How to Get to Machu Picchu from Cusco: Sacred Valley, Peru
If you think you can fly into Cusco and then easily get to Machu Picchu from there, you’re wrong. You have to take a bus and then a train to a small village at the base of Machu Picchu. This video shows you the journey from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, through the Sacred Valley to the basecamp for all visits to Machu Picchu.
**What's going on?**
I'm on a business trip with some friends from school. We're visiting a lot of companies and learning about business in Peru and all of Latin America. Between business visits, we're exploring and eating all the food. :)

**How to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu**
For even more details, read our blog post:
No matter how you go, you will travel through the Sacred Valley. It is gorgeous, so I highly recommend traveling during daylight hours so you can appreciate the beauty.
Option 1: Train only. $75-$115 USD, 3.5-4.5 hours
There is a train straight from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu), but it’s usually more expensive than the bus/train combo and less flexible, and the main train station they depart from is Poroy, a 30-minute taxi/uber ride from Cusco. Try to book a train from San Pedro station, which is only 8-minutes from Cusco.
Book your train ticket in advance:
Option 2: Bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu). $5 USD bus + $65 USD Train
Walk 10 minutes south from Plaza de Armas in Cusco to Pavitos street. On Google Maps, look for the “Estacion de colectivos.” It’s a yellow building that says “Real Inka” on it. The colectivos are minibuses and they leave as soon as they’re filled, which can be anywhere from 20-40 minutes between buses. Buses leave from 2:30am to 7pm and they’ll bring you straight to the train station in Ollantaytambo.
We recommend booking your train in advance and then planning backwards for when to get on the minibus in Cusco. The bus is always the same price, but the train tickets vary wildly, from $65 USD to $195 USD. Trains depart Ollantaytambo for Machu Picchu from 5:30am to 10pm.
Real Inka buses:
PeruRail:
Option 3: Private bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu). $140 USD (for 14 pax) for the bus + $65 USD train
This is what we did because we had a large group and we needed to stop at a few places to make the trip educational (hence the textile “factory” and the salt mines. You can book a private tour through Real Inka or any number of other tour companies.
Here are some time stamps:
Bus Trip (Cusco to Ollantaytambo)
0:23 – Chinchero textile stop
1:46 - Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras)
3:08 - Ollantaytambo
Train (Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu)
4:01 – Train through Sacred Valley
Aguas Calientes
4:55 – Arrival and room tour
5:17 – Exploring Aguas Calientes
5:48 – Plaza de Armas, Virgen del Carmen church
6:38 – Market

Sacred Valley, Cusco Peru | Perurail - Most Scenic Train to Machu Picchu
Sacred valley is the city of Ollantaytambo and around, and is 2 hours from Cusco, Peru. It has some beautiful hikes to explore the incan history and is set in the Andes Valley along the Urubamba river. We spent a day exploring the ruins and the long lost incan cities here and roaming about the alleys of Ollantaytambo. Then we took the Perurail train to Aguas Calientes which is at the base of Machu Picchu. Have to say it is one of the most scenic rides I have ever done.

