Nairobi War Cemetery - Ngong Road
A short aerial film shot at the Nairobi War Cemmetry at Ngong Road.
HISTORY:
During the Second World War, Nairobi was the headquarters of the East African Force and the base for the conquest of Jubaland and Italian Somaliland, the liberation of British Somaliland and the sweep north-westwards to open Addis Ababa for the return of the Emperor.
The war cemetery was opened in 1941 by the military authorities. Besides the original burials, numerous graves were transferred to this cemetery from African civil cemeteries and temporary army burial grounds at Garissa, Gelib, Kinangop, Marsabit, Mega and other inaccessible places, so that it is now the largest war cemetery in East Africa. It also contains over 2,000 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
Within the cemetery is the EAST AFRICAL MEMORIAL, which commemorates men of the land forces who lost their lives in the advance from the south into Italian Somaliland and Ethiopia and during the occupation of those territories, and who have no known grave. Along with them are honoured those who died during the operations in Madagascar in 1942 and who have no known grave. Besides those who died in these campaigns, many men who were lost in the sinking of the troopship ‘Khedive Ismail’ en route to Ceylon on 12 February 1944 are commemorated here; they include a great part of the 301st Field Regiment, East African Artillery. “…Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC)

Tanzania Bagamoyo - Old German Military Cemetery 1889
Right next to the sandy beach, the old German graveyard consists of 20 German graves: 18 soldiers buried between 1889 and 1894, one nurse (1889) and one baby (1900), the daughter of the representative of the German East Africa Company. Off to the side there is also the grave of the British District Commissioner (1939). The video contains at the end a list of all German graves.
TRAVEL TANZANIA // We found a Paradise Treasure Island in Tanzania - Kilwa Island
We found a paradise treasure island in Tanzania (Kilwa Island)
Coming from Dar Es Salaam by car we arrived in KILWA without any problem to spent one day at Kilwa
We sleep by the sea, and wake up with the sound of the waves.
Kilwa is a great place to visit in Tanzania, the Island is full of energy.
The Kilwa Sultanate was a Medieval sultanate, centered at Kilwa (an island off modern-day Tanzania), whose authority, at its height, stretched over the entire length of the Swahili Coast. It was founded in the 10th century by Ali ibn al-Hassan Shirazi, a Persian prince of Shiraz.
Portuguese scout Pêro da Covilhã, disguised as an Arab merchant, had travelled the length of the Kilwa Sultanate in 1489-90, and visited the ports of Malindi, Kilwa and Sofala, and delivered his scouting report back to Lisbon, describing the condition of the Kilwa Sultanate in quite some detail. The first Portuguese ships, under Vasco da Gama, on their way to India, reached the sultanate in 1497. Gama made contact with the Kilwa vassals of Mozambique, Mombassa and Malindi, seeking to secure their cooperation as staging posts for the Portuguese India Armadas.
In 1500, the 2nd Portuguese India Armada, under Pedro Álvares Cabral, visited Kilwa itself, and attempted to negotiate a commercial and alliance treaty with Emir Ibrahim. But emir prevaricated and no agreement was reached.

April 5th marks China's tomb sweeping day or Qing Ming. It is an important day for people to offer sacrifice to their ancestors. In the Tanzanian capital of Dar es Salaam, members of the public, government delegates, representatives from the local Chinese community and staff at the Chinese embassy, visited a local cemetery, to honor the Chinese experts, who lost their lives, during the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway line

War Eagle from Tanzania
Nine undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Education under the leadership of Dr. Lisa Kasmer journeyed to Arusha, Tanzania in May 2010. This Study Abroad program provided these pre-service teachers an opportunity to become aware of how teaching is practiced differently in different cultural contexts and learn about Tanzania customs, values and traditions. During the week, students taught in local schools (including a lesson on how to offer a proper War Eagle!) and had daily Kiswhaili lessons. The weekends were spent camping in Maasai villages, hiking on Mt. Meru, and taking a four-day safari in the Ngorogoro Crater and the Sergenti.
