With diverse indigenous, African, and European roots, Havana’s culture and architecture reflect Cuba’s complex history of conquest, slavery, liberation, and revolution. Chosen for its strategic location on the island’s northwestern coast, in the early sixteenth century, Havana grew into the largest port in Spain’s Caribbean colonies.
The original layout of Habana Vieja—Old Havana—is still intact. Building ordinances in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries preserved the city’s architectural integrity. Wrought-iron gates, internal courtyards, and stone colonnades adorn the buildings of its five main plazas.
Among some 900 surrounding historic structures, a few highlights include the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, one of the oldest existing forts in the Americas, the eighteenth-century Catedral de La Habana on the plaza by the same name, and the Museo de la Ciudad, housed in a baroque palace on Havana's original town square.
Even with international recognition, the work of preserving the historic city center remains ongoing.
Visitors from around the world flock to Cuba for its pristine beaches, exciting nightlife, and a fascinating, blended cultural heritage of art, music, and design.
Traveling to Cuba is much easier for U.S. citizens than it used to be, but check the State Department website for any current advisory notices.

Havana Homegrown: Inside Cuba's Urban Agriculture Revolution
This video from the nonprofit group SeedMoney ( ) looks at the urban agriculture revolution in Havana, Cuba and its origins.
Cuba is not only an island nation in terms of its geography, but also its economy and politics as a result of the US embargo and the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba's largest source of trade and aid until the Berlin Wall fell in 1991. Cut off from the world's pipeline of food, oil, chemical pesticides and fertilizers, Cuba embarked upon an ambitious program to grow as much of its own organic food as possible in the 1990s during what was known as the special period. This short video produced by the nonprofit group Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI) peeks into Havana's urban farms and gardens to see what lessons they have to offer other cities working to move toward sustainable food security.

Cuban chants traced to Sierra Leone - BBC News
Subscribe to BBC News youtube.com/bbcnews
During more than three centuries of transatlantic trade, just short of a million slaves were shipped to Cuba. Today many of their descendants know little or nothing of their origins. But one community in western Cuba has managed to keep the songs of their forefathers alive through the generations. In a remarkable discovery the origins of the songs have been traced back to a village in Sierra Leone.

The Storytellers Reading to Cuba’s Cigar Factory Workers
Cuba is world-renowned for its cigars. But there’s a deeper story behind their creation. As per a tradition that started in 1865, storytellers, or “lectores,” stand at a platform reading to hundreds of cigar makers every day. Texts range from magazine articles and news stories to dramatic readings from works of classic literature. Today, the tradition carries on, entertaining, inspiring and unifying generation after generation of factory workers.

Callejon de Hamel, Santería Performance, Havana, Cuba 1
Aside from its funky street murals and psychedelic art shops, the main reason to come to Havana's high temple of Afro-Cuban culture in Centro Habana is the frenetic rumba music that kicks off every Sunday at around noon.
Santería, also known as Regla de Ocha, La Regla de Ifá, or Lucumí, is an Afro-American religion of Yoruba origin that developed in Cuba among West African descendants. Santería is a Spanish word that means the worship of saints. Santería is influenced by and syncretized with Roman Catholicism.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
CUBA: HAVANA: PILGRIMS FROM FLORIDA REDISCOVER THEIR ROOTS
Spanish/Nat
A group of pilgrims from Florida, in Cuba to see the Pope, have viewed for themselves the economic hardships that Cubans are going through.
They were all either Cubans or from Cuban origin.
Pilgrims from Tampa, Florida, --all of them Cubans or from Cuban origin, rediscovered their roots on Thursday when they visited the Museum of the city in Havana.
The former Palace of the Capitans-General was home to the Spanish governor until independence, and of the U-S military governor for the few years after.
But it is recent Cuban history which interests them most.
Some had not visited Cuba for more than three decades; others were born in the States and have never been here before.
All are amazed with the beauty of the city and the hospitality of the people, but many we spoke to at random are struck by economic hardship and blame the U-S embargo for it.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
I think the embargo is hurting the people and people are not the ones to blame. The people need help and I think that if we are Christians we have to forgive and help our brothers.
SUPER CAPTION: Nora Alonso, U-S pilgrim
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Although it puts on limitations as far as the assistance the government can get economically -which is the purpose of the embargo, it also puts many restrictions as to the access of the people here in Cuba to the world and therefore it maintains a mass isolated without knowing what the world is capable of offering Cuba.
SUPER CAPTION: Aristides Fernandez, U-S pilgrim
SOUNDBITE (Spanish)
Opinions are now changing, when people see the suffering here because of the embargo. This cannot be this way. This is coming to an end.
SUPER CAPTION: Joanna Diaz, U-S pilgrim
These pilgrims are confident that things are going to change for the better in Cuba, and that the Pope's visit can only accelerate the process.
