2019 Train of Lights extended
In 2018 we proudly presented the world's first steam Train of Lights - and it was a huge success!! A total sell out with extra dates and services added to meet the demand. Plans for our 2019 Train of Lights are well underway and we promise you will see an even bigger and better light show!!
Your truly spectacular illuminated journey starts at Queen's Park Station, Paignton, where our train with vintage carriages await you - decorated with thousands of lights, both inside and out. Fifteen minutes later, once you've had time to settle back into your seat, you will arrive at Churston Station where the show begins. As the anticipation builds and minutes after leaving Churston, you will be propelled through the 450-metre Greenway tunnel that leads you to the enchanted forest which will be transformed by a multitude of lights and feature displays. The breath-taking show ends as you leave the forest only to be greeted by the twinkling lights of Dartmouth reflected on the river Dart. After a turnaround at Kingswear and with the opportunity to disembark and take photographs from the platform, you will be on your way back to Paignton to experience the spectacle from a different direction.
This is a fully ticketed event with allocated seating so pre-booking is essential.

Dartmouth Steam Railway - Kingswear to Paignton
7th July 2017. Hercules up front !!
The Dartmouth Steam Railway, formerly known as the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, is a 6.7-mile (10.8 km) heritage railway on the former Great Western Railway branch line between Paignton and Kingswear in Devon, England. Much of the railway's business is summer tourists from the resorts of Torbay who are transported to Kingswear from where the Dartmouth Passenger Ferry takes them across the River Dart to Dartmouth.
The line is owned and operated by Dart Valley Railway plc. This also owns Dart Pleasure Craft Limited which operates the Dartmouth Passenger Ferry as well as river and coastal cruises.[1][2] The railway and connecting boat and bus services are jointly promoted as the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company.
It is unusual amongst heritage railways in that it is a commercial operation so does not rely on volunteer labour or charitable donations, although a few volunteers help at Churston railway station.
HERCULES... GWR 4200 Class 2-8-0T
Built in 1920 at Swindon Works, Works No. 2857. She spent most of her working life in South Wales on freight trains and was withdrawn in 1964 from Aberbeeg Shed (BR shed code 86H). It was moved to Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Glamorgan shortly after withdrawal and remained there for 20 years until 1986 when it was privately purchased. In 2008 it was sold to the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway following the completion of an overhaul. (Boiler ticket expires in 2018)
BRITISH STEAM - THE PAIGNTON AND DARTMOUTH RAILWAY
The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is the classic holiday line, with steam trains running for seven miles along the spectacular Torbay coast; a typical West Country Branch Line which revives all the atmosphere of the Great Western Railway. From Brunel's terminus at Kingswear 'Lydham Manor' climbs from the banks of the River Dart through deeply wooded hillside to Churston, followed by a descent of the Torbay coast. There are magnificent views over the Dart Estuary and superb seascapes right across Lyme Bay to Portland Bill. There is also time to visit the olde world town of Dartmouth and other attractions along the line.

Dartmouth Steam Railway Departing Kingswear
The locomotive Braveheart departs from Kingswear heading for Paignton on the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
The following information on Braveheart comes from the Dartmouth Steam Railway website: dartmouthrailriver.co.uk
Built December 1951 in Swindon. Withdrawn British Railways 1966
The British Railway 4-6-0 standard class 4 was built for use on the Western, Midland and Southern regions of the recently nationalised rail network. They were extremely versatile mixed traffic locos, frequently used on passenger duties.
75014 was allocated to a number of Midland region sheds during its short life and 1964 saw it allocated to Shrewsbury from where it was withdrawn and sent to Barry scrap yard in December 1966. In Barry scrap yard for fourteen years, it rotted and donated parts to other locos, until it was bought as a wreck in 1981. A four man syndicate based on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway brought it back to steam in 1994. The syndicate decided to sell the loco in 2002 and the Dartmouth Steam Railway & River Boat Company were fortunate to become the new owners.
For four consecutive years, 1995-98, it was the mainstay of the Jacobite tourist train from Fort William. After a missing a year it returned in 2000 when it was named Braveheart, in recognition of the Mel Gibson film, which was shot in the West Highlands.
Although only arriving in 2002, the locomotive`s boiler certificate expired in 2004 and the loco has since received a major overhaul, especially to the boiler, requiring many new parts, including a complete new boiler barrel. The overhaul took many years eventually seeing a return to service in December 2016. Braveheart is now a mainstay to the services on the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
