How do you begin to describe ICHI?
To see ICHI live is to witness something totally idiosyncratic and entirely new. It’s fun, it’s danceable, it’s exciting. Music made with loops, toys, steel drums and all manner of beats, utterly bonkers and completely captivating.

An Evening with an Immigrant hits Bristol
Tobacco Factory Theatres BEYOND is proud to present an amazing autobiographical piece by award-winning poet and playwright Inua Ellams at The Cube Microplex on Wed 12 & Thu 13 October 2016.
Born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother in what is now considered to be Boko Haram territory, in 1996 at the age of 12,
Inua Ellams left Nigeria for England. He then moved to Ireland
briefly before returning to London and starting work as a writer
and graphic designer.
Part of his fascinating story was documented in his hilarious, Edinburgh Fringe First Award-winning play The 14th Tale, but much of it is untold. Littered with poems, stories and anecdotes, over the course of an evening, Inua tells his ridiculous, fantastic, poignant immigrant-story of escaping extremist Islam, directing an arts festival at his college in Dublin, performing solo shows at the National Theatre, and drinking wine with the Queen of England, all the while without a country to belong to or place to call home.
Born in Nigeria, Inua Ellams is an award-winning poet, playwright and founder of the Midnight Run – an international, arts-filled, night-time urban walking experience. Identity, displacement and destiny are recurring themes in his work, in which he tries mixing the old with the new, the traditional with the contemporary

WHAT IS THE CUBE?
A dream turned into reality. The Cube Microplex and its all-volunteer staff have for nearly 15 years helped establish it as a progressive arts cinema and music venue with an international reputation.
In 1998 we were given a 15 year lease that is now coming to an end. Our plan is to buy the building and become masters of our own destiny. After lengthy negotiations with our landlord, a price of £185,000 has been agreed. We have until Dec 31st 2013 to raise the full amount.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BUY IT & OWN IT NOW
Not a single person who works at the Cube gets paid for this work. The Cube workforce is managed, manned, operated, programmed, cleaned and looked after entirely voluntarily.
This is the only way it can work. If we paid people in money for their work it would divide the workforce, create a false interest in work and ultimately make the whole project driven by salaries.
ONLY the public gains from the Cube Cinema buying the property.
ONLY the public gets a direct return.
This return will be in the form of a stronger, better, future proof and renewed Cube Cinema.
Better equipped to run more advanced programmes. Better fitted out to be warmer, more comfortable, more accessible.
Better looking and more prepared to cope with the elements. More ergonomically designed so ALL spaces are utylised for activities, education, even PRODUCTION.
These things will NEVER happen whilst we are paying rent to a private landlord!
Once we own it we'll KEEP ON RUNNING IT VOLUNTARILY for you. Thats so that you can come and enjoy all the amazing things it does and hopes to do and be happy in yourself knowing that you made this happen.
ONLY the public benefits from this radical move of a small arts organisation having complete control over its future
ONLY THE PUBLIC STANDS TO MAKE A KILLING BY OWNING. HOWS THAT? you ask.......
Well, think about it. When you donate money to buy the Cube you are really giving that money to yourself!
Thats because THE CUBE IS RUN BY YOU, IT IS RUN BY THE PUBLIC. YOU ARE US and WE ARE YOU.
HOW WE'RE GOING TO DO IT
We have established a separate organisation, Microplex Holdings Ltd, a non-profit Industrial and Provident Society and Community Land Trust (CLT) whose charter is to secure and maintain the freehold of the Cube Cinema as a community arts space in perpetuity.
Because the Cube is run by the public we are turning to the public to help realise the dream, both for our volunteers, users, cultural partners and the whole of Bristol. This will be a huge amount of graft but the Cube's history is strewn with challenges and it relishes this one

More about E B U:
'Celebrating otherness, Bristol based producer E B U casts a universe of her own both sonically and visually. Defying any one genre, she refers to her distinct sound as ‘Swamp Pop’. Unnatural sounds and pitches exhale in melodic chants, ominous baselines resound and eerie loops fixate in this macabre ensemble. You are captive in her world. Moments of haunting clarity keep you wondering where she will take you next whilst strange narratives unfold. Her chameleonic visual display is charged with emotion, keeping you suspended in a state of flux as she orbits through the spectrum. Stimulated by human behaviour and existence she questions the very nature of being and invites the audience to explore through her cathartic performance.'

Sam Amidon (Pretty) Saro, The Cube Bristol- 19th Oct 2011
Saro or Pretty Saro as rearranged and verses chosen by Sam Amidon. I've found there are quite a few versions of this folk song which reportedly came over to the US from Britain in the 18Th century and was kept alive and changed by the Appalachians. Its beautiful. I can't quite get the chords though.