Perurail Sacred Valley train to Machu Picchu. July 2018
The incredible luxury Sacred Valley train from Urubamba to Machu Picchu. Surely one of the greatest and most breathtaking rail trips in the world. 3 course meal, wine, cocktails, lounge car and viewing car with open air viewing platform. Simply one of the best experiences of our lives.
Train Ride from Cusco to Machu Picchu, Peru
Visitors to Machu Picchu in Peru can get there one of two ways - by hiking for either four or seven days, or on a train that can be boarded at either Cusco or Ollantaytambo. I took Peru Rail's Vistadome, which provides large side windows and overhead skylights that give the best possible views of this incredible journey through the Sacred Valley and the cloud forest that is home to the ancient Inca ruins. The video shows the train and the services it provides, including the zig zag tracks that allow it to descend the steep grade into the river valley, where spectacled bears roam the banks and orchids carpet the trees. The price for the 3.5 hour, 57 mile trip was approximately $75 USD each way. To read more about my round-the-world travels, visit my blog,
The Sacred Valley of The Incas I Cusco Peru Travel Vlog
On this episode of the travel vlog, we're in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru.
We left Cusco, Peru early this morning for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Everyone knows of Machu Picchu, but what lots of people don't realize is that there are thousands of beautiful ruins in Peru. In The Sacred Valley, there are some of the most impressive ruins in all of South America.
We started our day, though, playing with a bunch of Alpacas and llamas at a farm just outside the valley. It was way too much fun.
Eventually, we started our Sacred Valley tour with a stop at the Pisac Ruins. Pisac is one of the most impressive sets of terraces anywhere in the world. The ruins are just unbelievable, and no matter how many times I come back here, it still amazes me.
Afterwards, we headed down into the village of Pisac for a quick wander through the market. I managed to try on a bunch of different hats to get by hat game to the next level.
After lunch, we continued the travel vlog with a drive down the Sacred Valley to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. Like Pisac, the Ollantaytambo ruins are some of the most impressive anywhere in the world, let alone in Peru. We climbed up to the top of the ruins and were left with some of the most impressive views anywhere in Peru. It is absolutely stunning here.
Then, finally, in the evening, we jumped on the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes to finish out our Sacred Valley tour. Town of Aguas Calientes is also known as Machu Picchu Town because it's right at the base of the famous ruins.
Tomorrow, the Peru travel vlog will continue the journey up the hill to Machu Picchu. I can't wait.
PERURAIL VISTADOME - What you NEED to know for your trip
Train to Machu Picchu - Peru Rail Vistadome - Cuzco / Sacred Valley
The route to Machu Picchu has many landscapes that transform the journey in a show worth admiring. That´s why the PeruRail Vistadome train, which has panoramic windows in every wagon, is the best option for those people who love to be in touch with nature from the moment they first arrive.
From Poroy Station, located near Cusco city, or Urubamba and Ollantaytambo Stations, both located in the Sacred Valley; begin an adventure full of magic to Machu Picchu on board the PeruRail Vistadome. Sit comfortably and feel the connection with nature. Beautiful landscapes will make the trip an unforgettable experience.
From a full dry pampas panorama, typical peruvian andes, to an intense green view of the jungle. Diverse sensations, a mixture of relaxation and wonder, will take you to a state of tranquility while the trip goes deep into the Inca territory.
While you enjoy a light snack prepared with unique local andean ingredients accompanied by traditional background music, the Vilcanota River, also called by the Incas “Wilkanayu” that means “Sacred driver’’, accompanies the train during much of the tour.
Finally, the adventure to Machu Picchu turns unforgettable when the magic takes in the PeruRail Vistadome train on the outbound journey. Dancers of Saqra, traditional dance of Puaucartambo, Cusco, get on the wagons to spread the typical euphoria of the Andean customs with their joy and dancing steps.
The journey continues with an elegant Fashion show that display on board an exclusive collection of Baby Alpaca, which have been worked in a collaborative way with the andean communities, to promulgate their art and textiles.

Machu Picchu Train Peru ????????
■ MACHU PICCHU, PERU: Having landed in Cusco two weeks ago and being in complete awe over the history and particularly the architectural ruins scattered around the city, I quickly realized I did not want a repeat of my visit to Sri Lanka's Sigiriya.
Long story short, I went there without knowing much of the background of the empire that created the now famous world heritage site and thus wasn't able to appreciate it to the extent that I could've.
I therefore decided to tour other parts of Peru first (Arequippa, Huacachina, Paracas) whilst I also got down to studying the Inca Empire and the Spanish colonial adventure that proved to be its undoing, before eventually returning to Cusco for a visit to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley.
I did so not only to be able to narrate properly for you guys as I go to film these sites but also because nothing's more annoying than knowing you didn't get the most out of your visit to what may prove to be the only time in your life you'll get to visit a site.
So without further ado, here's the train journey from Cusco to South America's most famous tourist attraction, Machu Picchu. The company I opted for is Perurail, one of two companies that operate this route through these incredible valleys. The other being Incarail.
So did the train journey live up to the expectations? And what was the food like? And what about my hotel in Machu Picchu?

