FLORIDA WILDLIFE CORRIDOR EXPEDITION EVERGLADES TO OKEFENOKEE
On January 17, 2012, the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition team kicked off a 1000-mile expedition over a 100-day period to increase public awareness of the need to protect and restore Florida's wildlife habitat. Bear biologist Joe Guthrie, conservationist Mallory Lykes Dimmitt, photojournalist Carlton Ward Jr., and filmmaker Elam Stoltzfus trekked from the Everglades National Park toward Okefenokee National Forest in southern Georgia. The team traversed the wildlife habitats, watersheds and participating working farms and ranches, which comprise the Florida Wildlife Corridor opportunity area.
Exploring a Cypress Swamp at Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area
Along The Florida Trail at Tosohatchee Wildlife Management I found this trail called the Swamp Spur Trail. It takes you deep into a cypress swamp and it's near Jim's Creek. It is amazing to walk through here and take in the scenery.

One of the viewing boardwalks in the Everglades, accessed from the Tamiami Trail, US41, through forest and swamp, see gators and snakes. Certain times of the year you would need mosquito repellent, we went in February and it was fine.
Withlacoochee State Forest and Richloam WMA Trails Florida Jeep Rides
Ride with us through Withlacoochee State Forest and Richloam WMA while visiting the North East side of the forest on trails in our 1995 Wrangler YJ Jeep. It was a hot day in Florida when we set out to ride some trails. I have always wanted to get out to Richloam and see the area for myself. It was great and huge! I only wish we could have had others with us so we could explore with a bit more adventure. Richloam WMA is one of seven large tracts of land that make up the Withlacoochee State Forest. The Richloam Tract, consisting of more than 58,000 acres, is located in Hernando, Pasco, Sumter, and Lake counties. Pine flatwoods with scattered oak hammocks, bottomland hardwoods, and cypress swamp are the main natural communities on this area. 1995Wrangler.com Please subscribe.

SWAMP THING Everglades Hike (Mile Marker 34 - Florida Trail)
Raw footage from our annual Swamp Thing hike on the Florida National Scenic Trail. Since this portion of trail is underwater and not visible, hikers must rely on the orange blazes painted on trees in order to navigate the swamp segments of FNST. The underwater terrain can be slow going and challenging to traverse because it is full of roots, cypress knees, & slippery mud slopes. First time swamp hikers often use the cypress trees to prevent falls. Average hiking speed is slow, usually around 1 MPH - 1.5 MPH.

EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK, FL
If you ever get to be in S FL, just west of US 1 & Palm Dr intersection is the road 9336 that takes you to Everglades National Park, feel free to drive all the way to Flamingo where the 40-mile park road ends, best time is during the day and especially during a sunny day, AVOID driving (and walking) in the park after sunset, not that is illegal BUT... you're all on your own, for financial reasons almost NONE park rangers patrolling the area and to protect you from the... unexpected, park is full of WILD non-human residents and lots of them eat a lot of... MEAT (don't tell PETA cause they will come over and start suing them LOL), yours included if offered free of charge, so... LOL
Most of the video is about driving in the park but last part, I guess the most juicy one, is where you see up close and personal the REAL park residents. Also a beautiful SUNSET in the wilderness.
NEVER BRING FOOD WITH YOU WHEN YOU GET VERY CLOSE TO THE UGLY ONES, UNLESS... LOL
Music recorded live on SiriusXM sat radio.
Enjoy your FL vacation.

Ocean To Lake Trail 2019
The annual Ocean To Lake Trail section hike hosted by the Florida Trail Association - Loxahatchee chapter. Six days of hiking through some premier South Florida wilderness areas. The trail runs for approximately 63 miles, west from Hobe Sound Beach to Lake Okeechobee where it ends at the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) trailhead, which is approximately two and a half miles south of Port Mayaca. The trail starts at the ocean, entering Jonathan Dickinson State Park at US 1, traveling through the park, Palm Beach County Natural Areas, Corbett Wildlife Management Area and Dupuis Management Area, and ends at the lake. The ecosystems on this beautiful trail change approximately every mile, from ancient sand dunes with scrub oak and sand pine to pine flat woods, palmetto and oak hammocks, cypress swamp and wet prairies. The temperature during this years hike topped 85 degrees with very high humidity. about 15-20 miles of this years hike was under water; average depth was ankle to knee deep!

Florida Panther Encounter - 7/5/2014
There are only about 160 Florida Panthers in the wild, and we were fortunate to see this young one - on public lands from the front seat of our car. (This is the long, minimally edited version of our adventure.) Please support funding for environmental protection!
Panthers eat well but still die badly in SW Florida, December 2010
This was filmed near Divide, Colorado on August 8, 2010) This clip is from:

12.20.2010 - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has confirmed at least six panther depredations since the beginning of December in the Golden Gate Estates area of Collier County. In the past week alone, panthers have killed several goats and a pig.
Other depredation reports have come from the Immokalee area. Some of the most recent depredations occurred on properties less than three-quarters of a mile from each other, off Golden Gate Boulevard, according to the FWC. Over the past weekend, four goats were killed east of Everglades Boulevard. At the time of all the depredations, the domestic animals were not secured in predator-proof enclosures. (More)

1:50 P.M. — The carcass of a radio-collared male Florida panther, designated FP173, were collected at 1 p.m. today on Lee County Port Authority mitigation land north of Corkscrew Road.
At this time, the cause of death is unknown.
Approximately 5 years old, the panther had two testicles, no cowlick and did not have a kinked tail, indicating the animal did not suffer from genetic defects as a result of inbreeding.
This is the 22nd panther mortality for 2010. At least 16 of those deaths were caused by a vehicle.
---
12/22/2010 - (Excerpt)
The panther showed no outward signs of being hit by a vehicle, attacked by another panther or foul play; the cause of death is unknown, said Florida panther project scientist Dave Onorato.
The carcass is being taken to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission wildlife research lab in Gainesville for a necropsy to determine a cause of death.
The latest panther death brings the number of panther deaths so far this year to 22, two short of last year's 24 deaths.
Of those, 16 panthers were killed in collisions with vehicles, one panther short of the record set in 2009.
On Sunday, wildlife biologists recovered a dead 9-month-old male panther along County Road 846 in Hendry County east of Immokalee. It had been hit by a vehicle.

12/17/2010 - (Excerpt)
Early next year the state will seek designs for a Roadside Animal Detection System -- RADS. As envisioned, this system will employ some sort of motion detector that, when triggered by a panther, will turn on a flashing sign or something similar to warn oncoming traffic. Such systems have been used in Arizona, Wyoming, Washington state, Wisconsin, and Minnesota to warn drivers of approaching elk and deer. Some of these systems trigger a warning sign when animals cross an infrared or laser beam, others are triggered by detecting body heat.
In some cases, collisions have dropped 97 percent, according to Marcel Huijser, a research ecologist at Montana State University who develops the systems. While panthers present more of a ground-hugging target, Mr. Huijser doesn't think that will be a problem.

GOLDEN GATE ESTATES — Environmentalists are wild about a new privately funded road crossing that's expected to save the lives of Florida panthers and other wildlife.
The developer will spend more than $1.3 million to build the crossing in a rural area where many endangered Florida panthers have lost their lives trying to get get across the road. Construction is under way.
