (5 km) east of Paisley, overlooking the Levern Water, just before its confluence with the White Cart Water
Crookston is surrounded by a defensive ring-ditch that dates back to the 12th century when Sir Robert de Croc, who also gave his name to the village of Crookston, built a timber and earth castle. Remains of a chapel founded by de Croc in 1180 have been uncovered.[1] Evidence of an even earlier fortification on the same site has also been found. The lands of Crookston were bought by Sir Alan Stewart in 1330, and passed to Sir John Stewart of Darnley, in 1361. The Darnley Stewarts replaced the early castle with the present stone structure around 1400.
In 1489 the Stewart Earl of Lennox rebelled against James IV. James responded by bringing the cannon Mons Meg from Edinburgh, and bombarding the castle, virtually destroying its western end, and ensuring a quick surrender.[2] In 1544 the castle was besieged and taken by the Earl of Arran and Cardinal Beaton, while the then Earl of Lennox was defending Glasgow Castle. At this time, Crookston was regarded as the principal house of the earls of Lennox.[3]
Most famous of the Darnley Stewarts was Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who was second husband to Mary, Queen of Scots. It may have been at Crookston that the couple were betrothed,[4] under a yew tree. The yew was felled in 1816,[5] and a model of Crookston Castle, now on display in Pollok House, was carved from its wood.[6] In 1572, Crookston was granted to another Stewart, Charles, the Earl of Lennox.[7]
In 1703 the Duke of Lennox sold the castle to the Duke of Montrose, and it remained the property of the Dukes of Montrose until 1757, when it was sold by William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose to the Maxwells of Pollok. Following several years of abandonment, the castle was partially restored by the Maxwells in 1847, to honour Queen Victoria's visit to Glasgow. In 1931, Crookston became the first property acquired by the National Trust for Scotland, having been presented by Sir John Maxwell Stirling-Maxwell, who was one of the Trust's founder members and first Vice Presidents.[6] Today, Crookston Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and a Category A listed building. Its maintenance is the responsibility of Historic Scotland.

Renowned Glasgow all girls high school set to be opened to boys
Glasgow's ruling SNP group has voted in favour of opening up Scotland's last remaining all-girls school to boys.
A decision on whether boys should be allowed into Notre Dame High School will be made by councillors from all political parties at a meeting on November 28.
But the council's minority administration has decided to support co-education, meaning other parties would have to unite in opposition for the school to remain single-sex.
Councillor Chris Cunningham, city convener for education, skills and early years, said: Although the final decision will be taken at the city administration committee by all political parties, the SNP Group and city cabinet have agreed after discussion and a vote to support the co-education option for the future of Notre Dame High School following the recent consultation.
Consultation on the school's future closed in May, with almost 5,000 responses, and a paper, including the statistics of responses and an Education Scotland report, will be made public three weeks before the council committee makes the final decision.
Options included no change, allowing the school to accept boy or retaining the single-sex status but adding more primary schools to the catchment area.
Results from the consultation process were shared with interested parties, with campaign groups Girls for Notre Dame and Notre Dame High 4 All both arguing the statistics support their position.
Figures show that around 53 per cent of votes were returned for the first two options – 39.9 per cent voted to keep the status quo while 13.4 per cent said they would want to keep the school single sex and expand the catchment area.
However, 45.9 per cent of respondents said they would like to make the school co-educational.
Currently, Notre Dame High School has two associated primary schools; Notre Dame Primary School and St Ninian’s Primary School. Some girls attending Corpus Christi Primary School are also entitled to transfer due to a shared catchment area.
The West End school has a capacity of 800, with around 720 pupils currently enrolled. The current school roll includes a significant number of placing requests from over 50 primary schools across the city.

Imagine a Cube of Rock… below Glasgow
The British Geological Survey drills the first UK Geoenergy Observatories borehole in Glasgow. Scientists, industry, business, politicians and dignitaries came together on Friday 7th December to visit the first drilling site and watch some of the core samples being extracted from the 199-metre-deep borehole.
The UK Geoenergy Observatories are being delivered by the BGS for the whole of the UK science community to conduct important research that will improve our knowledge of the underground environment and understand how it can help us transition to a low carbon economy. The Glasgow research site will look at the chemistry, physics and biology in and above the flooded mine workings below the east end of the city, looking at how heat of the mine water might be used as a renewable energy source for towns and cities built on coal across the globe.
The UK Geoenergy Observatory in Glasgow is part of a £31m investment by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) into big science kit that will enable the Earth science community to underpin sustainable development of new energy sources, technologies and innovation.

Cadzow Castle, now in ruins, was constructed between 1500 and 1550 on the site of an earlier royal castle, one mile south-east of the centre of Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The town of Hamilton was formerly known as Cadzow or Cadyou , until renamed in 1455 in honour of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton. The castle sits above a gorge overlooking the Avon Water in what is now Chatelherault Country Park, but was previously the hunting and pleasure grounds of the Duke of Hamilton's estate of Hamilton Palace. The ruin is a category B listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
