Tranquebar
Tharangambadi (formerly Tranquebar) is a panchayat town in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, 15 km north of Karaikal, near the mouth of a distributary of the Kaveri River. Tharangambadi is the headquarters of Tharangambadi taluk. Its name means place of the singing waves. It was a Danish colony from 1620 to 1845, and in Danish it is still known as Trankebar.
A Trip to Tranquebar | Tharangambadi | Fort Dansborg and other landmarks | Travel with Soudip
Tharangambadi formally tranqueber is in today's Nagapattinam district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.you can only imagine the beauty of the place from its poetic name
Tharangambadi means land of the singing waves. Perhaps it was the sound of this singing waves which made the Danish build a massive Fort here so big was this Fort call Dansborg that it was only the second to the largest danish fort ever built in the history of Denmark
however the Danish East India company was not a financial success as a Danish Government and merchant had hoped it would be. of the 18 ships that Departed from Denmark between 1622 and 1637 only 7 returned. also the geographical location of the trunk river make it vulnerable to high tidal waves which keep destroying the buildings in the colony.
Tranquebar is 7 Km away from the port city of karaikal. You can reach Tranquebar through Nagapattinam and Pondicherry also.
Itenerary:
Take a train from Chennai/ Bangalore/ Trichy to Karaikal
Go to the Karaikal bus stand where you can get several Public or private buses.
Get down at Tharangambadi stop and you need to walk half a kilometer to Fort Dansborg.
While walking down the street, check for the map that i have given in my video to visit important landmarks like New Jerusalem Church, Zion Church, First printing press in tamilnadu,, Governor house Sivan temple and so on.
Don't forget to give a visit to Bunglow on the beach. You will get many food varieties and liquor too.

Tranquebar - A Slice of Danish History in India
Fort Dansborg or Danish Fort at Tranquebar
A short video clipping showing the drive from Chidambaram/Sirkazhi side towards the Danish Fort at Tharagambadi (Tranquebar). Tharagambadi is still a very small village, giving out no clue on its place in the Indo-Danish history .
The video clipping was made using a dash camera on a car, with the lady from Google Maps giving the voice over and directions.
The Danish Fort has a museum inside the fort, which has details on the history of the Danish settlement, the trading post and the fort. Next to the Danish fort are the bungalows of the officials (which are now a museum and a luxury hotel).

Tranquebar was the first Danish trading post in India established in 1620. King Christian IVhad sent his envoy Ove Gjedde who established contact with Raghunatha Nayakof Tanjore. The Danish government sold the colony of Tranquebar to the British East India Company in 1845. Until then, an annual tributehad been paid by the Danes to the Rajah of Tanjore. Tharangambadi is the headquarters of Tharangambadi taluk, while its name means place of the singing waves. The name Trankebar remains current in modern Danish.

Fort Dansborg is a reminder of an almost forgotten chapter of history, when Denmark rules this tiny town. The fort is quite well maintained and well worth an hour. Most of the rooms are locked up, but there is a small museum upstairs with some random curiosities and some historical explanations. The ramparts give a nice view over the sea. 80 Rupees entry for foreigners, and a bargain at the price; closed on Fridays.

Rich history of Tharangambadi and the remnants of Danish influence-1
Tharangambadi widely known as Tranquebar was called Alapur in a work of Tamil literature called Thevaram, written by Appar and Sundarar. This place is famous for tourist attractions such as the Danish Fort, Danish Museum, and the village itself. A Lutheran missionary, Bartholomeus Zeigenbalg, who was also a Tamil scholar, is buried in New Jerusalem Church. He was the person who set up country’s first printing press in 1712, and published the first Tamil translation of the New Testament in 1715, which was then translated into Hindustani. More than 300 Tamil books were published during this period.