Beyond Machu Picchu. The Sacred Valley of Peru: Cuzco, Urubama, Ollantaytambo, Pisac.
Visitors of Machu Picchu often overlook the cute and charming historic villages in Sacred Valley. This vlog is about my visits to these villages.
I decided to spend my first night in a small village named Ollantaytambo because it would help reduce the high altitude sickness (compared to Cuzco, which is at a much higher elevation) and it's much more affordable in terms of lodging than Cuzco (Cusco). There are plenty of decent accommodations in Ollantaytambo. Also, catching a train to Agua Caliente (a town at the base of Machu Picchu) would be less expensive from here. This is particularly true if you use colectivo to travel from Cuzco to Ollantaytambo.
** CORRECTIONS to typos in the video: 1- Collectivo should be Colectivo.
2- Capella Lodge should be Capilla Lodge
Colectivo is a shared taxi that costs a fraction of regular taxi fare, especially for long distance. This is how the locals travel. There's no set schedule for departure. The colectivo would depart when the number of passengers reaches to a go-point (usually means when the vehicle reaches its capacity). The station for Cusco-Ollantaytambo is located at the corner of Calle Pavitos and Av Grau.
More travel tips...
1. If you want to save some money and know what you're doing, catch a taxi parked outside of the airport's parking lot, instead of ones that park along the curb right outside of the arrival gate.
2. Almost all hotels offer free cocoa tea (in dried leaves form). Take advantage of it. It may help your body to cope with the high altitude sickness. But remember not to overdo it because the high dose of this stuff is considered as 'narcotic' in the US, and thus, is illegal. So, don't even bother packing kilos of them home unless you want to get to know the DEA up close and personal.
3. Most motorcarros in Peru do not have smog control. That means air pollution can be a problem if you are sensitive to exhaust fumes. Pack a breathing mask (like ones used for bike riding) if you're uncomfortable to exhaust fumes.
4. Ollantaytambo's power often goes down when it rains in the evening for a short duration (about 20 minutes or so). Carrying a flashlight (one on your smart phone would do) could save you some hassles. During the power failure, which happens frequently, ATM machines in town would also quit working.
5. I found independent travel to be the best way to see more of the Sacred Valley. Group tours don't work for me. You can hire a taxi from Cuzco's main square for about US$30 for the day. That includes the driver and the vehicle itself. You can go anywhere that's the drive agrees to take you in or outside of Cuzco. Note: Quoted price is for the date of own travel.
6. From Ollantaytambo you can catch a train to Agua Caliente. This is the train terminal for Machu Picchu. To get to Machu Picchu, you'll have to purchase a separate bus ticket. Staying overnight in Agua Caliente is recommended if you don't want to rush your visit to Machu Picchu. There's a French bakery named La Boulangerie de Paris, located near the Agua Caliente train station that serves great French pastries. They open quite early in the morning. It's owned by a French lady who lives up to the great tradition of French bakery!
Bon Voyage!

Taking the Inca Rail to Machu Picchu - Walkthrough vlog
Deciding which train to take from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu is a serious decision. There are different trains with different options, luxuries and features. This video is our trip on the most simplest of options organized by Machu Picchu excursions, the Inca Rail.
This video will show you
- what the station at Ollantaytambo looks like
- how to get the train at Ollantaytambo
- boarding the train
- service on the train
- arrival at aguas calientes
- how to exit the station at aguas calientes
We hope you find it helpful when planning your trip to Machu Picchu.
The Machu Picchu Railway, Peru 1997
In 1997 I had the opportunity to visit the famous Machu Picchu in Peru.
To get there I went via the city of Cuzco by air. From Cuzco there was a 3' narrow gauge railway to Mach Picchu. At the time of my visit on October 14th of 1997 the railway was still operating passenger trains from the central station in Cuzco. The climb out of Cuzco was spectacular with our train having to negotiate a steep climb into the surrounding hillside, by means of a series of switchback turns known locally as the zig zag.
Today tourist take a 20 min drive to pick up the train at Poroy and avoide the zig zag.
The train next stops at Poroy before descending into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The railway then follows the Urubamba river along the Gorge by the same name.
The final stop was Aguas Calientes (hot waters) which is only two km from Machu Picchu. The last two Km is done by mini bus to the summit.
I was very impressed with Peru, it's people, it's music (check out the sound track, I bought the music - a cassette- from a local band at a live performance) the hospitality, the accommodation and of course the Railway.
The railway was very busy and seemed to be the lifeline of the community. At the time of my visit, there was a new railway station under construction at Aguas Calientes. A very short clip of this is to be seen at the end. Today this station is in full use providing the arriving tourist with much improved comfort and convenience.
For the railway enthusiast and just about every one else, Machu Picchu is well worth a visit.

Scenic PeruRail Train Ride to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes)
We took a very scenic PeruRail train ride to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, which is the town closest to Machu Picchu. During the ride, we traveled over the rivers and through the foothills of the beautiful Andes mountains. On the way back, we saw a fashion show in our train car, along with a performance by a person dressed in a very strange costume.
