They have the legs for hunting in the tall grass and shrubs, and long bills and necks for catching their prey. Great egrets, white Ibis, blue Herons, night herons, and wood storks, are commonly seen wading birds in the Cypress, wetlands.
Many wading birds are colonial and nest in large groups. The island is within the land provide nesting places with isolation from predators and high quality foraging habitat. The island and the deep primitive channels were created in 2002 to restore the formerly productive wading birds rookery.
Wading birds are a sign of a healthy ecosystem, as they require abundant fish and other living prey. They eat fish, crustaceans, amphibians, insects, reptiles, and even small mammals. As a predator, the ecological role is to keep the population of prey like insects and fish, in balance.

Bird Sanctuary and Nature Preserve
Port Royal lies in the heart of a biologically rich estuarine ecology. Visitors come from all over to experience and explore what native South Carolinians have come to know as the Lowcountry.
What makes the Lowcountry special? A lot, but from an environmental perspective it's the ability to explore many different land types including salt marsh, forestland, brushland, fallow field and freshwater ponds. In combination, these habitats support a diversity of bird and plant life. Bird wildlife commonly observed include waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, raptors, and neo-tropical migrants, with large concentrations of white ibis, herons, and egrets.
Port Royal's Old Village is home to three diverse habitats: a large open lake, a very rare Bald Cypress swamp with existing boardwalk,
Offering learning and teaching opportunities about the importance of nature and the diversity of these special habitats. I do this for the health of it. Join me if you dare.

Beach at Port Royal
Port Royal Beach
Port Royal SC, Small Town with a Beautiful Beach.
Port Royal is located just south of Beaufort,SC and just north of Parris Island Marine Base. The village of Port Royal is a quite community off of route 802. It has a main street that leads down to a beach and boat launch area located on Beaufort River. It has a unique boardwalk that leads to a tower that stands four stories high. You can climb the tower and look out to a beautiful view of Beaufort River. Riding up and down the streets of Port Royal would make an excellent C ride, because of the light traffic in this residential area. I do this for the health of it. Join me if you dare.
