Israel 70th Independence Day Celebrations in Jerusalem, Davidka Square

Following a night of fireworks, concerts and parties Israelis were lighting BBQs, waving flags and watching Israel’s fighter jets flyover celebrating the country’s 70th Independence Day and the emotional crossover from Memorial Day to Independence Day.

This is one of the many videos I took from around midnight on my mobile phone on Davidka Square, Jerusalem across the street from where we live.

Wednesday 18 April 2018, Yom HaZikaron was ‘Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers of Israel and Victims of Terrorism’ which is Israel's official Remembrance Day which, to be precise, started Tuesday at sunset and ended Wednesday at sunset.

Immediately followed by Yom HaAtzmaut / Independence Day in Israel, again starting at sunset on Wednesday.
Why 19 April 2018 and not 14 May 2018 seeing that Israel declared independence on 14 May 1948?
Because of the Gregorian/Civil calendar vs the Hebrew/Jewish calendar where each month and year starts with the new moon (Rosh Chodesh).
Friday 14 May 1948 = the 5th day of the month Iyyar in the year 5708.
The 5th day of Iyyar falls on 19 April 2018 this year - actually starting from sunset on Wednesday 18 April to sunset on Thursday 19 April 2018.

Davidka Square (Hebrew: כיכר הדוידקה‬, Kikar HaDavidka) is a public square at the intersection of Jaffa Road, Street of the Prophets, and Kiach Street in Jerusalem, Israel. Its official name is Kikar Haherut (כיכר החירות‬, Freedom Square).[1][2] It features a small memorial to the Davidka, a homemade Israeli mortar used in the defense of Jerusalem and other cities during the 1948 War of Independence.
